CAUSE OVERVIEW Over twenty years ago, community leaders and philanthropists recognized South Florida s need for a university-based cancer center in order to provide world-class cancer care to patients. Sylvester opened its doors in 1992, and has gained the attention and respect of the international cancer community. Today, more than 200 new treatments and screenings are now available to Sylvester patients. There are 116 scientists and 147 physicians who are working side by side to research and implement how cancer is treated, and more than one million patients have been personally impacted by Sylvester. One in three Americans will develop cancer. This startling statistic suggests that virtually every family will face at least one cancer diagnosis. For those of us in South Florida who have or will need to make critical decisions regarding a cancer diagnosis, it is heartening to know we can find those answers in our own backyard at Sylvester. EVENT OVERVIEW On Thursday evening, February 13th, more than 600 members of South Florida s philanthropic and business community will gather at the Ice Palace, to support cancer research at Sylvester. This signature fund raising event features tastings by more than 30 renowned Miami restaurants highlighting the flavors of South Florida, as well as premium mixology bars featuring the most current cocktail creations. The highlight of the evening, featuring world-renowned fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, will be the powerful, inspiring and fashion forward runway show starring Sylvester patient/survivors and their caregivers as they turn into models, alongside professional models. On this evening, we will also be honoring Jennifer Stearns Buttrick, who chaired the event in 2008 and 2011, with the very first Harcourt M. and Virginia W. Sylvester Philanthropist of the Year Award, for her hard work and dedication to Sylvester. The evening will conclude with an after party of music, dancing and an exclusive dessert tasting. The evening s time line will be as follows: 6:00 PM: An exclusive VIP cocktail reception giving first access to restaurant tasting tables and the much anticipated silent auction 7:00 PM: The cocktail reception will open to general admission guests 8:30 PM: Fashion show featuring patient/survivors in Oscar de la Renta Designs and professional models dressed in Oscar de la Renta s Spring 2014 Collection 10:00 PM: The after party including music and dessert tastings The survivor/patients in this event are a shining example of just how far we ve come in cancer research.
