POSITION DESCRIPTION Outreach Coordinator (Science) Context Lincoln University is committed to teaching and research excellence and prides itself on creating an innovative and progressive environment that is student focused. With 3 Academic Faculties, 2 Research Centres, 2 Divisions and 16 Corporate Service Units, the University draws its students from throughout New Zealand and from over 60 countries. SchoolsLinc is a new department within the LincolnConnect group at Lincoln University. SchoolsLinc is staffed by secondary school teachers who use their teaching and learning experience to design learning materials and opportunities for schools to connect with Lincoln University and access its teaching and research excellence. SchoolsLinc is designed to support the Global Challenges Programme which works with schools (and the community) to increase understanding of and interest in global land-based challenges with relevance to Lincoln University s programmes. LincolnConnect plays an integral role in attracting and retaining students, and delivering a range of services, including: Marketing and Branding (publications, events, advertising) Domestic Liaison (students, teachers, parents and other stakeholders) International (students, agents, international partners) Communication Alumni and Development Business Development Conferences and Professional Development SchoolsLinc (outreach programmes for schools) Purpose The primary purpose of the Outreach Coordinator (Science) is to increase student numbers throughout Lincoln University by developing and implementing school outreach programmes that connect schools, teachers and the University. While this will predominantly focus on science areas, contributions to other areas is required. The Outreach Coordinator (Science) will complement the Outreach Coordinator and work with the SchoolsLinc Programme Manager to provide opportunities for teachers and students to benefit from the research excellence, expertise and equipment across Lincoln University Faculties. A key aspect of the role is to identify and develop opportunities to enhance NCEA Achievement Standards within land-based and science areas of the New Zealand Curriculum. This role provides teachers and classes with a range of on-and-off campus options that assist in promoting Lincoln University. Primary objectives of the role are: To create resources that assist teachers in the delivery of the NCEA curriculum, particularly science and agricultural and horticultural areas To provide teachers and classes with a range of on and off-campus options that assist in promoting Lincoln University and the Global Challenges Programme To work closely with the Student Liaison team and relevant groups to identify opportunities and develop initiatives 2
Key Outputs Technical Produce and deliver NCEA based programmes relevant to Lincoln University degrees both on campus and within New Zealand schools. Create resources that assist teachers in the delivery of the NCEA curriculum, particularly science, agricultural and horticultural science areas. Lead laboratory sessions, particularly around biology areas Create professional development opportunities for all teachers in the area of land-based industries, particularly science, agriculture and horticulture areas. Student Recruitment /Marketing/ Relationships Contribute to an annual operational plan for the Outreach programme based on feedback and consultation with key stakeholders. Promote the Global Challenges Programme and Outreach opportunities directly into schools, as well as initial information about undergraduate study at Lincoln University. Develop and build networks with teachers in target schools. Work with the University s Student Liaison team to facilitate the promotion of programmes at key events and when school groups are on campus. Communicate Lincoln University s excellence and leadership in areas of land-based research to teachers and their students. Treaty of Waitangi Support the University to meet its obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi. Key Performance Indicators NCEA programmes are relevant, available and taken up by increasing numbers of teachers. Activities are developed based on areas of excellence in the land-based industries at Lincoln University and are used widely. Numbers of teachers attending the professional development groups and activities increase. Students enjoy the campus experience and Outreach activities enhance their understanding of NCEA. Teachers and students perceive Lincoln University as a leader in the land-based industries. Secondary school students show increased interest and awareness of study options at Lincoln University. Demonstrates, and encourages others to demonstrate, support for the University s commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi. Health & Safety Become familiar, and comply with all H&S policies and procedures and legislative requirements in respect of occupational H&S. H&S procedures are followed during labs and other sessions, and all teachers and their students visiting the campus are made aware of safety issues in laboratories, lecture theatres and classrooms. Other Comply with all legal and University requirements for records management. All Lincoln University H&S policies and procedures legislative requirements in respect of occupational health and safety are complied with, and this includes notifying the employer of any hazard that has come to the employee s attention in the course of their employment. A risk assessment form is produced for each oncampus activity. All legal and University requirements are complied with in respect of the administration and management of all University records. Agreed duties and levels of service are met. 3
Key Outputs Other duties that may be required from time to time as agreed with the SchoolsLinc Programme Manager. Key Performance Indicators Staff Supervised The Outreach Coordinator is not responsible for the management of staff. Key Relationships The Outreach Coordinator is expected to establish effective working relationships with: SchoolsLinc staff Domestic Liaison Manager and Student Liaison staff Faculty Dean of: Agribusiness and Commerce; Environment, Society and Design; Agriculture and Life Sciences Head of Departments within each Faculty LincolnConnect staff Library, Teaching and Learning staff Other staff within Lincoln University as required External contacts. Accountability The Outreach Coordinator (Science) will work closely with the Outreach Coordinator and will report to the SchoolsLinc Programme Manager, then to the Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Business Development) and thence to the Vice-Chancellor. 4
Person Specification Qualifications and Experience Recent teaching experience in a New Zealand secondary school. Teaching experience in a science area (particularly Biology) is preferred. Current teacher s registration. An established and respected relationship with teachers. Experience in running and coordinating events. Technical Skills Proven time-management and organisation skills. Well-developed computing skills (incl. Microsoft Office). Highly developed written and oral communication skills. A full driver s licence is required. Personal Attributes Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment. The ability to communicate with, and relate well to, people from all backgrounds, ages and cultures. A strong customer focus and a warm and approachable personality. Proven ability to develop new initiatives and a willingness to go the extra mile. The ability to plan ahead, prioritise daily work assignments and exercise good judgement in managing urgent requests and changes. Attention to detail and the ability to see tasks through to completion. The ability to work effectively within a large complex organisation like Lincoln University, and promote a productive and respectful working environment. The ability to travel around New Zealand to visit key target regions, as agreed with the SchoolsLinc Programme Manager.
CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT GENERAL STAFF Term of Appointment This is a continuing appointment. Hours of Work This is a full time appointment of 37.5 hours per week. Remuneration Salary on commencement will be within the range $57,410 to $71,600 per annum [Grade 5] on the General Staff salary scale, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Employment Agreement If the appointee chooses to become a union member, the appointee will be bound by the Lincoln University General Staff Collective Employment Agreement. It contains a comprehensive range of conditions of employment for this position. Otherwise the appointee will have an Individual Employment Agreement based on the Lincoln University General Staff Collective Employment Agreement. The conditions outlined in this document are indicators of some of the key items of that agreement. Annual Leave Annual leave entitlement is five weeks per annum. The appointee is also entitled to statutory holidays in accordance with the Holidays Act. In addition, the appointee is entitled to the last working day before Christmas Day, the three working days between Christmas and New Year, and Easter Tuesday as University holidays, in accordance with the Lincoln University General Staff Collective Employment Agreement. Health and Safety The appointee will work and act at all times in compliance with all Lincoln University requirements in respect of occupational health and safety. University staff can join the Recreation Centre on campus. The Centre offers a wide range of facilities and services, for example: gymnasium, weights room, exercise classes, fitness assessments, massage, squash courts.
