2 COURSE DESCRIPTION The Challenges in Worker s Compensation Treatment Course will provide physicians that see injured workers and other healthcare professionals with an approach to the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions commonly encountered within the workplace. The course will focus on injuries that are often difficult to diagnose, are refractory to standard treatment, or warrant early referral to a specialist in order to optimize outcomes. Case based scenarios will be utilized to guide participants through formulating differential diagnoses, ordering appropriate diagnostic studies, developing an effective treatment plan and deciding when to refer to a higher level of care. Participants will benefit from the insightful perspective of multiple orthopedic, musculoskeletal and pain specialists, with an opportunity to ask questions. COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: Raise awareness of the potential for more complex injuries Identify patients that may benefit from timely specialty referral Consider early referral if a peripheral nerve injury is suspected Discuss other treatment options for injuries that fail to respond to standard treatment modalities Attendance at this Mayo course does not indicate nor guarantee competence or proficiency in the performance of any procedures which may be discussed or taught in this course.
