4 K- 3 Literacy Update for Parents: Administer a universal screening for all K- 3 students three times per year. This screening is intended to identify students in need of additional literacy support and requires intervention and progress monitoring for those students. Iowa school districts must use one of the assessment tools approved by the Iowa Department of Education. The Waukee Community School District selected the FAST assessments to meet these requirements. All students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade take the areading assessment in the fall, winter, and spring. Kindergarten students take the earlyreading assessment in the fall, winter, and spring. Parents will be notified if their child needs additional support according to the FAST assessments. Waukee has a comprehensive literacy program that provides quality instruction, assessments and interventions for our students. The FAST assessments will add one additional data point to our existing program. We appreciate your support of early literacy at home as well. The attached letter is from the Director of the Iowa Department of Eduction, Dr. Brad Buck. It provides additional information related to the state law, the focus on literacy, and resources for you to utilize with your child. Athletic Booster Club Memberships Join the Waukee Athletic Booster Club (WABC)! Sign up on Rev-Trak. 7 News From Nurse Kim in The Health Office *The Health Offices at WE and the VMLC always greatly appreciate donations of kleenex, cough drops, and children's pain relievers such as Tylenol/Acetaminophen or Motrin/Ibuprofen products in liquid or chewable/dissolvable form. We can also use new or clean, gently used clothing, underwear, socks, shoes (especially athletic shoes and flip flops or slides), belts, and winter gear in good condition (coats, snow pants, boots, gloves, mittens). Thank you so much for helping provide these extras for our students to use! *FOOD ALLERGIES Severe, even life threatening, allergies are becoming more and more common in our building each year. We ask that you be very attentive and provide snacks and treats for the classroom that are nut-free, and, if your child's or children's classroom(s) have signs indicating a "NUT FREE ZONE" that you also be aware of the manufacturing process of treats that are sent to that classroom, avoiding items that are "manufactured on.", or "processed in " which could be contaminated with nut residue. There is useful snack information on my blog ( and I will soon be adding a list of metro area or local businesses that are "nut aware" and serve clients with severe allergies or other dietary restrictions while providing delicious treat options. *KINDERGARTEN parents, we request that you try to send at least one set of extra clothing to school each day in your child's backpack in case of accidents for at least the first few weeks of school. This is a big time of adjustment for most children, and sometimes they are too involved in learning and fun activities to remember to use the bathroom in time! It can be a comfort for them to be able to change into something of their own from home, rather than borrowing clothes from the nurse. Please know that we try to handle any toileting or other accident that occurs in a very calm, matter-of-fact manner, not drawing attention to it, just trying to ensure the child is cleaned up appropriately and has clean, dry clothing to wear so they can return to regular classroom activities as soon as possible.
