3 Introduction Thank you for your interest in the role of Digital Communications Executive. This document does not form part of the terms and conditions, but aims to give you more information about the role, its context and an outline of the work you could be involved with. Background to The Scout Association s Headquarters Founded in 1907 by Robert Baden-Powell, today the Scout Association is the largest youth organisation for boys and girls in the United Kingdom. We offer fun, challenge and adventure to 400,000 young people aged 6 to 25. We are supported by over 100,000 adult volunteers who manage and operate our programme for young people. In the last five years Scouting in the UK has been growing with currently more young people wanting to join than we have space for. Recruiting more adult volunteers and supporting our existing leaders are our top priorities. The structure of The Scout Association The UK headquarters of The Scout Association is based at Gilwell Park, Chingford, London, and is operationally divided into four directorates: Chief Executive Director of Programme & Development Director of Finance Director of Marketing & Communications Director of Corporate Services The Director of Programme and Development is responsible for youth programme, adult volunteering and training, our team of regional development workers helping local Scouting grow, and our national activity centres. The Director of Finance is responsible for all financial and accounting matters, our information technology team and our two main subsidiary companies, Scout Shops Ltd and Scout Insurance Services (trading as Unity). The Director of Corporate Services is responsible for all membership administration matters, our contact centre (The Scout Information Centre), safeguarding, legal matters, our human resources team and our archives.
4 The Marketing and Communications Directorate The role of front-end website developer is located within the marketing and communications directorate. You can see our directorate structure below: Director of Marketing & Communications Personal Assistant to Director Assistant Director Assistant Director Assistant Director Head of Public Affairs Ambassador & Luminary Manager Internal Communications Team Fundraising Team Media Team Public Affairs Team Digital Communications Team Marketing Team Editorial & Design Team Partnerships Team Brand Team The team is structured as: Digital Communications Manager responsible for staff management, business processes, and progressing the digital strategy. o o o Front-end website Developer: responsible for coordinating with the IT directorate (primarily the business systems team) and being the team technical lead, alongside delivery of our digital resources. Website Designer: responsible for coordinating with the design and branding team, and implementing usability decisions, alongside delivery of our digital resources. Additional freelance resources: as required Outline of Role You will be a passionate and experienced HTML/CSS programmer, excited by beautiful code and new challenges. Alongside technical and creative colleagues you will play a crucial role in delivering the organisation s digital strategy. Your core responsibility will be to project manage and deliver a range of visually stunning digital resources, ensuring high standards across all our digital platforms. You will also have the
5 opportunity to take the Scout Association into new challenges, sharing your ideas and knowledge with colleagues and volunteers, advising on best practice where appropriate. A strong team player with excellent communication skills, you must also have real creative flair, along with an excellent working knowledge of HTML, CSS, AS3, XML, Javascript and JQuery. You should also have a good understanding of how digital communications can be used to engage stakeholders in the charity sector. 6 Job Description Digital Communications Executive Front End Website Developer JOB TITLE: Front-End website developer DIRECTORATE: Marketing and Communications DEPARTMENT: Internal & Creative Communications REPORTS TO: Digital LOCATION: Gilwell Park Communications Manager 1. PURPOSE OF THE JOB Main purpose and Responsibilities: To support the delivery of the Digital Strategy and to develop and deliver all aspects of digital content, platforms and output across The Scout Association. 2. DIRECTORATE/DEPARTMENTAL OVERVIEW (and where the job fits in) The Digital Communications team is part of the wider Marketing & Communications (M&C) directorate, comprising of marketing, fundraising, PR, communications, editorial, branding, and design professionals. Broadly, the role of the digital communications team is to provide; 1. Service delivery: supporting marketing & creative teams in their day-to-day management of digital platforms, and creation of new digital resources. This will incorporate projects of all sizes, from content changes, single static webpage builds to larger builds incorporating new functionality. 2. Systems: working with colleagues and external agencies to ensure systems, software and processes are fit for purpose 3. Strategy: assisting the digital communications manager in developing and implementing a digital strategy which supports the organisations long term aims In this role you will be required to maintain service delivery, advise on best practice where appropriate, and contribute to the wider digital aims. You will have opportunity to work with and share ideas with a wide range of colleagues, volunteers and external clients; therefore the post holder must have excellent communication skills, capable of conveying complex information to colleagues with varying levels of digital knowledge. The post holder of this role will need to be comfortable in liaising closely with other developers within the organisation Amongst other tasks required by the Digital Communications Manager, you will be involved in: Implementing The Scout Association (TSA) Digital Strategy Supporting content owners, and the content owner process and system Delivering digital communications to planned corporate themes and within brand guidelines, enabling integrated communications campaigns across all channels Day to day management of digital platforms and their content including: o TSA websites o Intranet and members areas o Delivery of E-communications with internal and external audiences o Content syndication incl. YouTube
7 Ensuring that existing functionality is optimized and applied consistently across the organisation Supporting KPI achievement through digital output To provide more tools including web/sites pages for local Groups, and provide advice on digital communications to the wider Movement Applying the principles of Search Engine Optimisation and User Experience Optimisation to digital resources Bringing into TSA innovation and best practice. Communicating the diversity of Scouting and ensure all Scouting communications are accessible This role requires close working with the IT team who will provide all development and back end support, and the editorial and design teams to support design elements and generate additional content for digital outputs. 3. QUANTITIVE DIMENSIONS OF THE JOB (managers only) Key Relationships: Digital Communications Manager, Website Designer, Internal Communications Executives, Marketing Executives, Writer/Editors, Senior Designer and Designer, Systems and Development Manager and Developers. Also internal clients and content owners. 4. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES (all positions) PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES Building CSS templates, web-pages and communications that meet brand guidelines and optimise the user experience Working with internal stakeholders to develop and build online concepts from initial brief to full design Assist in reviewing delivery systems (content management systems, provider, social media monitoring systems, etc) Assist digital communications manager in reviewing our data collection / reporting systems (web forms, analytics) Ensuring that our digital functionality and reporting tools are applied consistently consistency across our digital communications Any other duties as may reasonably be required % of time Spent (Non - managerial)

11 What s in it for me? Annual Salary: Starting salary non negotiable at 22,064 which represents Level 1 of Band D. 1 year fixed term contract Salaries are paid monthly by direct transfer on or about the 20 th of the month. Overtime is not paid although time of in lieu may be authorised. Hours of Work: 35 hours per week Location: Gilwell Park, Chingford, London Holiday Entitlement: 23 days per year plus bank holidays. This increases after two years service to 26 days and after five years to 30 days. Probationary Period: This post is subject to a 6 month probationary period. 12 Food and Drink Free lunch is provided to all employees when they are working at Gilwell Park, between Monday and Friday. Alternative arrangements are in place for staff at our Scout Activity Centres. Free beverages are available at all sites. This benefit is available immediately upon taking up employment. Looking after your future Pension For all employees, the Association has a Group Personal Pension Plan. This plan allows employees to contribute a minimum of 1.5% of their gross salary up to the maximum allowed within HMRC limits. The Association will contribute twice the employee s contribution, up to a maximum of 10% of gross salary. Life Assurance All employees are covered by a scheme which pays two times the basic salary in the event of death in service. Getting to and from work Interest free season ticket loan Employees may apply for a loan to assist with the purchase of a travel season ticket. The loan will be paid back monthly by automatic deduction from salary. Car parking All sites offer free car parking to employees Cycle to Work scheme This scheme is a form of salary sacrifice which enables employees to purchase a bicycle through the Government s Cycle to Work Scheme and can save you up to 50% on the retail value (depending on the employees tax bracket). Minibus Service (Gilwell Park) A minibus service is provided which collects colleagues at 08:40 and 08:50 from Chingford Station and drops off to the same location at 17:00 hours. Restaurant discount card This discount card is in conjunction with TasteCard and allows a range of discounts (up to 50%) on a range of restaurants across the UK.
