1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Responsible to: Head of Learning and Standards Director of Faculty Salary grade: Management Scale Hours per week: 21.6 hours per week Main Purpose of the Role 1. To manage the delivery of education and training to students at the college within the relevant subject areas and to act as a specialist in these subject areas. 2. To effectively lead and manage teaching and teaching support staff within a curriculum area through clear, strong and supportive management and communication. 3. To be responsible and accountable for managing improvements in teaching and related curriculum activities to maximise effective learning for all students by maximising each student s personal attainment and achievement. 4. To be responsible for and accountable for prioritising those curriculum and related activities that have an explicit and measurable impact in achieving effective learning for individual learners within a curriculum area. For example curriculum and related areas to be managed include: Curriculum design and implementation Teaching, learning and assessment Enrolment and induction Tutorial design and delivery Pastoral support Quality processes Human resource management and recruitment 5. To be a member of the Faculty Management Team reporting directly to the Director and to represent the Director of Faculty as appropriate.
2 6. To ensure that all courses in the curriculum area achieve success rates that are significantly above the national benchmark. Principal Accountabilities A Quality Management and Improvement 1. Ensuring that student performance measurably increases as measured by retention rates, achievement rates, success rates and value added. 2. Ensuring that course targets for the maintenance or improvement of standards reflect College and sector-wide benchmarks for recruitment retention, achievement, success and value added. 3. Ensuring that teaching, learning and assessment strategies and other curriculum activities (e.g. tutorials) respond to individual learning needs, promote independent life-long learning and are designed to maximise individual learning and success. 4. Managing the curriculum to ensure that each course is organised and delivered to maximise individual learning and success and meet the requirements of the awarding bodies. 5. Ensuring that the curriculum is supported and underpinned with effective schemes of work, assignment planners and lesson planning. 6. Integrating all elements of the learning process (e.g. main course, programme of study, Functional Skills, Additional Learner Support, and tutorial) into all individuals courses to personalise learning and maximise success. 7. Ensuring that student assessment records are kept and that compliance is achieved with regard to tracking and monitoring of student performance and supporting students to improve. 8. Ensuring that there is robust internal verification and recording and reporting of internally-awarded marks in place that conforms with College policy and complies with the requirements of external awarding bodies. 9. Integrating quality improvement activities to ensure success rates that are significantly above the national benchmark. 10. Promoting the use of contemporary teaching and learning and assessment methods including e-learning that ensure quality and efficiency of curriculum delivery 11. Carrying out lesson observations and participating in other measures related to quality improvement in teaching, learning and assessment.

Writing a Self Assessment Report (SAR) and producing a Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) for the area of responsibility based on a critical reading, evaluation and moderation of termly programme reviews; monitoring the progress of individual courses against action plans on an on-going basis and assessing the impact of the QIP. B Audit and Inspection 1. Playing a key role in external inspection, internal and external audit and ensuring that staff members within the area of responsibility are aware of any requirements to support those activities. C Management of Human Resources 1. Managing and developing staff within the curriculum area to ensure optimum performance for the College, in the areas of performance management, absence management. Personal and professional development and health, safety and wellbeing. 2. Leading and implementing, with the Director, the College s performance management scheme for teaching and teaching support staff. 3. Implementing the College Quality Improvement Strategy related to teaching and learning including monitoring and evaluation, the interventions required as a result of course consultative meetings and taking swift and corrective action relating to student performance: 4. Performance management and development of staff within the curriculum area to ensure optimum performance for the College. D Financial Management 1. To be a cost centre with responsibility for the departmental budgets within the area of responsibility. E Curriculum Planning and Operational Implementation 1. Keeping up to date with curriculum developments and to participate in the ongoing review and design of the curriculum to ensure that it meets the needs of learners and meets the College aims and objectives and policies and procedures. 2. Ensuring that course entry requirements are kept under review and are appropriate, clear and comparable across subject sector areas. 3. Supporting and facilitating the timetabling process, including rooming and staff deployment, and liaising with relevant staff members at all levels of the organisation.
4 F Student Management and Guidance 1. Ensuring individual students access and receive all relevant College services (e.g. enrichment, counselling, finance) to meet their individual needs to maximise their learning and success. 2. Ensuring that all students are supported through the implementation of appropriate processes including: Participating in the preparation of marketing materials (e.g. prospectus) Interviewing, recruitment and enrolment Initial assessment Ongoing monitoring and review of progress and achievement Implementation of effective tutorial / pastoral support Induction Monitoring of attendance and punctuality Student behaviour and discipline, including participating in the Duty Principal rota General 1. Lead, promote and support the development of the College s Equality and Diversity policies, procedures and practices as they relate to students/staff. 2. Develop effective contact, liaison and working relationships with colleagues in the College and other bodies as appropriate. 3. Support the development of the learning organisation and facilitate cultural change. 4. To engage in professional development and networking to ensure that professional and strategic contributions are up-to-date. 5. Complying with the College Health and Safety Policy and all relevant health and safety requirements, including taking responsibility for authorising College journeys, trips and visits within their area. 6. Participating actively in the performance management scheme, agreeing objectives, attending reviews and undertaking staff development as required. 7. All employees are expected to be fully committed to policies and processes on equality, diversity and safeguarding. 8. Such other duties as may be reasonably expected of the post holder. Experience as a teacher for students aged 16 to A professional qualification at Level 4 or above. 3. A recognised teaching qualification at Level 5 or above. 4.
