Destination Downtown South Boston, Inc. Destination Downtown South Boston, Inc. (DDSB) is a non-profit 501(c)3 charity organization. Our Mission is: To ensure the long-term viability of the downtown area as a center of commerce, a source of civic activity and pride, a resource for attracting new businesses and residents, and a hub of educational and cultural opportunities. Critical to this effort is promoting a small-town quality of life, preserving historic resources, and capitalizing on South Boston s unique heritage and hospitality. South Boston was designated as a Virginia Main Street (VMS) community in August of 2004. The National Main Street Program & Center came to life in 1980 as a result of the National Trust for Historic Preservation s work to stem the loss of significant commercial architecture due to economic decline in America s smaller downtowns. Virginia adopted the program in 1985 as an initiative of the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). To date there are 26 Main Street communities in Virginia. The Main Street Approach is a Strategy for Success working in each of four key, interconnected areas: Design Enhancing the unique visual quality of downtown by addressing all design elements to create an appealing environment. Promotion Creating and marketing a positive image based on the unique attributes of the downtown district. Economic Restructuring Strengthening downtown s existing economic assets and fulfilling its broadest market potential. Organization Establishing consensus and cooperation by building effective partnerships among all downtown stakeholders. In addition to these four points we use eight guiding principles in our efforts: Comprehensive Action Incremental Progress Public-Private Partnerships Building on Existing Assets Action-Oriented Changing Attitudes Quality Self-Help 2
The Main Street approach uses a mechanism of incremental steps to accomplish its goals. It is not a quick fix and it does not show results overnight. It is a time proven methodical approach to restoration & revitalization. Our goal is to continue our work which will create an environment that encourages existing building and business owners, as well as attracting new businesses, to want to continue to invest in the Downtown Business District. This investment expands well beyond our Downtown district with economic impact on all of Halifax County and the Town of South Boston. This is seen through new jobs creation, sales tax revenue and reinvestment of dollars by people shopping locally. It also has an impact on Tourism dollars being spent here. DDSB has been able to create goals and infuse a fresh spirit of change into the South Boston community. We are successful in forging the principles of a successful downtown organization into a working unit. DDSB s major responsibilities are to educate, build consensus, stimulate the downtown economy through action, focus activity on downtown and maximize volunteer participation. Very important is our responsibility and accountability for the Main Street Program. Fundraising is an important part of our responsibilities. To review our work plan, visit www.downtownsobo.com We are a volunteer organization that must obtain funding through donations and fundraising. Our organization also provides community entertainment through the events that we sponsor. We cannot provide these events and reach our goals without your help in sponsoring these events.
