1 Student Learning Objectives Assessment Reprt Criminal Justice Prgram June 1, 2015 Objectives & Curriculum Objective Mapping See attached revised Criminal Justice Assessment Mapping Tl (revised Spring 2014) Objective Assessed AA - Criminal Justice N assessment was scheduled fr AA-CJ. The infrmatin captured in Spring 2014 was related t Objective 1 Knwledge f Criminal Justice and the results were presented in the 2014 reprt. The data were cllected frm CRIM295 (Ethics in Criminal Justice). This curse serves as the highest required curse fr the AA-CJ and a midpint curse fr BA-CJ students. BA - Criminal Justice Objective 4: Effective Cmmunicatin Skills (CRIM 500 Spring 2014) 4a. Effective Verbal Cmmunicatin Skills 4b. Effective Written Cmmunicatin Skills Direct Assessment BA Criminal Justice T assess Objective 4, department faculty utside f the curse instructr was selected t either bserve final research presentatins via face-t-face and nline frmats r read final research papers fr bth sectins (F2F & nline). The scring rubrics used were the Oral Cmmunicatin Value Rubric and Written Cmmunicatin Value Rubric cnstructed and validated by the Assciatin f American Clleges & Universities (AACU). Tw sectins f Seminar in Criminal Justice (CRIM 500) were taught bth face-t-face and nline in Spring Results are prvided in aggregate fr all sectins, and then by sectin, and a cmparisn f results by curse methd (traditinal face-t-face and nline).

3 Indirect Assessment Of 30 students wh were enrlled in the tw sectins f CRIM 500, 2 students attained an A, 21 students achieved a B, 6 received a C, 0 received a D, and 1 received an F in the CRIM 500 curse. One student received an F but was nt attending class t be evaluated fr the verbal r written assessment. Online Sectins A B C D F W Online Face-t-Face Ttal (F) The vast majrity f criminal justice students received abve average grades (n=23). In ascertaining curse grades, students were scred n debates, discussin bard psts, class presentatins and the final paper. Overall Evaluatin The verall quantitative results demnstrate the criminal justice prgram is nt meeting Objective 4: Effective Cmmunicatin Skills in either realm f verbal r written skills. The scres are barely meeting benchmark. The baseline scres are nly t be imprved upn after assessment f assignments, expectatins and standards are discussed during the CJ prgram s summer retreat. There seems t be a discnnect between the assessment f faculty given rubric scres and grades achieved, althugh a partial explanatin is reviewers nly assessed a prtin f the verall class (final papers and presentatins). Ptentials Explanatins It is pssible research, writing and presentatin assignments and skills are lacking within lwer-level curses; hwever, this may be instructr dependent. It is duly nted that instructr diligence and guidance is needed fr assignment cmprehensin and cmpletin in all curses, regardless f level. A review f the research and writing prcess fr papers and presentatins may be in rder, as well as the types f writing assignments and/r research cmpnents in each class. Areas f Imprvement In Summer 2015, CJ faculty will be prvided a frm t assess the types and purpses f written assignments and verbal presentatins in every curses taught (see Appendix C). Data will be cllected and discussins held t determine writing, research, citatin, and presentatin expectatins fr upper-, lwer- and intrductry curses in criminal justice. It is hped t link these bjectives t the Department bjectives. 3
4 A mdule with resurces n research skills and APA citatin will be cmpiled and prvided t faculty fr cnsistency f infrmatin in all curses. The mdule wuld be via the D2L nline management system. Faculty input will be sught fr additinal infrmatin. A revisin f the cntent fr the First Year Experience class may be needed. The revisin wuld include incrpratin f research, citatin, and writing cmpnents. In additin, students wuld start cllege resumes as the expectatin is a ne-page resume by their secnd year. Based n the abve data, what changes d yu prpse? N drastic measures shuld take place at this time. The CJ prgram implemented prerequisite curses fr all required classes in its majr as f Fall This substantive change may need this upcming year t determine its effectiveness and impact. At this time, CJ faculty shuld determine the level f cmpetency preferred by the final stages f a student s tenure in the prgram. Additinally, writing and presentatin skills shuld be intrduced sner int the curriculum. Prir t changes, an assessment f current practices will take place. It is clear the need t write is an imprtant element in the criminal justice field. Even mre s, the need t be cncise and cmprehensive is mst imprtant, as well as dcumentatin.
