OBJECTIVES Overall Program: Participants will be able to discuss the latest strategies for prevention, identification and management of arrhythmia disorders. Participants will be able to: 1. Describe the pathophysiology and clinical characteristics of tachyarrhythmias 2. Differentiate between benign and malignant ventricular tachycardia 3. Describe the pathophysiology and clinical characteristics of each syncope etiology 4. Describe the diagnosis and treatment of vasovagal syncope in detail 5. Explain the function of arrhythmia devices and indications for implantation 6. Identify clinical signs of device infection and first steps to diagnose 7. Debate end of life issues for patients with ICDs 8. Discuss case study examples including patient evaluation and management strategies aligned with topics of morning lectures 9. Interpret EKG examples ranging from easy to difficult to interpret 10. Discuss correlations between patient presentation and EKG findings 11. Identify differing pathophysiology of both atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter 12. Define indications for atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter ablation, including pacemaker and AV node ablation 13. Compare novel anticoagulants to warfarin 14. Describe the stroke risk for patients using CHADSVASC 15. Discuss high intensity and moderate intensity use of statins in primary and secondary risk reduction for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease 16. Review safety considerations with the use of statin therapy

After completing a fellowship in medical ethics, Dr. Baru continued with an intensive learning experience in clinical practice and teaching of palliative care at Harvard Medical School. He also participated in the Academic Hospitalist Academy at the Society of Hospital Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, as a learning experience created to help faculty develop the skills to become the premier teachers and educational leaders at their institutions. Since that time, Dr. Baru has been an academic leader, winning several recognitions and awards from medical students. He currently serves as the Course Director for Clinical Medical Ethics at Rush University Medical College. He is extensively published and is a sought after speaker on the topics of palliative care and medical ethics.
