2 SYMPOSIUM DESCRIPTION This conference will enable trauma clinicians to update their knowledge of current evidence based practices related to a wide variety of commonly occurring emergency conditions. In addition to prehospital resuscitation, expert faculty will present treatment strategies for pediatric patients with non-accidental trauma, and care of the mother and fetus when the trauma patient is pregnant. Special considerations for care of patients with traumatic brain injury, orthopedic injuries, conditions requiring plastic surgery and recovery from venomous snake bites will also be included. The program will conclude with an interactive panel of experts discussing special cases and responding to questions from the audience. TARGET AUDIENCE The target audience includes the various disciplines needed to provide optimal care to the injured patient, including nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency physicians and surgeons, pre-hospital care providers, respiratory care practitioners, radiology technicians and other interested health care professionals. OBJECTIVES Damage Control Resuscitation Review the trauma triad of death Describe incorporation of MARCH and HITMAN assessment into pre-hospital trauma care Identify the physiologic findings of hemorrhagic shock Discuss the management of fundamental hemorrhage control techniques The Faces of Non-Accidental Trauma Identify the patterns of physical abuse Describe the appropriate work-up to identify non-accidental trauma injuries Define how to report suspected non-accidental trauma Management of the Injured Gravid Patient Explore the incidence and impact of trauma to maternal-fetal morbidity and mortality Describe the physiological and anatomical changes in pregnancy Analyze how pregnancy changes the pattern and physiologic response to traumatic injury Identify the clinical issues and management priorities in caring for the injured obstetric patient Special Considerations in Trauma Care: Orthopedics and Plastics Identify special considerations and management strategies in the care of trauma patients with orthopedic injuries Describe interventional plastics treatment of trauma patients Treating Snakebites in California, Australia, Africa, and North Carolina: From Venom ER to Venom Death Zones to Copperhead Country Characterize the medically important reptiles and arthropods involved in envenomation Describe the medical consequences of envenomation Review the principles and practice of antivenom use Pre-hospital and Emergency Management of Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Identify frequent causes of traumatic brain and spinal cord injury Describe pre-hospital and emergency management of traumatic brain and spinal cord injury Panel of Experts Analyze approaches to the care of specific trauma cases
