2 Course Directors Deborah Echtenkamp, MSN RN CPON Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist Medical City Children s Hospital Dallas, TX Purpose As pediatric hematology/oncology nurses, we work with many patients who, despite the ever-improving cure rates, will lose their battles with their life-threatening conditions. The Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) is presenting a 2-day course discussing end-of-life care issues for children and their families. Who Should Attend Undergraduate and graduate pediatric nursing faculty Continuing education providers and staff development educators working in pediatric settings Hospice nurses Home-care nurses Advanced practice registered nurses/staff nurses working in pediatric acute-care settings (e.g., oncology, medical/surgical, palliative care, neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit, clinics, etc.) Other members of the pediatric interdisciplinary team, with the understanding that the curriculum is written by nurses for nurses Although geared toward nursing, the course can benefit healthcare providers from all disciplines who work with children and adolescents with cancer and blood disorders and their families. RNs who complete this course will be provided a certificate designating them as ELNEC- PPC Trainers. Non-RNs will receive a certificate designating them as ELNEC-PPC Trained. The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) Project is a national end-of-life educational program administered by City of Hope National Medical Center (COH) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and is designed to enhance palliative care in nursing. The ELNEC Project was originally funded by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with additional funding support from the National Cancer Institute, Aetna Foundation, Archstone Foundation, California HealthCare Foundation, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Identify the need for collaboration with interdisciplinary team members. Identify the development issues involved in pediatric palliative care. Describe the role of the nurse in providing quality palliative care for children and families. Identify changes in society, healthcare economics, and service delivery that necessitate improved professional preparation for palliative care. Discuss unique aspects of suffering for children and families facing a life-threatening illness or event. Continuing Education Credit Attendees can earn 13 continuing education credits by attending the 2-day course and completing and submitting a course evaluation. Contact hour certificates will be available to print online at the conclusion of the course. Make sure you are aware of the continuing education requirements of your state board of nursing, especially for those states in which continuing education is mandatory.
