1 Cedar Ridge Middle School October 2015 Volume 2, Issue 2 A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL JOHNSTON Dear CRMS Families, This year is rolling by so quickly! It continues to be a pleasure working with all of the amazing students and staff that we are so fortunate to have at CRMS. We really do ROCK! At this time, you should have received an individual report in the mail detailing your student's statewide assessment results from last year. As a school, we are using our results as a baseline to build from as we continue to develop and implement curriculum that helps each student demonstrate growth. Cedar Ridge students and staff are all working hard to continue to meet the academic and social needs of all students. Our primary goal is to prepare all Cedar Ridge students for the rigors and challenges of high school and beyond. If you have any questions regarding the assessment results as they pertain to your child, please do not hesitate to contact us. Looking forward this month, we have a few exciting events coming up. One of which is the 2015 Zombie Run. This year Cedar Ridge PTC has partnered with the Sandy High School Parent group to put on the community-wide event as a fundraiser. Please consider participating as a Zombie or as a Human Runner. The cost is only $25 and proceeds come right back to CRMS and SHS students. Not to mention, it is a really fun event. You can sign up online (just check our website for details), at Mt Hood Athletic Club, or with Mrs. Johnston at CRMS. We hope to see a lot of the Cedar Ridge community! Help us continue to build the Storm Pride! Please to encourage your student to show their pride and school spirit by wearing school colors or Cedar Ridge Spirit gear to school each Friday. New spirit gear has been ordered and can be purchased in the student store or by coming to see me in the office. We will also be starting an online store for students and families to place orders from the convenience of your own home. More to come on this soon. Don t forget to look over the upcoming events and mark your calendars! Warm regards, Nicole Johnston, Principal CRMS Students: Wear PINK on October 14th to show your support. 2 UPCOMING BAND AND CHOIR CONCERT Come enjoy the music! The Cedar Ridge Band and Choir programs will be sharing some wonderful music on Thursday, October 15th from 7:00-8:00pm in the Cedar Ridge gymnasium. The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character that is the one goal of true education. - Martin Luther King, Jr. WHAT PARENTS AND STUDENTS ARE SAYING ABOUT CRMS: I really appreciate the amount of communication that is going back and forth between teachers, administration, and parents. It makes it really clear to determine how kids are doing in their classes, what their homework is, and what they have missing. - CRMS Parent Cedar Ridge is a comfortable, happy place and kids are always having fun. All staff are like family to me. They make learning enjoyable. - CRMS 8th Grader As a parent, I appreciate the efforts being made to keep our kids engaged and looking forward to the future! Our teachers are making education fun again and that speaks volumes to our kids! - CRMS Parent ***Student and parent names have been removed for privacy. 2 A NOTE FROM MRS. CURRY - SCHOOL COUNSELOR Small counseling groups are open to all students at Cedar Ridge. Groups are led by Mrs. Curry, the counselor, and meet once a week, usually during lunch time for about 8-10 weeks. There are a variety of groups that Mrs. Curry has available for students to participate in. Please review the list below and let us know if your child may benefit from a small group counseling opportunity. Friendship: Provides opportunities for students to meet peers and practice friendship skills in a group setting. Social Skills: Teaches students skills for appropriately dealing with everyday social situations through role plays and discussions. Coping with Stress: Discusses the role of stress in life, the difference between healthy and unhealthy stress, and explores many different coping mechanisms for dealing with stress. Divorce/Family Changes: Allows students a safe place to cope with the stress of divorce. Students are taught coping skills and are able to process thoughts with other students dealing with similar issues. Grief/Loss: Provides a support system for students who have experienced the death of a family member. Teaches students coping skills for dealing with loss. Study Skills: Teaches students organization skills, test taking skills and allows students a place to complete homework. Conflict/Anger Management: Teaches conflict management skills through role plays with feedback and discussions. We also discuss how to control and manage anger in a positive way. Girls Group: Girls group focuses on issues that greatly impact middle school girls. We discuss self esteem, body image, building healthy relationships, and dealing with everyday stressors related to friends, family, and school. If you are interested in having your student participate in a group, please contact Mrs. Curry by phone, , or , becky.curry@ortrail.k12.or.us.

3 NEW SCHOOL IMMUNIZATION LAW Oregon law changed this year to remove old religious exemptions. If you have filed a religious exemption with your school, we will need new information about immunizations for your child. Please turn in the information by December, or your child may be excluded from school this winter. What did Senate Bill 895 change about religious exemptions to immunization? Old religious exemptions to immunization signed before March 1, 2014, are no longer accepted. If your child has an old religious exemption, you will need to complete new documentation of immunizations, a medical exemption, or a nonmedical exemption. What are the options for parents of children with old religious exemptions? If your child has received the vaccines, write the dates on a Certificate of Immunization Status form and turn in the form to your child s school or child care. If you want a nonmedical exemption for your child, complete the new process and turn in two forms: 1. Certificate of Immunization Status fill in the dates of any vaccines your child has received, fill out the nonmedical exemption section by marking the vaccines for which you want the exemption, and then sign and date the exemption. 2. Vaccine Education Certificate you will get this certificate after completing the required education about immunizations from a health care practitioner or from the online vaccine education module. Go to for more information about nonmedical exemptions. If you need a medical exemption for your child, get a letter from your child s physician with the information stated on the Certificate of Immunization Status form. Turn in the letter to your child s school or child care. Medical exemptions are reviewed and approved by the health department. When is the new documentation due? Turn in the documentation of immunizations or exemption by December. If you don t get the information in by December, you may receive a notice this winter stating that your child will be excluded from school or child care because of missing immunization records. GET CONNECTED! We are working hard to make sure families know what is happening around CRMS. Here are some of the ways we communicate with our families: Friday Family Updates - Each Friday we will post updates on the website, through , and on our social media sites. Ongoing Website Updates - please regularly check the website and CRMS calendar to be up-to-date on what is happening around the school environment. ParentVue - This provides families with instant access to all of your child s grades. Check this often for missing assignments and academic progress. s through School Connects - Please help us with this by providing a current address. Facebook - Check out our Facebook page for pictures, videos, and posts at cedarridgemiddleschool Twitter - Go find Monthly Newsletters - to be sent out and posted the first week of each month. Please know that we try to post information online to minimize the impact on the environment. If you need hard copies of information sent home, simply stop by the office. 3
