1 COLOURS, HONOURS, MERIT AWARDS (Revised September 2013) All the awards detailed below contribute to the promotion of an ethos of achievement in which hard work, application and excellence are recognised, valued and rewarded. Senior 5 and Senior 6 Senior and Full Colours will be awarded for: Academic Achievement The Arts Sports Community Service Criteria for the award of the above is documented below. All Colour awards will utilise white braid, the wording on the pocket indicating the discipline or disciplines for which the award has been made. Any pupil in receipt of Colours or Senior Colours is entitled to wear an Honours Tie. This will be presented to a pupil on one occasion only (to include a previous award of Junior Colours). Where a pupil is awarded Full Colours in Senior 5, they are entitled to be awarded with Full Colours (Redates) if the required standard is again reached in Senior 6. Colours Cards, indicating the nature of the awards, and signed by the Rector and Deputy Rector will be presented at a School Assembly. In addition, Captains and Vice Captains of School will wear full braid, standard school pocket badge plus appropriate lapel badge. Senior 4 Junior Colours will be awarded for: Academic Achievement The Arts Sports Criteria for the award of the above is documented below. The Junior Colours award will take the form of a blue lapel badge embossed with the words Junior Colours. Any pupil in receipt of Junior Colours is entitled to wear an Honours Tie. This will be presented to a pupil on one occasion only. Colours Cards, indicating the nature of the awards, and signed by the Rector and Deputy Rector will be presented at a School Assembly.

2 Senior 4/5/6 : Honours Ties Honours ties may be awarded for a significant achievement by an individual either within or outwith school. There are no categories laid down: each proposal will be considered on its own merits. Note that CCF Senior Ranks are entitled to an Honours Tie. Honours Ties Cards, indicating the nature of the awards, and signed by the Rector and Deputy Rector will be presented at a School Assembly. Senior Prep to Senior 3 Merit Badges for The Arts and Sport are awarded to pupils for honest endeavour, commitment and sustained application. Their award, and the specific timing of the award being made is entirely at the discretion of the member of staff in charge of the specific activity. The Arts and Sports Merit Badges will be a simple lapel badge, colour coded for each year group as follows: Senior Prep White, Senior 1 Yellow, Senior 2 Red, Senior 3 Green. Note that only one of each type of badge (The Arts or Sport) will be presented, even if a pupil is nominated for a badge in different disciplines. Timings In advance of the session: Captains and Vice Captains The Award of Colours and Merit Badges will be made in August, December, March and June. Academic Colours, Senior Colours and Junior Colours Awards Academic Full Colours will be awarded at the beginning of the Senior 6 Year to pupils who, in Senior 5, achieved 5 Highers, with at least 4 at Grade A. Academic Senior Colours will be awarded at the beginning of the Senior 6 Year to pupils who, in Senior 5, achieved 5 Highers, with 3 at Grade A. Academic Junior Colours will be awarded at the beginning of the Senior 5 Year to pupils who, in Senior 4, achieved 7 As at Intermediate 2 or the equivalent. It is recognised that pupils may for genuine reasons pursue a programme of study that does not match the exact criteria outlined above. In such cases, the Rector may award Academic Colours in order to recognise hard work, application and excellence.

3 Expressive Arts Faculty Colours, Senior Colours and Junior Colours Awards The Faculty Head of Expressive Arts, in consultation with staff where appropriate, will award Colours in Music and Drama as follows: Music Grade 4 Associated Board level on an instrument signed by an instrumental teacher. Criteria will include a musicality grading (tuning, phrasing, attention to detail etc) Attendance at either orchestra or choir for the period of one year signed by the teacher responsible (this will include regular participation/attendance, a positive attitude and being available to play for concerts when asked) Preferred attendance at a minimum of one orchestral/choir course outwith school over the course of the year confirmed by Head of Faculty Grade 6 Associated Board level on an instrument. Certificate must be produced. Attendance at either orchestra or choir for the period of one year signed by the teacher responsible (this will include regular participation/attendance, a positive attitude and being available to play for concerts when asked) Attendance at a minimum of two orchestral/choir courses outwith school over the course of the year confirmed by Head of Faculty Grade 7 Associated Board level. Certificate must be produced. Attendance at either orchestra or choir for the period of one year signed by the teacher responsible (this will include regular participation/attendance, a positive attitude and being available to play for concerts when asked) Attendance at a minimum of two orchestral/choir courses outwith school over the course of the year confirmed by Head of Faculty Drama Dedicated attendance at play/show rehearsals, resulting in progress in a designated area: ie sound engineering, props, acting, dance/lighting etc. Preferred attendance at a minimum of one drama related course/event other than the school show, either within or outwith school over the course of the year. Dedicated commitment to a team and collaboration in the school show or another event resulting in excellence in a designated area: ie sound engineering, props, acting, dance/lighting etc Attendance at a minimum of one drama related course/event outwith school over the course of the year.

Expressive Arts Notes Pupils in S4 may be awarded Senior or Full Colours for performance in national orchestras or choirs. In Senior 6, Colours may be awarded for long service to the choir, orchestra or drama or a general commitment to the Performing Arts in general. Displays of leadership may also lead to the awarding of Colours in a pupil s Senior 6 year. Pupils may not be awarded full colours for drama on one show. Colours are intended as a build-up of expertise as well as participation in the community of the school. Honours Ties may be awarded for an outstanding performance that falls short of the stated criteria. Pupils who have consistently performed in plays/shows but have only had small parts will be eligible for awards in Senior 6. Games, PE, Games, Outdoor Education Faculty Colours, Senior Colours and Junior Colours Awards The Faculty Head of Games, PE and Outdoor Education, in consultation with staff where appropriate, will award Colours in Sport as follows: Rugby Recognition of performance, attitude and commitment in School Rugby. In S4, recognition of performance at District/Regional level. Recognition of performance and attitude playing for the 1 st XV For S6, recognition of service to School Rugby including representing the 1 st XV Performing to a consistently high standard and playing a minimum of 1 full season in the 1 st XV Represented the School at District and/or National Level Hockey Recognition of performance, attitude and commitment in School Hockey.

5 In S4, recognition of performance at District/Regional level Recognition of performance and attitude playing for the 1 st XV Recognition of service to School Hockey including representing the 1 st XI/2 nd XI (2 nd XI pupils only eligible in Senior 6 Performing to a consistently high standard and playing 1 full season in the 1 st XI Represented the School at District and/or National Level Cricket Recognition of performance, attitude and commitment in School Cricket. For Senior 6 pupils: recognition of service to School Cricket and representing the 1 st XI For Senior 5 pupils: recognition of performance and attitude playing for the 1 st XV over 2 seasons Performing to a consistently high standard and playing a minimum of 2 full seasons in the 1 st XI Athletics (including Cross Country) Recognition of performance, attitude and commitment in School Athletics. For Senior 6 pupils: recognition of service to School Athletics (Independent Leagues, Glasgow Schools, Scottish Schools) For Senior 5 pupils: recognition of performance and attitude to School Athletics (Independent Leagues, Glasgow Schools, Scottish Schools) Performing to a consistently high standard and representing the school with success at Glasgow Schools and Scottish Schools and any other major events. Shooting Recognition of performance, attitude and commitment in School Target Rifle Shooting on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Match Participation: completion of one Winter League programme, as an individual and in a team of three, with personal performance of note.

6 Recognition of performance and attitude in representing the School in external Target Shooting Competitions, including Smallbore Open Meetings at senior level. For S6, recognition of service to School Target Rifle Shooting. Shooting at a consistently high standard and, available only for award to members of the nominated Eight, Represented the School in County and/or National Events Demonstrating an excellent attitude and commitment to Target Rifle Shooting Curling Recognition of performance, attitude and commitment in School Curling. Must be RCCC registered. Pupils should be attending training with other clubs. Recognition of performance and attitude in playing for the A and B teams in U16 and U21 matches at various rinks in the West of Scotland. For S6, recognition of service to School Curling including representing the A team. Performing to a consistently high standard and playing a minimum of 1 full season in the A Team. Demonstrating an excellent attitude and commitment to Curling. Representing the School in other rink, County and National Teams at U16 and U21 matches at various rinks in the West of Scotland. Rowing Recognition of performance, attitude and commitment in School Rowing. Recognition of performance and attitude in representing the school in the Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships, Heads of the River Race, Scottish Rowing Championships For S6, recognition of service to School Rowing Performing to a consistently high standard and rowing for a minimum of 1 full season in the School Boats in the events as listed above Represented the School at District and/or National/UK Level

7 Other School Sports eg Kayaking, Climbing, Tennis, Squash, Football, Badminton, Basketball, Golf, Sailing, Swimming, Equestrianism. Aikido... Each sport will be considered on its own merits. However, if a pupil achieves National Representation in a School Sport then Full Colours can be awarded to S5/6 pupils. Non-School Sports eg Snowboarding, Netball For S4 pupils and above: for a sport for which a pupil receives international recognition, then an Honours Tie may be awarded. Community Service Colours Recognition of commitment and attitude to at least one Kelvinside Academy Outreach Project which involves serving the local community in a pupil s own time. Recognition of commitment in offering a service (such as working with pupils via SFL, assisting with Games, assisting in the running of the Student Council, working in the Charities Committee) to the school community over a period of two terms. Awarded to S6 only. Recognition of commitment and attitude to more than one Kelvinside Academy Outreach Project which involves serving the local community in a pupil s own time. Recognition of commitment in offering a service (such as working with pupils via SFL, assisting with Games, running the Student Council, leading the Charities Committee) to the school community over a period of two terms. Awarded to S6 only.
