1 Issue 4 - Term Cudgee Primary School Community Newsletter Welcome to the 4 th edition of the Cudgee Update Cudgee Primary School s community newsletter. The last term of the year has really flown by! It has been good to reflect on the comings and goings at the school in Term 4 and share some of the highlights with you including Grade 2 camp, F-2 excursion to Fairy Park, The Night Market, Clubs and transition sessions, 3-6 triathlon day, Cudgee Creek water quality excursion and much more. We wish you all a safe and restful break this Christmas! Quick Survey This community newsletter began back in Term 1 this year and we would love your feedback. It only takes 3 minutes and you can opt to go into the draw to win a copy of the School s History: 105 at 150! Please use the link: Walktober During October the school participated in Walktober which aimed to encourage walking and riding to school. All students participated with most being able to do this almost every day! The new footpath from the bridge to the school tennis court was installed during this month very timely! We held a celebratory breakfast to mark everyone s achievement. All students participated so well that they all went into the draw to win a $500 bike voucher congratulations Courtney. Thanks to the Moyne Shire for running this program. Some great healthy and active habits are being formed by students. School Grounds It s been great to see members of the community making use of the court and oval for different recreational purposes. We have recently put up the tennis net on the court for those who get inspired by the Australian Open this summer. This term we have also completed some school ground projects: 150th Anniversary Pavers Laid! Thanks go to the organising committee who spent time organising this project and Glynn Coulson who has recently laid the School s150 th Anniversary Pavers.

2 The pavers feature hand drawn designs from the students of 2014 and the names and details of past and present families and students who purchased their own pavers. It has been organised in chronological order and is located on the north side of the historic school building. We have also extended the oval and added crushed rock in the garden bed to bring that area in line with the CFA fire safety recommendations. Feel free to visit over the holidays and take a look. We would like to thank parents who helped sand and paint the timber and James Cronin who volunteered his time to repair and straighten the timberwork we couldn t have finished this project without you. We look forward to the bike shed inspiring the next 50 years of students to ride to school! Please remember all Warrnambool bound bus travellers are welcome to use the school bike shed to store their bike when catching the bus. Cudgee Night Market Thanks to everyone who came and contributed to the success of the annual Night Market. Bike Shed Restoration Complete We were successful in receiving a Ride2School Award of $2500 that went toward renovating the old bike shed that is at least 50 years old. After initial quotes came in we applied for a $5000 award and had to modify our plans to fit within the budget. This year was the 5 th time the market was held and it is becoming a great community event for the school and Cudgee that also helps raise money to support the educational outcomes and learning experiences of Cudgee students.

3 Cudgee Creek River Survey In November the F-6 students were fortunate to work with 2 Water Watch scientists at the Cudgee Creek under the Dwarroon Road bridge. We used a range of instruments to test the water and then identified and counted different species of fish and water creatures to find out how healthy our creek is. We were all blown away by the diversity and number of different animals that we found. In nets set up the evening before, we caught 2 eels, some black fish (along with other species), freshwater shrimp and many other small insects and bugs. All creatures were released back to the creek. We re pleased to report that the creek is in very good condition! Grade 4/5/6 highlight GRADE 3-6 Highlights After reflecting back on the term the students have decided the highlights for them were competing in the Australian Schools Triathlon and for some of the Grade 6 students it was attending Warrnambool College on their transition days. Triathlon The Triathlon was our highlight of the fourth term - our experience there was exceptional. The swimming was ice-cold, the biking was exhausting and the running was just deathly but all in all it was a fun experience. - Molly Morrice and Patrick Hewson On the 20 th of November I went to a triathlon with my class and came 12th out of about 100! It was great fun. I really want to do it again. - Harry Dodson Year 7 Transition On Monday and Tuesday I attended the transition days at Warrnambool College. I loved it but it is always good to come back to Cudgee Primary School. -Madison Hunt My transition to high school was the best 2 days of my life. Meeting new friends playing new games it was all very exciting. - Kalin Jans FIRE SAFETY PLEASE BE AWARE THAT ON CODE RED DAYS THE SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED AND NO STAFF OR STUDENTS WILL ON THE PREMISES.

4 2015 School Concert It was great to see so many people at the end of year concert. The concert began with Adeline McDonald s Welcome to Country and the children performing a dance telling the story of the Eel Dreaming. The children then sang songs they had been learning in music lessons, presented plays by the F-2 & 3-6 classes and gave individual instrumental performances. We farewelled our Grade 6 students and their families: the Lenehans, Jans, Hunts and Peveretts, who have been apart of the school community for many years and contributed so much in their time here. Awards 2016 This year s Lions Endeavour Award of $70 was awarded to Kalin Jans. We are also pleased to announce a new annual award: The Mary McKinnon (Nee Meade) Endeavour Award (see box below for more about Mary.) The annual award of $250 per person is given to 2 students who have shown friendship, compassion and decency toward others and demonstrated a commitment to learning and our school community through: o their effort and perseverance o being active participants in their own learning o setting goals for their lives and striving to achieve them. This year we would like to congratulate Sophie Lenehan and Kira Garth on winning this award. Mary McKinnon (nee Meade) Mary McKinnon (nee Meade) was born in August Mary attended the Cudgee school with her brothers and sisters from the 1920s. Mary spoke fondly of the Cudgee school and her time there. She often talked about the other families who attended with her such as the Brosnans, Brocks, Hunts, and Mahoneys. The family still has Mary s Merit Certificate, which she received from the school in Mary married Bill McKinnon from Garvoc and they reared their 7 children at Purnim. On the centenary of the Cudgee school Mary took all the family to the celebrations. She always enjoyed catching up with the Cudgee community. This award which is to honour Mary s memory and her love of Cudgee and the Cudgee creek where she learned to swim. It is fitting that this award is to be called an endeavour award because Mary recognised and rewarded those who tried hard and got the most out of themselves - not just academically. Mary left us in her 94 th year in November, Michael McKinnon

5 We are so pleased to receive such a special award, we are very grateful and feel very privileged. The award will go towards our education for our future. We would like to acknowledge Miss Selway, Mr Dodson, Mrs Moir, Mrs Howlett and Mr Arnott for selecting us for this award. We couldn t ask for much more in life, we are so glad as now we look back on our lives and realise all that maths, literacy, science, sport, music, art, library it all pays off in the end! 6 F-2 Highlights During Term 4 the F-2 school camp program got underway. The Grade 2s from Cudgee, Nullawarre and Panmure Primary schools went to Port Fairy for their 2 day camp. Woo Hoo! I love the beach and I think this was one of the best days of my life!! - Grace On Grade 2 camp I went to the beach. I found some seaweed that was shaped like a moose s horn. - Jaya I loved Grade 2 camp. It was amazing. - Courtney The F-2s went on an extended excursion to Fairy Park with Nullawarre PS. This was the first time I was in the forest and I ve got Fairy Park armour on. Luke My favourite was Mr Issa the knight. Issa We got to climb castles. Nyk We went to Fairy Park it was a long drive. There were nursery rhymes and it was amazing. Audrey On Friday I went to Fairy Park and there was a play ground and it was fun. Marli This term we went to an exciting excursion to Fairy Park! We had a lot of fun in the castle (playground!) Lucy There was an excellent playground at Fairy Park. It was fun you would like it there. Mairead This was the first time I wore knight s armour from Fairy Park.
