6 Welcome Neurocritical Care is an exciting, young field of medicine which has now gone through several decades of rapid evolution. Modern neuro-intensive care units (Neuro-ICU) now feature the most advanced medical devices and equipment including the cutting-edge multimodality neuro-monitoring along with capability to obtain neuroimages without even leaving the unit. There has been an emphasis on the importance of full time, dedicated staffing with neuro-intensivists and specially trained critical care nurses. Neuro-ICU is not just for the neurology and neurosurgery issues. Patients often have multi-organ failure, and as such successful resuscitation is not only geared towards the injured brain but also for the rest of the body and all other end organ systems. Brain injured patients are at high risk of aspiration and ventilator associated pneumonia proficiency in airway management skills are critical. ARDS and other refractory cardiopulmonary conditions are not uncommon. All different states of shock can occur requiring multiple vasoactive pharmacologic agents and occasionally even the need for ECMO and aortic balloon counterpulsation. A modern Neuro-ICU has become diagnostically and therapeutically a challenging place for clinicians. Our conference is launched with all of these concerns in mind. We welcome you to join us and interact with the nationally and internationally renowned speakers, get on the stage to win prizes at the who wants to be a real neuro-intensivist? - a medical jeopardy-like quiz contest, and obtain valuable skills from the hands on simulation workshop. Each day, the program is full of dynamic speakers and plenty of audience involvement. Welcome to Houston and join us in celebrating our first annual meeting with the theme we can all be proud of: Saving lives beyond expectation. Kiwon Lee, MD, FACP, FAHA, FCCM Course Director, The Neuro-ICU Symposium Associate Professor and Vice Chairman of Neurology for Clinical Affairs Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery Co-Director of Neuroscience and Neurotrauma-ICU The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Mischer Neuroscience Institute Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center
