Blue Link Slutins Terminal Server Cnfiguratin Backgrund This dcument describes the quickest methd pssible fr cnfiguring Blue Link Slutins t run in a terminal server envirnment. In additin, this dcument prvides detailed technical ntes, including cnfiguratin tips that will allw yu take advantages f all the features this envirnment has t ffer. Fr the purpse f this dcument, it is assumed that yu have a Windws 2000 Terminal Server; hwever the many f the cncepts can be applied t ther envirnments such as Citrix, r t lder versins f Terminal Server. Applicatin Server mde vs. Remte Administratin Mde As f Windws 2000 Server, Micrsft has included terminal services as a standard feature. By default, if yu install terminal services, they will be installed in Remte Administratin mde. In this mde, a maximum f tw (2) terminal server sessins can exist. T cnfigure the Terminal Server t supprt mre than tw (2) users, yu must change the mde f yur server frm Remte Administratin t Applicatin Server. T d this, r t install terminal services if nt already installed fllw these cnfiguratin steps: T remve Remte Administratin terminal services Click Start Cntrl Panel Add/Remve Prgrams Click the Add/Remve Windws Cmpnents buttn t display the fllwing screen: Clear the checkbx beside Terminal Services If the checkbx beside Terminal Services is already clear, then Terminal Services are nt already installed, prceed t the Installing Terminal Services in Applicatin Server Mde step belw Hw t Install Blue Link Slutins in a Terminal Server Envirnment Page 2 f 21 April 9, 2002

The next step is t activate yur terminal server with Micrsft. The activatin prcess is FREE and simply allws the license server t start allcating client access licenses. T activate the server, start the Terminal Server Licensing applicatin: Start Prgrams Administrative Tls (r Start Settings Cntrl Panel Administrative Tls) Terminal Services Licensing) If the activatin wizard des nt appear immediately, select Activate Server frm the Actin menu. Fllw the steps in the wizard t activate the server. (Our experience is that the Internet activatin is the quickest if yu have access t the Internet and an e-mail accunt). Client Licenses Once the license server is active, yu have t decide whether r nt client licenses have t be purchased. Blue Link Slutins Terminal Server Cnfiguratin Yu d NOT need t purchase a Terminal Server client access license fr a particular cmputer if: The cmputer that will cnnect is running ne f the fllwing Micrsft Operating Systems: Windws 2000 Prfessinal r Server Windws XP Prfessinal Is a.net Server Yu DO have t purchase a Terminal Server client access license fr a particular cmputer if: The cmputer that will cnnect is running ne f the fllwing Micrsft Operating Systems: Windws 95 Windws 98 Windws ME Warning Win9x Licenses are permanently assigned t the MACHINE: If yu have purchased Terminal Server Client Access Licenses fr yur Win9x machines, BE CAREFUL abut the rder in which yu cnnect yur clients t yur terminal server. When Win 9x clients cnnect t a terminal server (where the server has had SP 2 installed) a license is temprarily assigned t the MACHINE (based n a unique identifier fr that particular machine). If that same machine re-cnnects within a certain timeframe, the machine is permanently assigned that license. The license will be unavailable fr any ther Win 9x machine attempting t cnnect. Yu shuld be careful because yu may inadvertently cnnect nn-essential cmputers t the terminal server (such as emplyee s hme cmputers befre cnnecting all ffice PCs). T avid this prblem, we recmmend establishing at least tw terminal server sessins with the server frm all Win9x clients t secure the permanent licenses fr thse cmputers. Add up the ttal number f cmputers fr which licenses will have t be purchased then prceed t the next step. Installing Client Licenses The last step f the server activatin wizard asked if yu wanted t install client access licenses nw. If this screen is still active, click YES, therwise, in the Terminal Server Licensing manager, expand the All Servers tree, right-click yur server name and chse Install Licenses. Fllw the steps in the wizard t install the new licenses. (Nte: licenses can be purchased directly frm Micrsft, r thrugh yur cmputer reseller. If yu have a Multiple Open License Prgram (MOLP) cntract, yu may be able t purchase yur terminal server licenses at a discunt. Fr infrmatin n btaining a MOLP cntract, cntact yur lcal cmputer sftware supplier and ask abut MOLP.) Installing the RDP Client t Client wrkstatins T cnnect t yur terminal server, the guest cmputers will require the Terminal Services Client, als knwn as Remte Desktp Cnnectin. Client cmputers running Windws XP Prfessinal already have the client installed in the fllwing lcatin: Start Prgrams Accessries Cmmunicatins Remte Desktp Cnnectin. Windws XP RDP Client (Available fr mre than just Windws XP) The versin f the RDP Client that ships with Windws XP is the mst recent versin at this writing and can be installed t ther perating systems as well (such as Windws 9x). T install the mst recent client, cpy \SUPPORT\TOOLS\MSRDPCLI.EXE frm a Windws XP installatin CD t the server and run this file n all client wrkstatins that are t cnnect t the Terminal Server. (Nte: n sme client wrkstatins it may be necessary t rebt the cmputer and re-run the MSRDPCLI.EXE setup prgram mre than nce while supprting files are updated.) If yu dn t have a Windws XP CD, yu can als dwnlad the Micrsft RDP Client directly frm Micrsft at the fllwing URL: http://www.micrsft.cm/windwsxp/pr/dwnlads/rdclientdl.asp Hw t Install Blue Link Slutins in a Terminal Server Envirnment Page 4 f 21 April 9, 2002

Old Terminal Server Client If yu dn t have access t Windws XP media, yu can still cnnect t the Terminal Server using the lder Terminal Services Client. Run the Terminal Services Client Creatr lcated in the Administrative Tls grup fr instructins n building Terminal Services Client installatin diskettes. Cnfiguring Dmain Cntrllers Such as Small Business Server If yur Terminal Server is als a dmain cntrller, special security plicy changes must be implemented befre yur users will be able t cnnect. By default, all dmain cntrllers prevent users wh are nt administratrs frm cnnecting. T allw clients t cnnect t a Dmain Cntrller, tw cnfiguratin ptins must be changed n yur server: Nte: Blue Link des nt recmmend using a Small Business Server (SBS) as a Terminal Server. Due t the demands placed n the server by ther applicatins such as Micrsft Exchange Server ur test have shwn that even very pwerful hardware cnfiguratins (dual prcessr, gigabytes f memry) when running Small Business Server may perfrm prly in cmparisn t the same cnfiguratin n a stand-alne server withut SBS installed. There are ther technical issues t cnsider with SBS as described in Micrsft KB article # Q282009. Blue Link Slutins Terminal Server Cnfiguratin Installing Blue Link Slutins t the Terminal Server In a terminal server envirnment, all applicatins must be installed using the Add/Remve Prgrams ptin in cntrl panel. T install Blue Link Slutins fllw these steps: Step 1: Install Slutins Lg in as a server Administratr Click Start Settings Cntrl Panel Add/Remve Prgrams Add New Prgrams CD r Flppy Brwse t the setup.exe file lcated n yur CD Rm drive, and perfrm a cmplete installatin. Step 2: Cnfigure the lcatin f the data files Fr ptimal perfrmance, it is HIGHLY recmmended that the applicatin file and Data File be n the terminal server. Create a Slutins flder ff the rt f the data drive n the terminal server, and mve the Dem Data file frm C:\Prgram Files\Slutins Accunting\ flder t the \Slutins flder yu just created. Step 3: Cnfigure the lcatin f the Master applicatin file Under the \Slutins flder yu created earlier, create a Master flder (i.e. d:\slutins\master). Mve the Blue Link Slutins applicatin file frm the frm C:\Prgram Files\Slutins Accunting\ flder t the \Slutins flder yu just created. (Depending n the versin f Slutins yu purchased, the applicatin file culd be called elite.mde r prfessinal.mde. Step 4: Create a Distribute t Termserv.bat file Blue Link Slutins requires that every user run with a different applicatin file. In additin, t ensure ptimal perfrmance, the applicatin file shuld be updated n a daily basis with a fresh cpy f the master. T streamline this prcess create a Distribute t Termserv.bat file as described belw: In the \Slutins\Master flder, right-click, and chse New Text Dcument. Rename the text dcument t Distribute t Termserv.bat Answer YES t the warning abut the file name change. Edit the file: Imprtant nte: if yu did nt get a warning abut the file extensin being changed yu may have the Hide File Extensins fr Knwn File Types ptin turned n. Turn this ptin ff (under Tls, Flder Optins), then re-name the file again t exclude the.txt extensin the extensin must be.bat. Right-click the Distribute t Termserv.bat file yu ve just created, select Edit and cpy the fllwing lines int it: @ech ff ech This file autmatically cpies the applicatin file t all terminal server users. Cpy D:\Slutins\Master\elite.mde C:\Prgram Files\Blue Link\Slutins\Elite-Username1.mde Cpy D:\Slutins\Master\elite.mde C:\Prgram Files\Blue Link\Slutins\Elite-Username2.mde Cpy D:\Slutins\Master\elite.mde C:\Prgram Files\Blue Link\Slutins\Elite-Username3.mde Cpy D:\Slutins\Master\elite.mde C:\Prgram Files\Blue Link\Slutins\Elite-Username4.mde Replace the UsernameX part f the cpy lines abve with the actual Windws Lgin User Names f yur users. This step is very imprtant the usernames yu enter must exactly match their usernames n the dmain r server. Fr a list f users n yur server pen cmputer management, and then click users. Fr a list f users n yur dmain, pen Active Directry Users and Cmputers. Add lines t this file as necessary t accmmdate additinal users. If yu are running a different versin f Slutins (i.e. Prfessinal, substitute that name fr Elite abve). Run the batch file t create the instances f the elite app files. Blue Link Slutins Terminal Server Cnfiguratin Step 5: Schedule Autmatic Nightly Distributin f the app file T eliminate the need fr maintenance f the applicatin file, we recmmend replacing the applicatin file n a nightly basis with a fresh cpy f the master.mde file. Start Settings Cntrl Panel Scheduled Tasks Add Scheduled Task A wizard will appear, Click Next Click Brwse, then select the Distribute t Termserv.bat file yu created in the previus step (i.e. D:\Slutins\Master\Distribute t Termserv.bat ) Select Daily, click Next Change the Start time t 2AM (r sme ther early mrning hur when it is unlikely fr users t be lgged int the system), click Next. Enter the username and passwrd under which this task shuld run. Be sure t select a username that will have write permissin t the C:\Prgram Files\Blue Link\Slutins flder, and whse passwrd will nt change. Click Next. Click Finish Yu nw have a scheduled task that will run every night t update yur applicatin files. Step 6: Cnfigure Desktp and Start Menu Shrtcuts Each user must run a different cpy f the applicatin file (i.e. ne per user). In step 4, yu wrte a batch file t create the applicatin files required, including the user s usernames. In Windws 2000, the windws username can be represented with the system variable %username%. T simplify administratin f shrtcuts, we recmmend using the system variable in the shrtcut as fllws: Right-Click the Slutins Elite (r Slutins Prfessinal ) icn n the All Users desktp, and chse Prperties. Edit the very last part f the shrtcut t read elite-%username%.mde r prfessinal- %username%.mde as yur case may warrant. The imprtant part here is t include the %username% in the lcatin where the username shuld appear. Ding this will have the effect f launching the user-specific.mde file when the app is launched using this shrtcut. Repeat this prcedure fr the shrtcut n the all users start menu: Start Prgrams Blue Link Slutins Elite menu Step 7: Set file system security permissins In rder t run Blue Link Slutins, ALL users f the applicatin MUST have read/write permissins t the fllwing flders: C:\Prgram Files\Blue Link\Slutins <substitute yur drive / path as apprpriate> D:\Slutins <substitute yur drive / path as apprpriate> Hw t Install Blue Link Slutins in a Terminal Server Envirnment Page 11 f 21 April 9, 2002

Blue Link Slutins Terminal Server Cnfiguratin Appendix 1 Printing t user s Lcal Printers Windws 2000 Terminal Servers supprt a feature called Printer Mapping which allws the user s lcal printer(s) t be available under the Terminal Server sessin, and t be set as the default printer. In rder fr this cnfiguratin t wrk the fllwing must be in place: The Printer Driver must already be installed n the Windws 2000 Server, OR, the client cnnecting must be a Windws 2000 r Windws XP client with the printer driver already installed. Printer mapping must NOT be disabled in either the Terminal Services Cnfiguratin, r the individual user s accunt. Hw t Pre-Lad the Server with Printer Drivers fr all Client Printers Take an inventry f the printers yur users will want t use. Be sure t ask users fr the makes & mdels f any printers they will want t use frm hme. Open the printers flder n the terminal server, (Start Settings Printers) then frm the File Menu, chse Server Prperties : Click the Drivers tab, then click the Add buttn Select the name brand and printer mdel yu want t install. If the printer mdel yu need t install is nt in the list, dwnlad the Windws 2000 driver frm the manufacturer s web site (i.e. www.hp.cm, www.lexmark.cm, www.cann.cm, etc.), then install that driver. What s imprtant is that the make and mdel number f the printer match the make and mdel f printer that is installed n the user s wrkstatin. Blue Link Slutins Terminal Server Cnfiguratin Inspect the Server and User Cnfiguratin Terminal Services Cnfiguratin Cnsle In the Terminal Services Cnfiguratin Cnsle, (Start Settings Cntrl Panel Administrative Tls Terminal Server Cnfiguratin): Either Use cnnectin settings frm user settings (recmmended), r turn ff that ptin, and check the Cnnect client printers at lgn, and default t main client printer ptins. The advantage f using cnnectin settings frm user settings is that if a particular client s printers are causing prblems with the server (sme printer drivers have been knwn t hang the entire print subsystem n the server, in which case n users can print at all), yu ll have the ability t disable client printer mapping fr a particular user (withut having t disable it fr all users). Nte: T default t the user s regular Terminal Server cnnected printer, yu may ptinally remve the Default t main client printer checkbx. This will have the effect f cnnecting the client s printers s they are available t them, but by default will print t the regular ffice printer. D NOT check the bx beside Windws Printer Mapping. The LPT prt mapping setting is irrelevant since Slutins des nt print t LPT prts. User Settings In Active Directry Users and Cmputers, inspect the individual user s settings fr printer mapping: Hw t Install Blue Link Slutins in a Terminal Server Envirnment Page 14 f 21 April 9, 2002
Blue Link Slutins Terminal Server Cnfiguratin Turn n the Cnnect client printers at lgn and ptinally, the Default t main client printer ptins. Client printer mapping shuld nw be peratinal. Other Technical Ntes abut Printer Mapping The next time the user cnnects the default printer they had cnfigured n their desktp machine will nw be available t them in the Terminal Server sessin. As mentined previusly, hwever, if n Windws 2000 printer driver was installed t the server, the printer will nt be available. If yu have ntebk cmputer users wh frequently cnnect t third party printers, we recmmend that the users install thse printers as lcal printers n their machines, chsing t create new lcal prts with the UNC path t the printer instead f cnnecting directly t the freign printer. Fr example: D nt cnnect using the netwrk printer ptin in the add printer wizard. D nt cnnect using right-click n the printer name methd. Instead, encurage yur ntebk users t always create lcal printers, then create new lcal prts where the prt name is the UNC path (i.e. \\server\hp4000) printer share. Cnnecting freign netwrk printers (printers n netwrks ther than yur wn) as lcal printers will prevent cnnectin issues with the terminal server, will prevent event lg errr messages, and may prevent the server frm hanging the print service in sme cases. Blue Link Slutins Terminal Server Cnfiguratin Appendix B Maintenance Discnnect Idle Sessins, End Discnnected The Slutins data file has t be maintained n a daily basis t ensure ptimal perfrmance. This maintenance cannt ccur if the applicatin file is still pen with a cnnectin t the data file. T prevent users frm leaving cnnected applicatins pen after they ve discnnected their terminal server sessins, we recmmend implementing the fllwing Terminal Server cnfiguratin: Discnnect Idle Sessins After 1 r 2 hurs In the Terminal Services Cnfiguratin Cnsle, (Start Settings Cntrl Panel Administrative Tls Terminal Server Cnfiguratin): Click the Sessins tab. Enable the Override user settings checkbx. Set the End a discnnected sessin t 3 hurs. Set the Idle sessin limit t 1 r 2 hurs. Turning n these settings will ensure that all users are discnnected and that their sessins are reset (n applicatins running) by the time the nightly maintenance rutines yu ve cnfigures (nt described in this dcument) run. T end the sessin, by default press CTRL+* (n the number pad). Reminders T use the remte cntrl feature: Yu must be cnnected t the terminal server in a terminal server sessin. Since being cnnected t a terminal server sessin is a pre-requisite, it shuld be nted that remte supprt is nly pssible if yu can already cnnect t the Terminal Server. Vendrs wishing t supprt their clients in this manner shuld ensure that they can establish this cnnectin thrugh the firewall r ther netwrk device. Remember TCP/IP Prt 3389 must be enabled. Yu must have permissin t pen the Terminal Services Manager. Hw t Install Blue Link Slutins in a Terminal Server Envirnment Page 18 f 21 April 9, 2002
Blue Link Slutins Terminal Server Cnfiguratin Appendix D Launching Slutins as the nly applicatin Specifying the cmmand line t run n cnnectin either at the server level, r at the client level can make the Terminal Server sessin appear as if it is the Slutins applicatin itself. The prcedures described belw are similar t the publish applicatin feature fund in Citrix. Optin 1 Server-Side Cnfiguratin If yu have a grup f users whse sle purpse fr using the Terminal Server is t run Blue Link Slutins, yu may want t cnfigure their prfiles t launch Blue Link Slutins autmatically n cnnecting t the Terminal Server. T cnfigure this ptin: Start by cpying the cmmand line frm an existing Blue Link Slutins shrtcut.
