2 Course Description Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants are finding themselves at the forefront of caring for the vastly growing hospitalized patient population. The 7th Annual Hospital Medicine for Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistants (NPPA) course is designed to provide NPPA hospitalists with up to date, evidence-based information and resources on the care of complex hospitalized patients. This course is specifically geared toward nurse practitioners and physician assistants as well as pharmacists, advanced practice nurses, registered nurses, and other health care providers who care for hospitalized patients. Sessions will focus on contemporary hospital practice, including guidelinebased, best practices, clinical care pathways, diagnostic and treatment algorithms, and common clinical dilemmas. Lectures will be structured in an interactive format with case based presentations to maximize learning for those attending. Course Learning Objectives Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: Analyze the future of hospital medicine and examine the vital roles NPPAs will play in providing care to hospitalized patients. Recognize common mistakes made when caring for geriatric hospitalized patients. Identify current evidence based practice recommendations in specialities such as cardiology, infectious disease, nephrology, gastroenterology, and hospital medicine. Describe optimal management of acute decompensated heart failure. Initiate appropriate and timely consultation with specialty services. Attendance at this Mayo course does not indicate nor guarantee competence or proficiency in the performance of any procedures which may be discussed or taught in this course. Pre-Course Skills Workshop This pre-course workshop will be an intensive one day workshop with focus in commonly encountered bedside procedures for the hospitalized patient that integrates both didactic and simulation based learning into an experiential learning curriculum that emphasizes knowledge and practice behavior. It arms the participant with the knowledge and skills to complete commonly occurring bedside procedures. (Additional fee) Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: Identify basic and advanced suturing techniques. Articulate standardized procedure for ultrasound guided thoracentesis. Recognize anatomic landmarks and approach when completing lumbar puncture. Intended Audience This course is intended for NPs, PAs, MDs, Advance Care Nurses, RNs, and Pharmacists. Credit Mayo Clinic College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Mayo Clinic College of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. (A maximum of 6.25 credits are available through a skills workshop.) Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. ACPE College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Mayo School of Continuous Professional Development is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Nursing This conference is offered in cooperation with Mayo Continuing Nursing Education. Mayo Continuing Nursing Education is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Participants can earn up to nursing contact hours (accredited). (A maximum of 6.25 ANCC credits are available through a skills workshop.) Other Health Care Professionals A certificate of attendance will be provided to other health care professionals for requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies, or other professional associations.
