2 FAUNA & FLORA INTERNATIONAL Fauna & Flora International (FFI) saves species from extinction and habitats from destruction, whilst improving the livelihoods of local people. Our guiding principles are to work through local partnerships, act as a catalyst for change, make conservation relevant and base decisions on sound science. Founded in 1903, FFI is the world s longest established international conservation body. We are acutely aware of the challenges we face. The world s remaining natural habitats, and the species that depend on them for survival, are under greater pressure than at any time in recent history. However, with the health of the planet now firmly centre-stage, we have an unprecedented opportunity to make a real difference. Our success in doing so will depend on us conveying to a broader audience how our distinctive characteristics differentiate us from other organisations, while reinforcing our value in the eyes of existing donors and other stakeholders, and attracting income to the organisation. THE OPPORTUNITY This is an exciting time for FFI Communications. Since our corporate rebranding initiative, FFI has significantly increased its communications outputs, with increased media coverage, new publications and firmly established presence on social media networks. The team responsible for this success is made up of a Deputy Director of Communications and three Communications Officers one focusing on media and publications, a second on design and online communications and a third specifically on business and biodiversity. We are seeking a talented, outward-facing communications professional to fill the role of Communications Officer (Design & Online). You will have a degree or vocational qualification in a relevant discipline and a minimum of three years experience in a design, web development, communications, or a creative marketing role. Committed to our mission and with a real interest in conservation issues and the natural world, you will be able to communicate the work of FFI and its partners with confidence and credibility to a range of audiences. Confident in your design and digital management skills, you will have significant experience of maintaining and developing websites, including the use of HTML editing software (such as Dreamweaver), as well as fluency in coding languages (particularly HTML and CSS). You will also have a good understanding of how to communicate scientific concepts to non-technical audiences, and will understand the language needed to most effectively engage with global audiences on different platforms. You will enjoy working with FFI s conservation and cross-cutting teams both in Cambridge and around the world, translating our work into engaging content using your excellent knowledge of digital resources and design skills. You will thrive in a busy environment, and be used to balancing competing demands and delivering under pressure. What s more, you ll work with our Direct Marketing team to support the organisation s exciting new Supporter Recruitment & Development Strategy, which has particular objectives to drive donations and recruit new supporters through digital activities. 3 TERMS AND CONDITIONS Start Date: Duration of Contract: Probation Period: Salary: Location: Benefits: February 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter Open Six months Negotiable, dependent on skills and experience Fauna & Flora International, Cambridge, UK 25 working days annual holiday entitlement plus Public/Bank Holidays and any normal working days that fall between 24 th December to 1 st January inclusive, during which time FFI UK offices are closed. FFI currently provides a pension contribution of 2% of salary after 3 months continuous employment, rising to 8% of salary after the completion of 6 months continuous employment, or following completion of probationary period, whichever is the later. These contributions are currently non-contributory for employees. An employee can opt to join the pension scheme in their first 3 months of employment, in which case FFI will provide a pension contribution of 1% of salary for this period, provided the employee makes a minimum contribution of 1% of salary. FFI also provides Group Life insurance, currently set at a benefit of 4 x basic salary. Hours of Work: This is a full-time position, working Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.30pm, with a one-hour lunch break. 4 Overall Objective: The Communications Officer (Design & Online) liaises with the Communications, Fundraising, regional and cross-cutting teams to ensure that FFI s print and online platforms (particularly the FFI website and social media channels) are attractive and on-brand, fully-functional and maximise user experience and engagement. This is in order to raise the profile of FFI and our partners achievements amongst target audiences around the world. A key aspect of the role is to manage and expand upon FFI s web presence and engagement, coordinating content integration across social media and online platforms and positively influencing awareness of FFI around the world. General Duties: Design and production of organisational and fundraising materials Web development and online communications Managing the visual and design elements of the FFI brand Supporting an increased online presence for FFI Dealing with online and design related communications queries from FFI staff and partners Development and management of the FFI digital assets library, and responding to staff requests for images General communication administration Specific Duties Web development and management Lead on FFI s website maintenance and development - increasing its user-interactivity, audiovisual features and fundraising capacity Ensure FFI s website content is current and work with allocated page owners within regional teams to ensure project information is up to date Ensure FFI s website meets standards for best practice in accessibility and usability Manage hosting domains and DNS records Monitor usage statistics and analytics for FFI s website and social media platforms and report back to your line manager Edit, prepare and upload content to all of FFI s digital platforms, in conjunction with other communications team members Manage SEO improvements Act as site editor for the Communications team s MyFFI intranet site, to include management of the site s content and permissions (in conjunction with team members), acting as a point of contact about MyFFI for the Communications team and supporting team members in their use of MyFFI Producing communications Helping to produce a range of FFI organisational and project-based materials: Design communications materials (including magazines, leaflets, brochures, posters, banners and newsletters), using a range of software, including Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Acrobat Pro Ensure all materials adhere to FFI brand guidelines for both internal production and outsourced materials Manage relationships with external designers, printers and other agencies, when materials are outsourced
5 Ensure correct accreditation and right of use in all photographs used in FFI materials Edit copy provided by a wide range of staff to make it accessible and attractive to a range of audiences Supporting fundraising activities Help to produce direct mail fundraising appeals to hit income targets Assist in the production of materials to support FFI s major donor giving initiatives Assist in creating and maintaining online fundraising mechanisms Work with Fundraising Team on creating HTML based s to donors and supporters Work with development team to promote FFI appeals on digital platforms Support FFI s PR-related and fundraising events, including event logistics and delivery Oversee design and image selection of FFI s e-newsletter Social media channels Manage current FFI social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, Flickr and Vimeo Manage and expand FFI s web presence through new technologies and channels Identify new online trends and lead on creating an FFI presence where appropriate Write and edit content for FFI s social media accounts and advise on best practice Manage engagement and replies for comments on social media channels, working with regional teams to ensure absolute accuracy in replies Supporting other FFI related websites Advise sister websites including Oryx, IGCP, RRF, Global Trees Campaign and Conservation Leadership Programme on best practice Help manage domains and hosting of these sites Identify and assist with implementation of any new sites Consolidate and archive old sister websites Management of Digital Asset Management Manage and upkeep FFI s DAM server Create, implement and update DAM guidelines Oversee introduction of standardised DAM taxonomies/folksonomies Train staff in use of DAM software and managing user accounts Manage FFI s photographic/audio visual library, including updating with new materials and ensuring they are available across FFI Work with project staff to acquire, archive and manage images and AV materials, and introduce systems to assist in this workflow Work towards a goal where all global staff have some access to centralised photographic library PR and Media Support Deputy Director of Communications and Communications Officer (Media & Publications) with calls for information from the media Assist with uploading news, media releases, blog posts and other new page content to the website within timeframes of agreed schedules
6 Other duties Record expenditure and monitor budgets Code and process invoices and purchase orders Prepare communications reports Represent FFI at events and one to one meetings Travel As part of the position, limited UK and international travel may be required. Both training and operational activities may necessitate overnight stays away from Cambridge, in which case standard FFI procedures apply. PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential Desirable Skills Ability to work creatively with senior stakeholders and communicate effectively with them Ability to communicate complex information in many ways and to different types of audiences Ability to explain complex design and web design principles and best practice to nontechnical colleagues Excellent website maintenance and development skills, and fluency in coding languages Excellent written skills, including editing and copywriting Intuition for what makes a good story and knowledge of best practice in web engagement Strong proofreading skills Strong knowledge of graphic design Excellent attention to detail Ability to organise and plan workloads efficiently, remain calm under pressure and meet tight deadlines Competent user of Microsoft and Adobe packages including Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Acrobat Pro Knowledge of WordPress or other CMS Experience of designing and managing printed publications Understanding of video editing principles and best practice Experience using Adobe Premier Pro editing software Understanding of photography and photographic equipment A second language
