2 Overview The Faculty of Social Sciences is a large and diverse grouping of thirteen departments that offer professional education alongside more traditional social science disciplines. This rich and exciting disciplinary mix encompasses both world-leading academic research and education and a strong practitioner focus in particular areas. About the Department The Department of Journalism Studies marks its twentieth anniversary this year and in that time we have become one of the major journalism research and teaching establishments in the UK. We are committed to a teaching and research programme that takes an increasingly interdisciplinary approach to the fields of journalism, political communication and digital media. We have two research centres, one committed to studying freedom of the media and the safety of journalists and the other for the study of journalism and history. Our staff are drawn from both journalism and academia and we have an excellent network of national and international contacts both in journalism and in the academic world. We have a thriving international community of postgraduate research students, taught postgraduates and undergraduates. Our alumni are working in newsrooms in the UK and abroad as reporters, editors, producers, presenters while others have gone on to academic careers. We have topped the National Student Survey in our field on five occasions and every major UK university league table places us in the top five. The department has grown significantly in recent years. Our undergraduate programme is one of the most applied for in the country and is accredited by all three industry bodies, the National Council for the Training of Journalists, the Broadcast Journalism Training Council and the Periodical Publishers Association. 3 Job Role The department is now seeking to recruit a University Teacher who will contribute to the teaching of journalism practice at mainly undergraduate level. You will have at least an undergraduate degree or relevant experience. You will also have a strong profile within journalism and substantial recent experience in journalism nationally or regionally, at a senior level, ideally spread over digital, magazine and/or newspaper brands. You will be familiar with the industry s transition to digital methods of storytelling and content generation and may have been involved in shaping and delivering an online strategy yourself. The successful candidate will know how to teach journalism in an effective and inspiring way. You ll have an eye for a great story; understand the essentials of great journalism and how it is done in the digital age. You ll be active on social media with sophisticated knowledge of its advantages and pitfalls for journalists. You ll be expert in getting and using information from an extensive contacts book. You will be expected to keep in touch with developments in journalism practice and feed them directly into your teaching. You may have experience of teaching in higher education and may have, or be working towards, a postgraduate qualification in teaching. You ll be able to demonstrate an innovative approach to learning and teaching and have an imaginative approach to the use of digital technology in learning and teaching. You will be able to think beyond the lecture/workshop/seminar model to bring fresh thinking to journalism education. You will have the ability to make a substantial contribution curriculum development and be able to translate your experience into effective and innovative teaching. You ll have an understanding of the landscape of higher education and how journalism education in particular is situated in a Russell Group University. You will be expected to demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the significance of the research environment relevant to journalism and how this is applied within learning and teaching. You ll also be able to work collaboratively with research active members of staff for the benefit of all students and engage with wider learning and teaching issues within the university.

4 Job Description Main Duties and Responsibilities Prepare and deliver whole or parts of modules, which includes preparing material and delivering lectures, workshops and tutorials. Undertake student assessment through marking and providing written and oral feedback Supervise undergraduate and taught postgraduate final journalism projects. Apply course and module learning outcomes to teaching and liaise with other module leaders and support staff to ensure the delivery of innovative and high quality teaching that fulfils department objectives. Contribute to curriculum development to ensure that provision is up to date and industry relevant. Carry out course and module evaluation; reflect on your own teaching design and delivery and implement ideas for improving your own performance. Keep in touch with developments in journalism practice and ensure they are reflected in your teaching. Plan and prioritise own daily work. For teaching, plan up to one year ahead unless there are significant teaching programme changes or new courses, then plan for up to two years ahead of their introduction. Respond to ad hoc requests relating to teaching and supervision. Undertake administrative duties. Attend appropriate departmental committees. Any other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post. Person Specification Applicants should provide evidence in their applications that they meet the following criteria. Criteria Qualifications and experience 1. A good honours degree or relevant experience. Essential Desirable 2. Proven teaching ability and experience. 3. Substantial and recent journalism experience in print and online.

5 4 Possess or be willing to undertake a recognised teaching qualification. Communication skills 5 Sophisticated communication skills, both written and verbal. 6 Ability to engage with and inspire students. 7 Ability to develop and provide imaginative and innovative learning opportunities compatible with contemporary journalism. 8 Ability to translate your professional experience into effective and engaging teaching. Team working 9 Experience of working effectively as a member of a team as well as your working on your own initiative. Problem solving and decision making 10 Ability to develop creative approaches to problem solving. 11 Ability to analyse and solve problems with an appreciation of longer-term implications. Project management 12 Ability to assess and organise resources, and plan and progress work activities. Personal effectiveness 13 Excellent organisational skills and the ability to undertake administrative duties. 14 Experience of developing and maintaining a network of contacts throughout own work area. 15 Proven ability to work to and meet deadlines.
