Errol has been employed at the school for 35 years and provided a commitment to the development and maintenance of the grounds with passion and pride. He has been a strong advocate for the school, students and staff and has always been willing to do the extra unpaid work to ensure the school is well presented. Students, staff and families have enjoyed his friendly character and willingness to help out wherever possible. A farewell assembly will be held on May 29th for students to have the opportunity to say goodbye with a celebration with staff and family after school. We wish Errol all the best for his retirement from school and sincerely thank him for his outstanding service. 2 PUBLIC EDUCATION AWARDS Nominations are now open for the annual Public Education Awards. This is an opportunity for you to recognise an ancillary staff member, leader or teacher for their excellent work. Many staff go over and above in their role to support students, staff, parents and the community. Recognition through this nomination opportunity is a great way to show appreciation. Last year over 50 members received at least one nomination. It is possible to re nominate a staff member again. Please consider taking some time to register online or contact the department for more information. Details are included in this newsletter. (please see details below) NAPLAN NAPLAN tests will be conducted next week across Australia. These tests provide information for us to develop an understanding of the progress students are making in the important areas of literacy and numeracy. The results are used to examine areas of need across the year level as well as individual achievement to help target intervention or extend student development. We encourage all year 9 students to be involved so we get a good snap shot picture of where students are at. Specific information has been sent home to all year 9 students. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Jay Ferrin at the school. CO-OP CASH FOR SCHOOLS FUNDRAISER The Co-Op has invited us to join the fund raising event they conduct to support schools. Please consider adding your tokens to the high school box that is located in the shopping centre. We will be presented with vouchers each week which be used to support a range of programs for students. (please see back page for more details) ACHIEVEMENTS Congratulations to Courtney Jensen and Kyesha Christensen on being selected for the State Girls AFL team. Well done also to Shaun Hahn who recently competed in the State Triathlon Championships and to Emily Hicks who represented South Australia at the Gallipoli 100th Anniversary Commemorations in Turkey. Despite some technical hitches (and a couple of crashes!), the Pedal Prix team achieved excellent results at the Loxton event on Sunday. The senior and junior boys both finished 3rd in their category and the girls 5th. It was great to see so many parents and students working well together to set up the pits, support the team and help as officials. It promises to be a great season ahead for the team. 3 The SRC has recently been working on issues around not only our school community, but also our wider community. On Saturday 11 April we held a stall, where we sold heart shaped biscuits raising approximately $250 dollars. It was a privilege to work with the Barossa Districts Football club to raise money for the Heart Kids Foundation in memory of Ike. A further $500 was donated through the collection of money from the last Non-Uniform Day. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the landing of Australian soldiers at Gallipoli, SRC students marched at the dawn service in Nuriootpa where we also laid a wreath in honour of all of those that have served and are serving our country. It was a great honour and privilege to be a part of such an event, we encourage everyone who wishes to participate to join us next year in order to keep such an important tradition alive within the community. This term we will be looking at raising much needed money for the upgrade of school facilities. We are always interested in student and parent feedback so please alert us with your ideas either by placing a suggestion in the suggestion box (located in the library) or by talking to a member of the SRC group. If you have any outstanding Material & Services Charges please pay, or make arrangements to pay as soon as possible. Outstanding amounts will be forwarded to the Department of Education and Child Development for debt collection. If you intend to apply for School Card please do so as soon as possible forms are available on the school website. If you need any assistance with your application contact the Finance Office. Open Day is to be held Sunday, 17 May. This is the day we showcase our extensive facilities and programs including the Wine Centre, Art rooms and ICT programs. Extra-curricular activities such as the musical production, Knock-Out Cup sports and Pedal Prix are also on display. Faculty coordinators and other staff members will be available at various locations, for families to ask questions. A barbeque will be provided at 12:30pm. Tours begin in the stadium at 1:00pm, the second wave of tours at 2:00pm, followed by the information session at 3pm, also in the stadium. Please encourage prospective families to attend as we are keen to show the many displays our faculty teams have prepared and we look forward to meeting new families on the day. Tour leaders: We need students from 12:30pm to 3:00pm to be tour leaders. The students will work in pairs and show groups of people around the school. This is a good leadership opportunity so please encourage your child to see Ms Ferrin to register their interest. 5 This year Nuriootpa High School welcomes three professional trikes to three teams of Nuri High Racing. Last weekend on Sunday 3 May was the opening race to the 2015 season which was held at Lotxon on their town street circuit. 81 competitors took to the field, including our Junior and Senior boys, as well as our all girls team. The teams put great expectations on themselves, as they had been training very hard during ECA s as well as all three teams finally having professionally built race trikes with proven track records. As the start flag dropped all three teams raced continuously for a straight 6 hours. Rider change overs proved to require some refinement, and two serious crashes held up the finishing time for the senior boys trike. Luckily no serious injuries occurred to the riders, and for the first time ever in Nuriootpa High School Pedal Prix history we finished 3rd for the senior boys and 3rd for the junior boys, both categories behind Loxton High School who came 2nd and Pembroke College, who came 1st, in both categories. Our all girls team challenged themselves by fitting harder gearing to their trike for race day, sadly thus proved difficult on the steep hill of the track, however, still saw the girls team work as an efficient and effective team with rider change overs and encouragement. They finished a convincing 5th in the all-girls category. Welcome to the head of the pack Nuri High Racing the 2015 race season has lots to offer for the success of this team of amazing riders and brilliant team of students. We are always looking for any businesses who would like to support us with sponsorship, and families or students that would like to come along to race events and simply support their school and team. So come along the races are spectacular with trikes reaching up to speeds of 60 70kms p/h. Next Race is at Victoria Park in Adelaide City on 14 June 2015 from 10am when the start flag drops until 4pm when the chequered flag is waved. We would love to see you there. 6 Last term my Year 11 Creative Arts class performed their major Assessment production entitled Starstruck. This light hearted play dealt with students auditioning for a musical and who discover more about themselves than they bargained for. The class performed four shows to Nuriootpa High School students and one evening show to parents and friends. We were fortunate enough to have four students from the unit join our class last term - Jacob Young, Dale Vidler, Leighton Kerr and Ashleigh Rushton. Their contributions towards the final product were outstanding. Dale and Jacob certainly proved to be bossy directors. A big thank you must go to all the cast for their outstanding efforts towards this show. They were able to thoroughly entertain their audiences due to their supreme discipline and dedication to the production. Riley Todd must also be acknowledged for helping us with the lighting. 8 TERM 2 SPORTS Students have the opportunity to get involved in a variety of sports during this term. Below is a list of the sports that students can try out for. Open Boys and girls Basketball; Football for 8/9 and Open Boys and Girls; Hockey for Open Boys and Girls; Netball for 8/9, Year 10 and Open Girls; Soccer for 8/9 Boys and Girls, Year 10 Boys and Open Boys and Girls, 8/9 Boys and Girls 5-aside Outdoor Soccer; Open Boys and Girls Volleyball and Open Boys Touch Football. Term three and four also has more on offer so it is important that morning notices are listened to so that training and meetings are not missed. Big congratulations to the Year 8/9 Boys Cricket Team for winning the Country North Cricket Championship and the Open Boys winning their division in Beach Volleyball at Glenelg Beach in Term One. Please remember if you achieve success in a sport outside of school, please let Mr West know, so that this success can be celebrated and acknowledged. SCHOOL ATHLETICS TEAM - SANTOS Nuriootpa High competed in the Schools Athletics Championships at Santos Stadium in the B2 division on Wednesday 8 April. 63 athletes represented the school in the fourth to top competition in the state with many individual and team highlights on the day. This year the combined team came second out of eight teams. The boys finishing in an outstanding first place and the girls in sixth. These results are a reflection of the positive and reliable efforts all 63 athletes put in on the day, with only four events being missed. Thank you to staff: Ross Lambert, Richard Clarridge and Rikki Hill for your efforts and help. A special thank you to our parent helpers, Jenny Fechner and Cathy Lambert and all the students who did a great job helping on the long jump and who took photos on the day. 10 PINK STUMPS DAY On Friday of Week 8, Term 1 Nuriootpa High School held an event called Pink Stumps Day. On the day students were encouraged to wear pink,the final of the Pink Stumps Cricket competition was played and Miss O Halloran and her Food and Hospitality students organised a Pink Morning Tea for staff. All money raised on the day went to the McGrath Foundation who raise awareness and provide nursing assistance to women and their families who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. During the week, 11 teams completed on the tennis courts in a mini version of indoor cricket. On the Friday the final was played between Bailey s Bunch and Ryan s Team, with Bailey s Bunch finishing as champions. Thank you to everyone who was involved in the cricket competition and to all those who dressed in pink on the day to help raise money for a great cause. U18 YOUTH GIRLS STATE FOOTBALL TEAM Congratulations to Nuriootpa High students Courtney Jensen and Kyesha Christensen who have been selected in the 2015 South Australian U18 Youth Girls State Football Team. The National Championships will be held in Mandurah, Western Australia from 2nd - 9th May. Eight teams will contest games across two pools with WA, Vic Metro, Queensland and Vic Country contesting pool A. Pool B will see a combined Northern Territory and Tasmania team compete against NSW/ACT, South Australia and the Woomeras. Indigenous girls who do not make their State team will come together to play in the Woomeras which also entails a strong education and leadership component for girls who have limited opportunities to pursue physical activity. Games will be livestreamed at All the best Courtney and Kyesha on behalf of the entire school and community. AUSTRALIA NATIONAL TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS Congratulations to Year 12 student Shaun Hahn and his achievements in Triathlon. After placing second in the South Australian School Sport Triathlon Championships, Shaun was selected to compete for South Australia at the School Sport Australia National Triathlon Championships held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith NSW, from Monday 27 - Thursday 30 April He was also selected to be the male Captain for the South Australian team. Shaun competed both individually and as part of a team relay. In his individual event he made the "top ten", a huge achievement competing in a National Event. Shaun then competed in the Senior SA Boys Relay Team on the next day in which they placed fourth in the Senior Boys competition. Shaun was acknowledged for his commitment to school sport on the last day as having competed in five National School Sports events including 4 National Triathlons and 1 National Cross Country event. Shaun will now compete in the 2015 International Triathlon Union - World Duathlon Championship to be held in Adelaide in October and once completed his formal Year 12 studies, has plenty more in store competing in National Triathlon Championships all over Australia.
