Intended for healthcare providers including nurses, social workers, vocational specialists, counselors, administrators, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, psychologists, case managers, other allied professionals, community living specialists, and all direct care staff. OBJECTIVES: Demonstrate an understanding of patient-centered care from the perspective of a brain injury service provider who then experienced a TBI. Identify techniques to combine evidence-based practice and techniques to yield the most effective level of effort from a brain injury survivor. Demonstrate an understanding of an evidence based methodology for evaluating new technology and how it relates to FDA approval. Understand the relationship between research studies for brain and human behavior and be aware of current research studies and collaborations. Describe a general process of evaluating persons with suspected ongoing MTBI and the rehabilitation treatment team approach. Identify considerations in the process of treatment planning for rehabilitative services and program needs for persons with cognitive limitations. Identify key elements of an accountable and quality organization and steps to improve their journey toward excellence. Identify criteria for qualifying a client for a Miller Trust or a Special Needs Trust, as well as the key elements the trust instruments must contain. Describe the role of an interdisciplinary team in developing and implementing functional goals.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dr. Gary Ulicny, president and CEO of Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA, has been involved in medical administration for over 30 years. He received his Ph.D. in behavioral psychology from the University of Kansas in He is published extensively in the area of rehabilitation and has held adjunct appointments in the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and in the Department of Human Development at the University of Kansas. Dr. Ulicny received the Atlanta Business Chronicle s Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions to healthcare and was elected as a Fellow of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr. Ulicny is a member of numerous professional organizations, served on the national board of the Head Injury Foundation and as the President of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. CEUs: Nurses: This program has been approved by the Des Moines Area Community College, Iowa Board of Nursing #22, for approval of 7.8 contact hours. Case Managers: This program has been pre-approved by The Commission for Case Manager Certification to provide continuing education credit to CCM board certified case managers. 4 SPEAKER BIO S Dave Anders, MS, CCC-SLP, CBIS, Director of Therapy, On With Life - Dave received his bachelor s in communication disorders and his master s in speech-language pathology from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He has more than 18 years of experience as a speech pathologist and has worked at On With Life for 11 years, the past three as therapy manager. Ross Barnett, Abendroth and Russell Law Firm - Ross is a shareholder with the Des Moines professional corporation of Abendroth and Russell Law Firm. He received his B.A. degree from Grinnell College in 1992 and his J.D. degree, with honors, from Drake University in Ross is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association (Real Estate and Title Examination Section and Probate Section). He is the author of numerous legal handbooks and is a frequent speaker for Continuing Legal Education classes and other seminars. Gina Beecher, DPT, CBIS, Physical Therapist, On With Life - Gina received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Iowa in After working in acute neurological rehabilitation at New York University, she returned to Iowa and began practicing at On With Life in Ankeny. Today, she is an outpatient therapist at OWL and is certified in the Neuro-IFRAH treatment approach. David Demarest, Ph.D., Neuropsychologist, On With Life - Dr. Demarest is an Iowa- and Nebraska-licensed psychologist with more than 25 years of extensive experience in the rehabilitation and neuropsychology field. He completed his doctoral degree from West Virginia University and completed a specialty post-doctoral fellowship in neuropsychology and rehabilitation at the University of Missouri Medical School and Rusk Rehabilitation Center. Michael Gerald, MS, CRC, University of Iowa - Michael Gerald is a fourth-year Doctoral student in the Rehabilitation Counselor Education (RCE) program at the University of Iowa. Michael has served as a Graduate and Research Assistant with the Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Ethics (I-DARE) for two years. Professionally Michael is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) and is currently engaged in a clinical internship with the Department of Correctional Services (DCS). Courtney Huber, MS, CCC-SLP, CBIS, Speech Pathologist, On With Life - Courtney is a speech-language pathologist at On With Life Outpatient Neurorehabilitation in Ankeny. After completing her master s degree in Speech Pathology from Purdue University in 2005, she spent one year in pediatrics and has worked in the field of acquired brain injury for nearly seven years in both long-term skilled and outpatient levels of care. Megan Ihrke, MA, CCC-SLP, CBIS, Speech Pathologist, On With Life Megan received her bachelor s in speech pathology and audiology in 2008 and completed her master s in speech pathology in 2010, both from the University of Iowa. She s been a speech pathologist at On With Life for five years. Mike Lewis, MA, CLWI, CBIS, Peer Mentor, On With Life - Mike has been working in the field of brain injury for 14 years. He currently holds the position of Peer Mentor at On With Life. Mike is a member of the BIA-IA board of directors and has channeled his own brain injury experience into a relentless advocacy for the preservation of dignity in the survivors and families with whom he interacts.
5 SPEAKER BIO S Christine MacDonell, FACRM, Managing Director of the Medical Rehabilitation and International Aging Services/Medical Rehabilitation, CARF International - Chris began her varied career in the health care industry as an occupational therapist after graduating from the University of Southern California. While in California, she became an administrator of a full rehabilitation continuum of care. Chris came to CARF in 1991 and is a Fellow of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. Tammy Miller, COTA/L, BS, CBIS, CCM, Outpatient Therapy Manager, On With Life - Tammy has worked at On With Life for ten years and is entering her 17th year as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant. While at On With Life Tammy has had the opportunity to work in the inpatient rehabilitation program as a certified occupational therapy assistant, in the case management department as the admission coordinator and is currently heading the outpatient program as the outpatient office manager. She has additional certifications as a Certified Brain Injury Specialist and Certified Case Manager. Dennis Molfese, Ph.D., Director, CB3 - Dennis is an internationally recognized expert on the use of brain recording techniques to study the emerging relationships between brain development, language and cognitive processes. He received his Ph.D. in Psychology from the Pennsylvania State University. He is the Mildred Francis Thompson Professor of Psychology, Director of the Brain Imaging Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Director of the Developmental Neuroscience Laboratory there. He is the Editor-in-Chief for the scientific journal, Developmental Neuropsychology, and serves on the editorial boards for the Annals of Dyslexia, and for Eye and Brain. Charlotte Sucik, Abendroth and Russell Law Firm - Charlotte recently joined the Abendroth and Russell Law Firm, where she practices primarily in the areas of estate planning, probate, and real estate transactions. Charlotte graduated from Webster University with a B.A. in 2006 and her law degree from Drake Law School in She participated heavily in moot court and oral advocacy activities, including as a member of her moot court team. She comes to Abendroth and Russell from general practice where she focused primarily on family law and criminal defense. Charlotte is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association. Vilia M. Tarvydas, Ph.D., LMHC, CRC - Vilia is a Professor of Rehabilitation and Counselor Education at The University of Iowa and Director of the Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Ethics (I-DARE). Vilia has previously served as President of the National Council on Rehabilitation Education, the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association, and the American Association of State Counseling Boards. In that latter capacity she was a member of the ACA/AASCB 20/20 Initiative Oversight Committee and developed the Delphi methodology that has guided that process in recent years. Vilia has published and presented extensively on ethics, ethical decision-making, and professional governance and standards. Jeanie Thomas, Family Member of Person Served - In April 2014, at the age of 21, Jeanie s daughter Genevieve was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, ventriculitis, and septic cavernous sinus thrombosis. The doctors said she had a 30% chance of survival. After 7 weeks in the neuro critical care unit of Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ, she was deemed stable enough to medevac by air ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. In June Genevieve was admitted to On With Life, where she resided for 10 months. On April 3, 2015 she discharged to live at home with her parents. Genevieve continues outpatient therapy 3 days a week at On With Life.
