1 WAKE UP YOUR BRAINS It s time to have some fun! We have put together some great ways to have fun working with math, reviewing math skills, and exploring math in the world all around you! OUR goal is for YOUR child to have fun thinking and communicating mathematical ideas, while reviewing skills and keeping the brain awake!! This packet consists of: 2 calendar pages of math activities (July and August) Greg Tang s Summer Math Challenge information letter and game board (an online program you can access and enroll your child in, if you would like) Try to spend minutes integrating math activities each day by completing these activities, practicing math facts, math apps, or other activities you and your child enjoy.! These activities are completely optional, but we encourage your child to complete at least 20 boxes each month on the calendar. They can be completed in any order, on any day.! While working on the problems, ask your child how and why. Ask them, How would you solve it? Why would you solve it that way? In order for children to understand formulas and algorithms, they must first discover why they work, use numbers and words that make sense to them, and be able to explain their thinking.! When your child finishes an activity, initial the box, and have your child color in the box.! When the calendar activities are completed, if your child returns the calendar to the Math Lab in August, your child will be recognized at a school-wide celebration and their name will be entered into a raffle for a prize for your child s classroom.! Visit our JJIS Math Lab website for additional copies or ideas for other math activities to help your child. It will link you to helpful videos, parent guides for our math program, and offer suggested websites, apps, and family games that will help students recognize patterns, build strategies, and increase their overall problem solving skills.! 2 Sunday Monday Tuesday WAKE UP YOUR BRAINS Greg Tang s Summer Math Challenge: JJIS Math Lab: Wednesday 1 Measure your height in inches and feet at the beginning of the summer. How tall are you? Record it for later! 8 Measure the amount of water you drink during the day. Is it more than 1 gallon? Thursday 2 Predict how many days will be more than 850. Keep a tally chart of how many days were more than 850 in July. Add up your tallies and see how close you were! 9 Write numbers from 1 50 skip counting by 3 s. What patterns do you see? Friday 3 If you need 26 slices of ham to make sandwiches but only have 18, how many more do you need to buy? Saturday 4 How many different ways can you cut a sandwich into 4 equal pieces? Try it with paper sandwiches. 10 Fold a piece of paper in half two times. Open it. How many rectangles? Now fold it in half 4 times. How many rectangles now? 11 Go for a hike. Count the leaves or petals on flowers or plants. What number occurs most? 5 a game that uses math like Monopoly or Chess. What game did you choose? 6 Add up the money you find around the house. Is it more than $5.00? How much more or less? 7 How many hours or minutes did you play outside today? Start: End: 12 Practice skip counting by 5 s, as you walk or run for one minute. How high did you count? 13 Look at an analog clock (with hands) Draw a picture and write the time. How many more minutes until the next hour? 14 Draw a pentagon. How do you know it s a pentagon? 15 Going out to eat? Add up the cost of your meal. 16 Have a scale? Find three objects in your home that are about the same weight. Estimate the weights and then weigh them. Were you close? 17 How many different ways can you make 50 cents with coins? 18 Practice your math facts! Make up a song to remember them! 19 1 week = days 2 weeks = days 3 weeks = days 20 Look around you. How many cubes and spheres can you find? 21 Flip a coin 20 times and make a tally chart for the heads and tails. How many heads and tails did you get? 22 Roll dice 20 times; add the numbers after each roll and record the sum. Which sum occurs the most? 23 Make up your own math activity to do today. What did you do? What math did you use? 24 Find 3 items in your home that are less than one foot long but longer than 6 inches. 25 How many hours did you sleep last night? Bedtime: Wake time: 26 Plan a party! If you have 3 friends coming, and you want to give feed each person 3 hamburgers, how many hamburgers will you need to buy? (Don t forget you!) 27 Add 700 to today s date. What s the number? 28 What s your favorite sport? What numbers and shapes are used in it? 29 Estimate how far you can jump. Measure the distance you jumped. How close were you? 30 Like to swim? If you start swimming at 9:00 a.m. and swim for two hours, at what time will you stop swimming? 31 Look in your refrigerator. What shapes and measurements are used for containers? What shape is used most? What measurement? hundreds tens ones

What are the number pairs? Spiders have 6 legs and 48 knees! How many knees are on each leg? Saturday 1 a game that uses math like Monopoly or Chess. What game did you choose? 2 Going grocery shopping? Find 3 items that would cost about $ Have a pet? Measure the amount of food you give. How much was it? 4 If you buy a candy bar that costs 87 and you pay with $1.00, how much change will you get? 5 Going on a trip? About many miles? Estimate how many hours it will take to get there. 6 You find 1 quarter, 2 dimes, 2 nickels and 3 pennies. How much money did you find? Can you show that value with fewer coins? 7 Read a favorite recipe and help make the food. Did any ingredients have fractions? 8 Going to the movies? How many people are going? What s the total cost? 9 Practice your math facts. 10 Watching a TV show or movie? What time does it start? What time does it end? How long is it? 11 Record the temperature outside in the early morning, then in the late afternoon. How many degrees did it change? 12 Jump rope or do jumping jacks counting backwards by 10 s. 13 Going to the beach? Make up a math problem about something you find at the beach. 14 What time is it right now? Think about something you are doing tomorrow. How many hours will it be until then? 15 Ask 6 people what their favorite pizza topping is. Draw a picture of a pizza with six equal Slices and the toppings. 16 Find something bigger than a potato but lighter than it. What did you find? 17 Think of things that come in 2 s, like a pair of socks. Skip count by 2 s until you reach What s your favorite number? Write two different addition and subtraction number sentences using it. 19 Estimate how many feet wide a window in your home is, then measure to the nearest foot. 20 How many years old are you? How many months is that? 21 Today is Friday. How many Fridays are there in July and August? How many have even number dates? 22 Make up your own math activity today. What did you do? 23 Measure your height again in inches and feet. Did you grow? How much? 24 Go on a shapes hunt for triangles and quadrilaterals. How are they the same? How are they different? 25 What pairs of numbers make 10? 100? 1000? Can you use a pattern to help you find them? What time will you awake? CONGRATULATIONS! 5 Dear Parents, Are you looking for an activity that will allow your child to continue learning and have fun over the summer break? Then check out Greg Tang s Summer Break Math Challenge! ( During the break, students can go to gregtangmath.com to complete the activities on the attached game board. The additional game boards are on the site listed above. This is an optional activity. Students who can t participate will not be penalized in any way. Students who complete the challenge can earn a certificate and a chance to win a personalized signed copy of one of Greg Tang s books. It is fine for students to get help from you or someone else if they need it. They can also move to a harder or easier level of the game to make things more or less challenging. After your child completes a game board, be sure to enter them for a chance to win a prize.
