Chapter 1 General Advising Issues fr All Graduate Students Intrductin The Graduate Prgram in Applied Anthrplgy at USF aims t develp creative schlars and scientists wh will apply their knwledge and skills t cntemprary human prblems, whether as academics r practitiners. As a result, graduate studies in Applied Anthrplgy at USF are unique when cmpared with traditinal graduate prgrams in Anthrplgy. At USF, we balance wrld-class training in thery and methd with practice. Ding s places applied research cnceived and carried ut with the cmmunities where we wrk at the cre f graduate studies. We see this as a distinct advantage fr ur graduates, since it links academically rigrus schlarship with practical, first-hand experience, while prviding pprtunities fr prfessinal cllabratin, netwrking, and funding. The department ffers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Anthrplgy, thrugh which students learn the fundamentals f the fur subfields f anthrplgy, their links with ne anther, and their relatin t ther academic disciplines. While appreciating such interdisciplinary ties, students in bth degree prgrams fllw ne f fur curse tracks: Archaelgical, Bilgical, Cultural, r Medical, each f which has a set f required curses and a chice f electives. At the M.A. level, the Archaelgical Track fcuses n cursewrk in archaelgical methd and thery that prepares students fr careers in cultural resurce management r with public r private agencies and museums respnsible fr managing archaelgical resurces. At the dctral level, the track prvides advanced training and research in applied archaelgical anthrplgy, ffering preparatin fr bth academic and practicing psitins. Alngside this track, we ffer cncentratins in Archaelgical and Frensic Sciences, Cultural Resurce Management, and Heritage Studies, in which students at bth levels may chse t take curses that fcus n the practical management f archaelgical and cultural resurces. At the M.A. level, the Bilgical Track ffers fcused training in methds and theries f applied bilgical anthrplgy, preparing students fr careers in gvernment and nngvernmental agencies, cmmunity-based rganizatins, and medical fields. At the dctral level, students receive mre advanced training and research experience, and will be prepared fr bth academic and practicing psitins. Students in bth M.A. and Ph.D. prgrams may als pt t simultaneusly pursue a cncentratin in Archaelgical and Frensic Sciences r Bicultural Medical Anthrplgy by chsing elective curses frm an apprved list. At the M.A. level, the Cultural Track trains students in the methds, theries, and practices f applied cultural anthrplgy, preparing students fr careers in a variety f applied sectrs, including cmmunity rganizatin, rural r urban planning, ecnmic develpment, heritage management, educatin, private-sectr cnsulting and research, and wrk with nngvernmental rganizatins. At the dctral level, students receive mre advanced training and research experience, and will be prepared fr bth academic and practicing psitins. Students in bth M.A. and Ph.D. prgrams may als pt t simultaneusly pursue a cncentratin in Archaelgical and Frensic Sciences, Bicultural Medical Anthrplgy, Cultural Resurce Management, r Heritage Studies by chsing elective curses frm an apprved list. Wednesday, January 07,

At the M.A. level, the Medical Track prvides training in the theries, methds, and ethics f applied medical anthrplgy, and prepares students t cnduct research, evaluatin, and cnsulting in a variety f settings, including cmmunity-based rganizatins, cunty and state health departments, and nn-gvernmental rganizatins. At the dctral level, students receive mre advanced training and research experience, and will be prepared fr bth academic and practicing psitins. Students in bth M.A. and Ph.D. prgrams may pt t enrll in the dual degree prgram in ne f ten cncentratins within Public Health, and/r simultaneusly pursue a cncentratin in Bicultural Medical Anthrplgy, chsing elective curses frm an apprved list. The Department f Anthrplgy requires a minimum GPA f 3.0 fr admissin int the prgram. In additin, all students must take the Graduate Recrd Examinatin (GRE) within five years prir t admissin. Students whse first language is ther than English must submit passing scres fr the Test f English as a Freign Language (TOEFL) (taken within tw years prir t admissin). A minimum ttal scre f 79 n the internet-based test, 213 n the cmputer-based test, r 550 n the paper-based test is required. What is the admissins prcess, and what are faculty respnsibilities befre students arrive n campus? During the applicatin perid, typically mid-fall t early December, applicatin materials f prspective graduate students will be maintained in a file by the Prgram Assistant; s/he will infrm the faculty when the files are ready fr review. The Prgram Assistant will circulate general infrmatin abut the applicant pl. Faculty in each track review applicatins and make recmmendatins t the verall admissin cmmittee (made up f ne representative frm each track, the Department Chair, and the Graduate Directr).Based n this review, faculty members als identify students they are willing t advise. After the Admissins Cmmittee has made its decisins, messages will be sent t successful applicants, including identificatin f the prspective faculty advisr (als knwn as the majr prfessr). Advisrs will be tentatively assigned by the Admissins Cmmittee, based n faculty indicatins in applicant files, as well as student requests. In the event that n ne has agreed t spnsr an applicant whm the cmmittee believes shuld be admitted, the Department Chair r Graduate Directr will request that a particular faculty member cnsider serving as advisr t the student. Once acceptances are finalized, the Prgram Assistant sends messages t the new students, which include cntact infrmatin fr their advisrs and the Fall schedule, nting that their advisrs may nt be available during the summer mnths. The guidelines will indicate which curses students shuld cnsider enrlling in, but each case shuld be evaluated individually. Students in need f prerequisite curses will have been infrmed, alng with their advisrs. Once admissin decisins have been cmpleted, faculty are encuraged t send them an , intrducing themselves and ffering assistance in chsing curses and ther academic issues, even thugh many faculty will nt available during the summer. Incming students will be directed t make appintments with their advisrs during the tw weeks prir t the start f classes. Ideally, these appintments shuld be set well in advance, and faculty shuld have prvided their new advisees with infrmatin abut when they will be available during the tw-week perid. New student rientatin is typically held ne week befre classes begin; students and advisrs wh have nt already met shuld make sure t intrduce themselves at that event, and set advising Wednesday, January 07,

appintments. This first meeting is very imprtant. Advisrs shuld be prepared t answer any questins abut requirements, electives, and s frth, as well as develp a plan fr the first tw years f cursewrk. Hw shuld advisrs prepare fr initial advising? Review student s applicatin file. Make sure they knw if the students need any f the prerequisite curses (ANT 2410, 2411, 3610, 3101), and be prepared t develp a plan with the student t cmplete them within their first academic year. Students must receive a grade f B r abve (a B- is nt sufficient) in each curse t successfully pass the prerequisite curse. Students with an undergraduate degree (e.g., B.A., B.S.) in Anthrplgy are exempt frm the prerequisite curses, even if their particular degree prgram did nt require a cmplete curse in each f the fur sub-fields. Students wh nly have a minr in anthrplgy may need t cmplete sme f the prerequisites. Have n hand a cmplete set f guidelines fr the student s particular prgram. Have n hand the Fall and Spring class schedules, and a tentative schedule fr the next year, t be able t cmplete the student s tracking sheet, which lists the student s plan fr tw years f cursewrk. Make sure the student is enrlled in Fundatins f Applied Anthrplgy (unless he/she has a recent M.A. in Anthrplgy within five years prir t admissin int the Ph.D. prgram). Ensure that the student understands the significance f this curse; students must earn a grade f B r abve t cntinue in the prgram (a B- will nt be sufficient). If the student des nt successfully pass the curse with a minimum grade f B, the student will be asked t withdraw frm the prgram r else will be dismissed. If a student needs prerequisite curses, hw can these be fulfilled? Generally, students must cmplete prerequisite curses by the end f the first academic year. Students must enrll in the classes at the undergraduate-level. These credits d NOT cunt twards the graduate degree. If students have an assistantship and tuitin waiver, they shuld be aware that the waiver will nt pay fr undergraduate classes. If the student wishes t take the class at the graduate level in rder t use the waiver, they must seek permissin t enrll fr an independent study with the prfessr teaching the class, with the understanding that they will cmplete the class in the same way as any undergraduate, but a grade will be assigned under the independent study number. Students must cmplete an independent study cntract s there is a recrd in their file. PLEASE NOTE: prerequisite curses taken this way d nt cunt tward the required electives. N exceptins t this rule. Students cannt test ut f prerequisite classes. Students must receive a grade f B r abve (a B- is nt sufficient) in each curse t successfully pass the prerequisite requirement. N student will be allwed t cntinue int the secnd year withut having cmpleted all prerequisites. Students can take prerequisite curses at any cllege r university, either thrugh traditinal r nline frmats. Wednesday, January 07,

Can students transfer in classes frm ther prgrams? Requests are made with the Graduate Transfer Curses Frm. With apprval frm the Graduate Directr, a student may transfer in up t nine credits f graduate-level cursewrk frm anther institutin, r 12 credits frm enrllment at USF (fr instance, as a nn-degree-seeking student). In bth cases, a grade f B r better is required. Only credits that have NOT been used twards any ther degree can be transferred. It shuld nt be assumed that all curses will autmatically transfer; advisrs shuld discuss this with students early, and make sure the apprpriate steps are fllwed t transfer thse credits. The advisr shuld cnsult with the Graduate Directr abut the apprpriateness f transferring credits, and the Graduate Directr has authrity t make a final decisin. The Prgram Assistant will give guidance abut this prcess. In mst cases, these credits will be used t fulfill anthrplgy r external elective requirements. Can students substitute ther classes fr required Department classes? In general this is discuraged, since the required classes cnstitute the essential cre f the USF Applied Anthrplgy prgram. Hwever, ccasinally students will have taken (r wish t take) a class that is cmparable t a USF requirement (fr instance, an advanced statistics class, r a class in Applied Anthrplgy). In this case, the student may petitin t have that class accepted in lieu f the requirement (a frm is available frm the Prgram Assistant). The student must bring the syllabus f the prpsed substituted class, and a faculty member wh teaches the class at USF will be asked t review and evaluate it. The petitin must be frmally apprved by the advisr, Graduate Directr, and Department Chair. Advisrs alne d nt have the authrity t apprve the substitutin f any classes. What abut Ph.D. students wh have already taken sme required classes as part f a USF M.A. degree? USF M.A. graduates d nt need t take the required classes again. They shuld substitute electives fr thse classes already cmpleted in rder t fulfill the required credits. Is there a minimum grade pint average that students must maintain t remain in gd standing? Yes. All graduate students must maintain a 3.0 verall GPA, and cannt earn any single grade belw a C. The university s fficial plicy, included in the Graduate Catalg is: A student must maintain a minimum f a 3.0 ( B ) grade pint average ver all graduate cursewrk. Failure t d s will result in prbatinary status. A student may remain n prbatinary status fr ne semester nly, after which s/he will be terminated frm the graduate prgram. N grade belw a C will be accepted tward a graduate degree. What is a cncentratin and hw is it different frm a track? All students fllw ne f the fur tracks, but the cncentratins serve t fcus cursewrk within the track. Thus, fr instance, a student in the Cultural r Bilgical track might pt t take the Bicultural Medical Cncentratin within that track, r a Wednesday, January 07,

student in the Archaelgical Track might pt fr the Cultural Resurce Management cncentratin. The department ffers fur cncentratins: Archaelgical and Frensic Sciences (AFS), Bicultural Medical Anthrplgy (BCM), Cultural Resurce Management (CRM), and Heritage Studies (HGS). A cncentratin draws individual specialized curse fferings tgether int a fcused curriculum, and the cncentratin is nted n the transcript. Cncentratins may be declared by bth Ph.D. and M.A. students, but a frmal declaratin is required fr the prgram t be listed n the recrd. Archaelgical and Frensic Sciences Cncentratin The Archaelgical and Frensic Sciences Cncentratin is unique in Flrida and helps prepare students fr careers in the public, private, and academic sectrs within the rapidly expanding field f anthrplgy. Anthrplgical Science as a whle has becme imprtant wrldwide, and this cncentratin builds n the existing strengths f ur Applied Anthrplgy graduate degree prgrams. Interdisciplinary scientific methds are emphasized in their applicatin t archaelgical and bianthrplgical issues including materials science, human diet, mbility, identificatin, frensics, and the criminal justice sectr. T fulfill the 12-credit cncentratin, students will take: Tw required curses (3 credits each), cnsisting f Archaelgical Science (ANG 6100), and either Frensic Anthrplgy (ANG 6511) r Frensic Science (curse number TBA) Tw electives curses (3 credits each; ne may be utside Anthrplgy): Ancient Diets (ANG 6145), Ancient Trade (ANG 6193), Anthr-genetics (curse number TBA), Biarchaelgy (ANG 6511), Frensic Anthrplgy (ANG 6511), Frensic Science (ANG 6511), Advanced Methds in Frensic Anthrplgy (ANG 5937), Ostelgy (ANG 6511), Sils (ANG 6115), Technlgies fr Heritage Preservatin (ANG 6115) External electives that als qualify (nly 1 can cunt twards cncentratin): Advanced Remte Sensing (GIS 6038C), Remte Sensing Seminar (GIS 6039), Tracer Gechemistry (GLY 6255), Analytical Techniques in Gelgy (GLY 6285C), Principles f Applied Gephysics (GLY 6475), Principles f Stable Istpe Gechemistry (GLY 6739). Bicultural Medical Anthrplgy (BCM) Cncentratin Graduate students seeking this cncentratin at the M.A. r Ph.D. level r in the dual degree prgram will take the set f required curses specific t their prgram. In additin, these students will take fur graduate medical anthrplgy curses with the ANG prefix t fulfill the twelve-credit cncentratin: 1. ANG 6469 Thery and Methds in Medical Anthrplgy 2. ANG 6511 Thery and Methds f Applied Bilgical Anthrplgy 3. One curse listed under ANG 6511 Seminar in Physical Anthrplgy (e.g., Frensic Anthrplgy, Human Variatin) r Anthrplgy f Grwth and Develpment (ANG 6560). Wednesday, January 07,

4. One ffering f the fllwing: Glbal Health frm an Anthrplgical Perspective (ANG 6732), Nutritinal Assessment (ANG 6530), Health & Medical Systems (ANG 6404), Reprductive Health (ANG 6735), Anthrplgy f Health & Disasters (ANG 6731), Issues in Migrant Health (ANG 6733),r an ffering f ANG 6566, 6569, 6469, r 5937 (e.g., Anthrplgy and Develpment, Health Issues in US Minrity and Refugee Ppulatins, Nutritinal Anthrplgy, Neuranthrplgy, Sci-Cultural Aspects f HIV/AIDS). PLEASE NOTE: the Fundatins f Medical Anthrplgy n-line curse ffered thrugh the Schl f Sustainability is a service curse intended fr nn-anthrplgy students and cannt cunt twards the Applied Anthrplgy degree. Cultural Resurce Management (CRM) Cncentratin The cncentratin in Cultural Resurce Management allws M.A. and Ph.D. students the ptin f creating a cncentrated plan f study arund cntemprary issues in CRM, within the larger degree in Applied Anthrplgy. This cncentratin meets the need t train students in the principles and practices f CRM fr emplyment in the public and private sectrs f a rapidly expanding field, especially in Flrida and the larger Sutheast, as well as t equip students t teach in the field. This cncentratin is unique in Flrida. It builds n the existing strengths f the public archaelgy track while adding a mre fcused prgram f study fr students wh plan n entering the field f archaelgical resurce management r applied archaelgy as an academic field. Students in bth the M.A. and Ph.D. prgrams may chse t fulfill the cncentratin, whether they are pursuing the current Cultural Track r the Archaelgy Track. Students pursuing a cncentratin in Cultural Resurce Management must take the basic cre requirements f their particular graduate prgram. T fulfill the 9-credit cncentratin, students will take: ANG 6197 Public Archaelgy. ANG 6115 Special Tpics in Archaelgy (when tpic is Current Issues and Techniques in Cultural Resurces Management) A third curse will be selected frm the fllwing ptins: ANG6436 Issues in Heritage Turism ANG 6448 Reginal Prblems in Urban Anthrplgy (when tpic is Issues in Heritage Turism), ANG 6115 Tpics in Public Archaelgy (when tpic is Flrida Archaelgy, Histrical Archaelgy, Museum Methds, r Sutheastern Archaelgy) Graduate curse in Gegraphic Infrmatin Systems, whether ffered in Anthrplgy r anther department (with cnsent f department/instructr). Other curses as apprved by Graduate Directr. Wednesday, January 07,

Heritage Studies (HGS) Cncentratin The cncentratin in Heritage Studies allws M.A. and Ph.D. students t create a fcused plan f study arund issues f cultural heritage preservatin, interpretatin, and representatin. Students will learn t identify, dcument, and critically interpret the significance f cultural heritage in urban, rural, and nn-us settings, with a particular emphasis n cmmunity-based and cllabrative appraches t these issues. One curse, ANG 6436 (Issues in Heritage Studies), is required. In additin, students select tw electives frm amng the fllwing ptins: T fulfill the 9-credit cncentratin, students will take: ANG 5395 Visual Anthrplgy ANG 6081 Museum Methds ANG 6197 Public Archaelgy ANG 6436 Issues in Heritage Turism ANG 6448 Reginal Prblems in Urban Anthrplgy (tpics include Culture and Envirnmental Resurces, Ethnhistry, Ethnicity and Public Plicy, Heritage Research and Management, and Museums in Culture) ANG 6495 Oral and Life Histry ANG 6676 Seminar in Anthrplgical Linguistics (when the tpic is Language and Culture r Language and Racism) ANG 6497 Qualitative Research Methds in Anthrplgy Other curses as apprved by Graduate Directr Shuld everyne have a cncentratin? Nt at all. Fr sme students, ne f the fur cncentratins is useful, in that it demnstrates a particular fcus. Hwever, mst students d nt declare a cncentratin, but develp their wn individual curse f study within ne f the fur tracks. D I need t declare intent t take a cncentratin? Yes. Taking curses that fulfill a cncentratin des nt autmatically register a student fr it. Students may declare the cncentratin upn applicatin, r may decide t d it during their curse f study. Either way, students must be sure t let their advisr and the Prgram Assistant knw that they wuld like the cncentratin, as the Registrar s Office must be ntified. What happens at the end f the first semester? New students will be directed t meet with their advisrs smetime between late Octber and the end f the Fall term. This an imprtant meeting, at which student and advisr shuld be prepared t: Evaluate the student s prgress and address any academic cncerns Review the planned curses fr Spring and fr the fllwing year, and revise if necessary If it is likely that an M.A. student will wish t carry ut internship/research early (fr instance in the summer immediately fllwing the first year), it is imprtant t establish this by the beginning f the secnd semester, s that the student has time t assemble a cmmittee and write a research prpsal. Wednesday, January 07,

What is the Annual Assessment? The entire faculty will meet tward the end f the Spring semester t evaluate the academic prgress f all first-year students. Advisrs and curse instructrs will discuss each student, nting prblems, special interests, special skills, and any infrmatin that will aid in steering the student t successful cmpletin. Summaries will be written f discussins f each f the students, cpies f which will be distributed electrnically t students and their advisrs and placed in students files. Subsequent t the assessment meetings, advisrs are expected t meet with advisees t discuss any prblems r cncerns identified by the faculty and t develp a plan fr imprvement. The Graduate Directr shuld be ntified by the faculty member as t the utcme f this meeting and be kept infrmed abut nging prblems. What happens in the secnd year and beynd? Secnd-year students shuld infrm their advisrs f their enrllment plans fr the Fall semester at least tw weeks prir t the first day f classes. This will allw the advisr t review the apprpriateness f the curse selectins. Befre secnd year classes begin, the advisr shuld review the student s file, paying attentin t the transcripts f the year s grades t identify any prblems (e.g., lw grades, missing grades [M], and incmpletes [I]). If there are prblems, the student shuld be cntacted as sn as pssible. All secnd-year students will be directed t meet with their advisrs sme time during the first six weeks f class t review their plans fr the cming term and discuss internship/dissertatin research gals. Students are encuraged t check with their advisr regularly, making sure they are aware f any changes in plans r status. Students shuld als cntact the advisr if they encunter prblems f an academic nature. The advisr is nt expected t track students dwn (see sectin belw n Student Respnsibilities). Hwever, it is the advisr s respnsibility t respnd t advisees in a timely manner. If a semester has passed withut any wrd frm an advisee, faculty members are encuraged t cntact her/him and check that all is well. What is the Graduate Student Supervisry Cmmittee, and hw is it frmed? The supervisry cmmittee will guide the student s research frm cnceptualizatin thrugh the cmpletin f the thesis/dissertatin, and thus shuld be frmed in gd time. The cmmittee can be frmed any time prir t cmpletin f cursewrk, but must be in place befre an M.A. student can begin an internship, r a Ph.D. student can advance t candidacy. Generally, M.A. students shuld begin chsing their cmmittee n later than the start f the secnd year, as they are cmpleting cursewrk; Ph.D. students by the end f the secnd year. Students are respnsible fr cntacting department faculty they wish t serve, but the advisr shuld ffer cunsel abut apprpriate faculty based n the student s interests and needs. Advisrs generally take the lead in inviting external members fr dctral cmmittees (see dctral cmmittee sectin, Chapter 3). Students must btain the cnsent f all members f their cmmittee. Once the members f the supervisry cmmittee have agreed t serve, the student shuld ntify the Prgram Assistant, wh will prepare the fficial frm, which requires the signatures f all members. Students are respnsible fr btaining the signatures f Wednesday, January 07,

utside cmmittee members. The signed frm will be sent t the Cllege f Arts Graduate Studies Department and a cpy will be placed in the student s file. What is the prcedure fr changing the advisr/majr prfessr? Students shuld be aware that, while the department tries t match advisrs and students, it is nt uncmmn fr the student t change fcus, r t develp a gd wrking relatinship with anther prfessr. Under these cnditins, a change f advisrs is apprpriate and cmpletely acceptable. Prir t the frmatin f the supervisry cmmittee, a change in advisr may ccur at any time, initiated either by the student r the advisr. It simply requires cmpletin f the departmental Change f Advisr frm, t be signed by bth existing and new advisrs. A transitin als quite ften ccurs at the time the student has cmpleted cursewrk, r has made a decisin abut thesis r dissertatin interests, and is ready t frm the supervisry cmmittee. The riginal advisr may nt be the best chice at this juncture, and students are fully encuraged t make whatever changes serve their interests, prvided the prspective advisr agrees t serve. It is imprtant that students discuss and explain the change with their initial advisr during a face-t-face meeting; merely leaving a frm t be signed is nt sufficient. It is the student s respnsibility t meet in persn with the existing advisr t infrm him/her f the desired change. Once the change has been agreed upn, the frm must be filed with the Prgram Assistant. The new advisr will becme the Majr Prfessr, and will be listed as such n the Supervisry Cmmittee frm. Once the Supervisry Cmmittee frm is filed, change is discuraged, althugh it is pssible. If subsequent changes are needed, a new Supervisry Cmmittee frm must be executed, with reasns dcumented. Changes in ther Supervisry Cmmittee members als must be fficially nted; it is the student s respnsibility t infrm the Prgram Assistant in this event. Changes in Majr Prfessr cannt be made, except under unusual circumstances, nce the student embarks n an internship, r (fr Ph.D. students) has advanced t candidacy. If prblems arise in an advising relatinship, bth parties are encuraged t attempt mediatin by the Graduate Directr r Department Chair. This is a crucial relatinship that shuld be free f animsity, and if prblems cannt be reslved, all effrt shuld be exerted t find a new slutin. Students must have a Majr Prfessr in rder t graduate, s requests t serve shuld nt be refused fr frivlus reasns. Hwever, n faculty member can be cmpelled t serve as advisr fr a particular student. If a student is unable t find anyne n the faculty wh will serve, after reasnable effrts n the part f the Graduate Directr r Department Chair t render assistance, the student will nt be able t cmplete the prgram. May a student have a c-majr Prfessr? C-Majr Prfessrs are typically nly allwed when a student s majr prfessr leaves the university (fr example, because f retirement). In this case, if the Majr Prfessr is willing t cntinue serving n the student s cmmittee, he/she may d s as a C-Majr Prfessr, alng with anther faculty member. Wednesday, January 07,

What is the Cllquium, and wh presents at it? All M.A. students must give a presentatin at the annual Cllquium as a requirement fr graduatin. This usually ccurs n the third Friday f Octber. This presentatin essentially replaces a frmal thesis defense, althugh it happens earlier in the prgram. Ideally, students present after they finish their internships/research prjects; the presentatin takes the frm f a reprt n the research experience rather than a presentatin f final research cnclusins. Hwever, since the Cllquium nly happens nce a year, sme students may present earlier, depending n stage in the prgram. Fr instance, students might present a research prpsal if it is likely that by the time the next Cllquium happens, they might already have graduated. Early in the Fall semester, the Graduate Directr will ask the faculty t identify students wh shuld present, and will then cntact the students t btain a title and cpy f the paper fr circulatin t a discussant. Advisrs shuld assist students in preparing the presentatin, and shuld help ensure they meet the deadlines t get material t the Graduate Directr. Is the advisr respnsible fr securing financial aid fr advisees? Advisrs are nt respnsible fr arranging financial aid fr advisees, but they are encuraged t help students find ways t get supprt if needed. Fr instance, advisrs are encuraged t help thrugh such strategies as: Becming aware f pprtunities fr assistantships in the department and elsewhere Cnsidering advisees fr pprtunities fr paid invlvement in research prjects Cnsidering applying fr funding that wuld help supprt their advisees wrk Researching fellwships fr dissertatin research and encuraging advisees t apply. Many fellwships require an applicatin/nminatin by a faculty member. Is the advisr respnsible fr giving guidance beynd academic issues? The advisr is nrmally the first pint f cntact when a student encunters prblems related t her/his academic prgram. The advisr shuld make every attempt t help the student reslve academic issues; if the advisr needs help related t prgram plicies, requirements, and s frth, the Graduate Directr r Department Chair may be asked t prvide clarificatin. In the event f an academic dispute, faculty and students shuld be aware f the USF Grievance Prcedures, available at These require that an attempt be made t reslve the prblem at the department level, beginning with the advisr and prceeding t the Graduate Directr and Department Chair. If the dispute cannt be reslved at this level, the student shuld be advised f her/his right t pursue a frmal grievance at the Cllege level. As defined by the university, an academic grievance is a claim that a specific academic decisin r actin that affects that student s academic recrd r status has vilated published plicies and prcedures, r has been applied t the grievant in a manner different frm that used fr ther students. Grievances may relate t such decisins as the assignment f a grade seen by the student as incrrect r the dismissal r failure f a student fr his r her actin(s). Academic grievances will nt deal with general student cmplaints. Wednesday, January 07,

Advisrs are nt expected t ffer cunseling abut persnal prblems, but shuld be aware f apprpriate referrals fr students whse prblems are interfering with their academic perfrmance. Again, the assistance f the Graduate Directr r Department Chair may be sught in these matters. Advisrs are nt respnsible fr intervening in prblems f disputes between a student and her/his assistantship supervisr. Students shuld be advised t cntact the Department Chair if they encunter prblems in that relatinship. Is the advisr respnsible fr ffering emplyment assistance after graduatin? Advisrs are nt respnsible fr securing emplyment fr graduates, but they are likely t be an imprtant resurce in this regard. They shuld certainly prvide advice and assistance, fr example by reviewing the student s curriculum vitae and draft cver letters, and referring them t jb pprtunities when they can. Advisrs will rdinarily be asked t write letters f recmmendatin which can be crucial t the success f an applicant. Advisrs shuld take this respnsibility very seriusly and ensure that they d nt damage a student s prspects by lateness r neglect. What is cnsidered gd academic prgress? Students are expected t maintain at least a 3.0 GPA while in the prgram. University guidelines set a limit f five years fr the cmpletin f an M.A. prgram and eight fr a Ph.D. Hwever, it is entirely pssible, and desirable, fr students t cmplete their degrees in a shrter perid f time. M.A. students are expected t start their research by their secnd summer, and t cmplete their degrees in their third year. Ph.D. students are expected t take their qualifying exams and advance t candidacy by the end f their third year. If a M.A. student has nt initiated research by the end f the third year, r mre than tw years lapse between the cllquium presentatin and the cmpletin f the thesis, r if a Ph.D. student has nt qualified by the end f the furth year, they may be dismissed fr lack f academic prgress. If a student fails t cmplete his/her M.A. in five years, r his/her Ph.D. in eight years, he/she will be dismissed, unless a Time Limit Extensin Request frm has been apprved by the Department and the Graduate Schl n the basis f extenuating circumstances. Time Limit Extensins will nly be granted t students wh have been making gd academic prgress. Wednesday, January 07,

Chapter 2 Prgram Guidelines and Advising Issues fr M.A. Students Intrductin The M.A. prgram in Applied Anthrplgy trains students in the applicatin f all fields f anthrplgical schlarship t human prblems, leading t careers in practice and/r preparing them fr further study. It stresses rigrus educatin in thery and practice, and the develpment f applied research skills. Initiated in 1974, the M.A. prgram at USF was the first in the natin t fcus n career training fr the practice f applied anthrplgy. Faculty specializatins include medical anthrplgy, human bilgy, urban plicy and cmmunity develpment, educatinal anthrplgy, media studies, ethnic plicies and heritage, ecnmic develpment, immigratin, archaelgy, cultural resurce management, gender, envirnment, and archaelgical science. Gegraphic specializatins emphasize the Caribbean, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the United States. Apprximately 300 graduates have received an USF educatin in anthrplgy and its practical uses, leading t emplyment in gvernment and private-sectr agencies and rganizatins. Fr many, the M.A. is a terminal degree that qualifies them fr prfessinal careers in administratin, prgram evaluatin, planning, research, and cultural resurce management. Others have cntinued n t earn dctral degrees and have gained emplyment in academic r higher-level nnacademic psitins. Master s level educatin at USF has fur emphases Archaelgical, Bilgical, Cultural, and Medical, althugh these fur tracks share sme cmmn requirements, and all are bund by general rules f the Graduate Schl, they have different curricula and emplyment trajectries. Archaelgical Track graduates typically enter careers in cntract archaelgy, r public and private agencies respnsible fr managing archaelgical resurces. The Bilgical Track ffers fcused training in methds and theries f applied bilgical anthrplgy, preparing students fr careers in gvernment and nn-gvernmental agencies, cmmunitybased rganizatins, and medical fields. The Cultural Track is designed t lead t emplyment in diverse areas that include educatin, urban planning, human services, private sectr cnsulting and research, and nn-gvernmental cmmunity rganizatins. Museum and heritage prgramming represent areas f verlap between the tw emphases. The Medical Track ffers training that prepares students t cnduct research, evaluatin, and cnsulting in a variety f health care settings including cmmunity-based rganizatins, cunty and state health departments, and nn-gvernment rganizatins. Admissin Requirements A B.A. with a majr in Anthrplgy is preferred. Hwever, the prgram at USF emphasizes multidisciplinary training and cllabrative research, and prmising students frm ther fields are encuraged t apply. Students withut an Anthrplgy backgrund will be required t cmplete fur prerequisite undergraduate curses (r their equivalent frm anther institutin): Cultural Anthrplgy (ANT 2410), Bilgical Anthrplgy (ANT 2511), Anthrplgical Linguistics (ANT 3610), and Archaelgy (ANT 3101). The Department requires Wednesday, January 07,

a minimum GPA f 3.0 fr admissin int the prgram. In additin, all students must have taken the Graduate Recrd Examinatin (GRE) within five years prir t admissin. Freign students wh teach their wn curses are required t pass the Speak Test. Degree Requirements Curse requirements fr each track differ, as described belw. Hwever, requirements and expectatin fr the internships and thesis are identical. The prgram results in nly ne graduate degree: the M.A. in Applied Anthrplgy. 23 When shuld planning fr the internship/research begin? Nrmally, all f the cursewrk shuld be cmpleted, including a passing grade (B r abve) in Fundatins f Applied Anthrplgy. Prir t planning the internship, the advisr (als knwn as the majr prfessr) shuld review the student s file t ensure these requirements have been met. Mving thrugh the apprval prcess takes sme time, s it is advisable t begin the prcess early in the semester prir t that in which the student intends t carry ut the internship/research. Smetimes an pprtunity t d an apprpriate internship may arise prir t cmpletin f cursewrk. In thse circumstances, it is usually pssible t establish an ut-fsequence internship, as lng as the cmmittee members and the Graduate Directr apprve. Hwever, students wishing t d early internships must still cmplete the prpsal prcess utlined belw and btain the apprval f their entire cmmittee. Out f sequence internships are nt recmmended fr students wh have nt cmpleted the apprpriate cre methds curse. What is the internship, and hw is it structured? The internship is essentially a research experience, in which the student develps a research prject in partnership with a spnsring agency and the advisr/cmmittee. The internship may vary in frm, fr example: Placement with a public r private agency, rganizatin, r firm, in which the student has a defined rle that will last a minimum f ne semester (r ne summer) f regular wrk, cmpleted under the supervisin f an identified staff member f that entity. This may be a frmal internship, (fr instance, larger agencies may have an internship prgram fr which students apply). Sme internships are paid, either by the spnsr r perhaps thrugh a faculty member s funding, but many thers are vluntary. It may als be a less frmal arrangement, in which the student appraches the preferred partner, perhaps suggesting a particular research prject s/he wuld like t perfrm. In any event, the wrk will have an applied dimensin that will benefit the spnsr. Ideally, the student and advisr shuld have a face-t-face meeting with the prspective agency supervisr t discuss the terms and gals f placement. Based n this cnversatin, the student will write a prpsal that frms a cntract that will be helpful shuld misunderstandings arise during the curse f the internship experience. The student shuld maintain cntact with his r her advisr during the internship, and the advisr is expected t mediate in the event prblems develp. The advisr shuld als be prepared t ffer suggestins fr the cnduct f the internship, cunsel regarding methdlgy and ethics, and assistance in cnceptualizing the develpment f a thesis frm the internship experience. Students shuld secure Institutinal Review Bard clearance frm USF befre cnducting research with human participants invlved as part f their internship (see belw). Students wishing t wrk with a fr-prfit agency r rganizatin must secure a paid internship. Sme internships, particularly in archaelgy, may nt invlve a frmal placement, but mre accurately cnsist f a research prject dne under the auspices f the department fr instance at a field site r in a lab setting. In preparing the prpsal, the student is expected t discuss the applied dimensin f the wrk, including its ptential benefits t the public. Wednesday, January 07,

Wh shuld be n the M.A. Supervisry Cmmittee, and hw is it frmed? The M.A. supervisry cmmittee must have a minimum f three members, at least tw frm the department (fr cmpsitin f M.A./M.P.H. cmmittees, see Chapter 4). A student may chse t add additinal members, either frm within r utside the department; hwever, there must always be three faculty members frm the Department f Anthrplgy n the cmmittee. Usually, the student makes the first cntact with faculty wh may be apprpriate t serve n the cmmittee, but it is usually helpful t discuss pssible members with the advisr befre appraching ther faculty. When inviting faculty members t serve n the cmmittee, the student shuld apprise them in general terms abut the nature f the prject, s that they can make an infrmed decisin. As detailed abve, the cmmittee ideally shuld be cmpsed prir t cmpletin f cursewrk but must be frmalized befre the internship prpsal is apprved. Once all members have agreed, the advisr shuld ntify the Prgram Assistant, wh will create the cmmittee frm and file it with the Graduate Schl. What is the Internship/Research Prpsal, and when shuld it be develped? Once the internship/research is chsen, in cnsultatin with the advisr/majr prfessr, the student writes a prpsal. Prir t that, the student must have chsen her/his Supervisry Cmmittee (see abve). The prpsal takes the frm f a relatively brief dcument (typically pages) which utlines the research questin(s), the research site, and methdlgy, and ffers a preliminary literature review (see Appendix II). The student submits the prpsal t the Majr Prfessr; nce the prfessr decides it is ready fr review by the entire cmmittee, it is circulated t them, and a meeting is scheduled (giving the cmmittee members at least tw weeks t review the dcument). The advisr is respnsible fr scheduling that meeting. At the meeting, the student discusses the prpsal, and cmmittee members share their cmments and suggestins. In light f that discussin, the student may be asked t revise the prpsal; hwever, assuming there are n majr prblems, the cmmittee apprves the prpsal, using the M.A. Internship Prpsal Apprval frm. The student may then sign up fr internship hurs, cmplete an internship cntract, and begin the research, subject t IRB apprval, if human participants are invlved (see What abut IRB? belw). What abut IRB? All students wh are wrking with human participants must cmplete a USF Institutinal Review Bard (IRB) n-line applicatin, naming the Majr Prfessr as c-pi. In mst cases, an expedited review is apprpriate. Hwever, students shuld plan apprpriately as the review prcess takes several week and revisins are ften requested befre apprval is granted. Research may nt begin until the IRB applicatin is apprved. Visit fr guidelines and instructins. Students wh have cmpleted ANG 6766 (Research Methds) shuld have sme familiarity with the prcess, but the advisr shuld still be available t assist and advise with the preparatin. Students are respnsible fr submitting the IRB applicatin and respnding prmptly t required revisins. Students must prvide their advisrs with a cpy f the applicatin fr Wednesday, January 07,

their review, and must incrprate the advisr s suggested changes befre submitting the applicatin nline. An apprved thesis prpsal must accmpany the IRB applicatin. In rder t allw the student t begin the research prmptly, the advisr shuld assist the student in mving as quickly as pssible thrugh the cmmittee frmatin/prpsal apprval/irb applicatin. The Majr Prfessr and student must cmplete mandatry investigatr educatin fr human subject prtectin befre an IRB applicatin will be apprved. There are tw types f requirements a ne-time cmpletin f the fundatin requirement, and annual cmpletin f an IRB-apprved cntinuing educatin curse. Sme f these are n-line (e.g., NIH Human Participant Prtectins Educatin fr Research Teams), while thers are live curses (e.g., Internatinal Research), ffered at USF. Students and advisrs shuld cnsult the Office f Research, Divisin f Research Integrity and Cmpliance website at prcess fr this training will be addressed in ANG 6766 (Research Methds). What steps must the student fllw prir t travelling fr research purpses? Students wh participate in university-related internatinal travel shuld register their plans with the Educatin Abrad ffice and enrll in CISI emergency medical and evacuatin insurance, as apprpriate. Mre infrmatin is available at What kinds f issues may arise during the internship? If the student is cnducting wrk with an agency, the internship prpsal shuld include a sectin that utlines the wrk that will be perfrmed, the rights and bligatins f bth the student and the hst agency, and issues such as hw data cllected may be used fr the student s thesis and ther research endeavrs. Advisrs shuld assist in negtiating this, t avid cnflicts later. On ccasin, it may be necessary fr advisrs t intercede n behalf f students, r help mediate, shuld cnflicts arise during the curse f an internship. If serius incidents ccur, the Department Chair, Graduate Directr, and ther cmmittee members shuld be infrmed. In any event, the advisr shuld maintain regular cntact with the student, wh shuld seek assistance when needed. Sme agencies may require students t write a reprt t them, utlining the wrk dne, cntributins made, and ffering recmmendatins. This may be particularly likely if the internship was in the frm f a paid psitin. In ther cases, the thesis alne may be sufficient. As stated abve, it is imprtant that the student and advisr ensure that all expectatins are clearly understd frm the beginning and fulfilled. What is a thesis prpsal, and hw des it differ frm the internship prpsal? Once the research is cmplete, the student shuld write a brief thesis prpsal, in cnsultatin with the advisr. While the internship prpsal was essentially a prpsal t carry ut the wrk, the thesis prpsal shuld describe the frm f the thesis itself, including an utline f chapters. It shuld state a prblem, and utline literature, methdlgy, and results/recmmendatins. Essentially, this dcument allws the student and advisr t tuch base n hw the internship turned ut, and hw (if at all), the final thesis plan will be different frm the riginal prpsal. Wednesday, January 07,

Other cmmittee members may be cnsulted at this pint, at the discretin f the advisr. This wuld be mst apprpriate if the research has taken a different r unexpected turn. Otherwise, the advisr may apprve the prpsal, and nte this in the student s file. At that pint, the advisr shuld infrm the cmmittee that the student has nw begun writing the thesis, and the student shuld enrll in thesis hurs. Hw des writing the thesis prceed? Once the prpsal has been apprved and the M.A. Thesis Prpsal Apprval frm is signed and submitted t the Prgram Assistant, the student enrlls in thesis hurs and begins writing. The sequence in which the chapters are written shuld be discussed between the student and advisr, but it is recmmended that a timetable be established fr the submissin f draft chapters. The invlvement f cmmittee members during the creatin f the first draft will depend n varius factrs, but the advisr is respnsible fr mnitring the student s prgress and determining the pint at which the draft thesis is ready t be circulated t the cmmittee. Advisrs shuld prvide timely feedback n drafts that are submitted and keep the ther cmmittee members infrmed abut the student s prgress. The USF Writing Center ffers assistance t any student wh wants t imprve his r her writing skills. The services are free, and 50-minute, ne-n-ne appintments may be scheduled at the Receptin Desk in LIB125 (behind the Library Reference desk) r thrugh their website ( Thesis writers can benefit frm this service by receiving cnsultatins n grammar and punctuatin, as well as imprving fcus, develpment, rganizatin, flw, and style. Once the advisr is satisfied that the thesis is ready fr review by the entire cmmittee, the student shuld be instructed t prvide cpies t each f them allwing them sufficient time t read and review (fur weeks at a minimum). Students shuld nt expect their first draft t be immediately acceptable, as cmmittee members may request revisins and thus may expect t review additinal drafts. Timely submissin f the thesis is the student s respnsibility. The final acceptance f the thesis ccurs when all f the cmmittee members have read and apprved a cmplete draft. There is n frmal defense f the thesis. Accrding t Graduate Schl regulatins, students must register t submit their thesis t the Graduate Schl and must attend an Electrnic Thesis/Dissertatin (ETD) wrkshp the semester prir t that in which they intend t graduate. Students must submit an electrnic cpy f the final thesis t the Graduate Schl by the 12 th week f the semester in which they will graduate. Fr infrmatin n the EDT prcess, visit PLEASE NOTE: The student him/herself is respnsible fr making sure that the manuscript adheres t the required frmat. The advisr is required t review and apprve the final PDF f the thesis.
