1 Whitsunday Christian College Whitsunday Christian College is an Independent, Co-educational College which exists to give children and young people a rich and satisfying life full of promise, purpose and hope. In doing so, we strive to shape young men and women of character who are eager to live an adventurous life as they meet life's challenges using their God given gifts and talents to lead and serve others in truth and grace. Our College is a vibrant and happy place to be. We do this by: achieving high academic and social standards, providing quality independent schooling within a Christian atmosphere of love, respect, peace and discipline, establishing positive teacher-student working relationships, valuing student ability and personal effort Male Female Indigenous SWD Total Year Levels Offered: Prep 12 (425 currently in 2012)
2 Curriculum Offerings At Whitsunday our desire is to meet the learning needs and interests of children and young people as they move through the phases of schooling. In 2011 Junior School students have engaged enthusiastically in literacy and numeracy through our Letterland phonics program, Sails reading program, and Mathletics numeracy program. Middle School students have participated in the following electives: Web Design and Animation, Fishing and Marine Studies, Mechanical Trades, Drama, Visual Art, Food Technology, Woodwork and Dance. Students also participated in the camping program. The Senior students also packed in a whole range of extra-curricular activities on top of the normal coursework. These included: the Will and Whimsy Drama production, a Senior Art Exhibition, reef trips for the Science students, a trip to Canberra and the snowfields, a Drama excursion to see The Secret Garden, an overnight leadership camp, a Dream Job workshop for the Year 10s, and presentations specifically for the Year 12s put on by the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service and Queensland Police saw the largest and most successful cross country and athletics teams in the College s short history represented at district trials. In Term 3 there was an interschool gala day for year 6/7 students participating in netball and touch against other local schools. In timetabled sport, Middle School students participated in a number of mainstream sports suited to the schools facilities and the seasonal conditions of the Whitsundays. Senior School sport saw students participate in recreational and fitness activities off campus in the wider community. On top of all of this, students also had the opportunity to individually trial in a number of sports for district, regional and state representation with a number of students recognised for their achievements in attending state trials.
3 Buildings More work has been completed on the College Hall, including carpet and stage. Smaller upgrades and improvements were achieved in 2011 to further cater for the increased number of students in the College. Enrolments Enrolments remained at around 410 for the year. There are two streams from Prep to Year 3 and a consolidation of students for the rest of the College. Social Climate of the College The College continues to offer a positive and safe environment for all students. Pastoral care is an integral part of the College and this is provided by teachers, chaplain and welfare officer. There is a growing College spirit with positive interactions between students and staff. This has seen students contributing to the life of the College. Parental Involvement: In 2011 there was a high level of parent volunteers and they were an integral part of the College. Parents attend class assemblies, help in classrooms, sit on uniform committees, support sports events and generally work in partnership with the College to achieve the best opportunities for their children.
4 Achievements 2011 was another successful year for Year 12 students at the College. Thirteen students were awarded a Senior Statement and one student awarded a Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement. Seven students received an OP which was a fantastic result for the College. Whitsunday community members were entertained with the musical production of The Tale of Two Princesses by the children of Whitsunday Christian College. With over 250 cast members and a complete production team led by Paul and Mel Saunders, the storyline explored the fair use of water. Children performed many popular songs as they danced their way to a climatic number that included all cast members celebrating the water flowing again. The musical was a spectacular success thanks to the hard work of students, staff, volunteers, and parents coming together to finish 2011 so well. Summary There has been much change and advancement at Whitsunday Christian College in The College was blessed to enjoy another successful year.
