1 FACULTY OF SCIENCE Senior Laboratory Technician Analytical Facilities - (0.4 FTE) Ref: TC456 The Post Working within the Analytical Instrument Facility, the post holder will provide technical support to the Faculty s practical teaching, research and commercial activities, the post holder will be responsible for ensuring efficient operation of analytical instrumentation in a central service facility. The Faculty encompasses research and teaching in a wide range of sciences and consists of the following Schools of Study: School of Biological Sciences School of Chemistry School of Computing Sciences School of Environmental Sciences School of Mathematics School of Pharmacy Job Description A job description is attached as Appendix A. The precise duties will be agreed in discussion with the Manager. Person Specification The person specification for this post is attached as Appendix B.

2 GENERAL Salary Salary will be 20,374 to 23,585 per annum, pro rata on Grade 5 on the single salary spine. The normal expectation is that starting salary will be at the minimum of the advertised salary scale. Starting date This indefinite part-time (0.4 FTE) post is available from 3 November Terms and Conditions of appointment Full details of terms and conditions of employment for Technical staff will be made available to the candidate to whom the appointment is offered. Annual Leave Entitlement There is an annual holiday entitlement of 20 days plus statutory (8 days) and customary (6 days) holidays, pro rata. Superannuation The post is superannuable under the Universities Superannuation Scheme. 5 APPENDIX A JOB DESCRIPTION Job title: Senior Laboratory Technician (Analytical Facilities) Grade: 5 Faculty: Faculty of Science Reporting to: Analytical Facilities Manager. Job function/purpose: Responsible, under the direction of the Analytical Facility Manager, for the operation and maintenance of a variety of analytical instrumentation. Working as part of a team the post holder will be responsible for efficient sample handling, general laboratory health and safety and ensure a high standard of service provision. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Laboratory Support and Services: Operate scientific instrumentation in support of research and commercial projects. Responsible for sample and materials preparation, analytical method development, data handling, reporting and quality control. Manage and maintain instrument booking systems. Responsible for equipment calibration, maintenance, service and repair to include electrical safety checks. Maintain chemical and consumable stocks, keeping accurate records and inventories. Provide staff and students (PhD and MSc) with training in safe and correct use of instrumentation. Maintain equipment logs, manuals and standard operating procedures. Provide general cover within central laboratory facilities. Administration and Supervision: Supervision of, and allocation of duties to, junior technical staff Training and guidance of technical staff in laboratory procedures. Liaise with university staff, clients, external suppliers and service providers. Assisting and input to resource planning and management. Health and Safety: Preparation of COSHH, Standard Operating Procedures and Risk Assessment forms. Research information in relation to correct Health and safety practice and policy. Maintaining training records. Assisting in the preparation of Health and Safety reports. Any other such duties as may be assigned by the Manager

Essential PERSON SPECIFICATION APPENDIX B Prepared by: Liz Rix Date: May 2014 Desirable Education A minimum of 3 A Level passes (or equivalent qualification) to include a Science subject; or one of the following in a relevant field: BTEC Certificate or Diploma, HNC or HND Experience Proven general laboratory experience. Experience in general laboratory instrumentation. Technical experience of analytical equipment, to include equipment maintenance, calibration and repair. Skills & Knowledge Background knowledge of scientific principles. Knowledge of laboratory safety issues. Good laboratory housekeeping skills and familiar with good laboratory practice. Knowledge of basic chemistry skills. General PC skills, able to use windows and general software applications. Laboratory experience with Continuous flow analyser, TOC, IC and HPLC. Laboratory experience with GC, GCIRMS, ICPOES and ICPMS. Experience of delivering instruction and training in methodology and equipment use. Thorough understanding of laboratory safety issues. Familiar with COSHH and risk assessments. Experience in more complex software. i.e. instrument software or data processing software. Training Skills. Personal Attributes Good communication skills and the ability to work closely with other people. Good organisational skills. Willingness to undertake appropriate training Special Circumstances.
