1 Graduate Prgram in Schl Psychlgy Student Prtfli Requirements Educatinal Specialist Prgram Prgram Plicy: Students in the Schl Psychlgy Ed.S. prgram are required t develp and maintain a cumulative prtfli reflecting their prfessinal preparatin in schl psychlgy thrughut the curse f their training prgram, and t submit the prtfli fr faculty review n three specific ccasins (spring f Year 1, fall f Year 2, and spring f Year 3), and at ther times upn request. Apprved by Prgram Faculty Endrsed by the Executive Cmmittee f Student Affiliates f Schl Psychlgy Intrductin: Students develp and maintain a cumulative Prtfli f their prgress thrughut their Schl Psychlgy preparatin prgram. A prtfli is a systematic and rganized cllectin f evidence cncerning a student s prfessinal cmpetencies and persnal grwth. The prtfli is essential t: 1. the develpment f self-evaluatin skills, 2. the dcumentatin f acquired cmpetencies, 3. the cntinuus nature f develpment in all cmpetency areas, & 4. mnitring and charting academic and prfessinal develpment. The gal f the prtfli is fr students t develp a tl fr reflectin that can be used thrughut their career. This will prvide a purpseful cllectin f wrk that shws the student s effrts, prgress, and achievement in specified areas. The prtfli des nt replace graded assessment thrugh evaluatin f assignments that faculty members maintain fr each curse. Rather, the prtfli prvides pprtunities fr students t cnnect field and classrm experiences and t reflect n interpretatins and judgments that mst assessment des nt allw. A prtfli is nt simply a prduct t shw t a

2 ptential emplyer that describes the student s accmplishments rather it can als serve as a vehicle fr reflectin. Its true value becmes enhanced when it leads t mid-curse crrectins in prfessinal preparatin. Types f Prtflis: Entrance, Wrking & Prfessinal As a vehicle t help with nging reflectin and cntinuus imprvement thrughut yur prgram, students shuld begin t develp an Entrance prtfli during Year 1 f graduate study. The entrance prtfli is a reflectin f the student s entering experiences, beliefs, knwledge and gals. In the prgram, students will be guided by peers and prfessrs t build n this base and develp a Wrking prtfli t dcument understanding f self as schl psychlgist during the secnd year in the prgram. Near the cmpletin f the prgram f study, students will be guided t select a few exemplar-pieces f evidence that will be placed in a Prfessinal prtfli. This prtfli will serve as a tl when interviewing fr the first psitin as a schl psychlgist by allwing thers t see a prtrait f the graduating student s activities and prfessinal identity. This prfessinal prtfli shuld nt be cnsidered a summative evaluatin, but nly a step in nging prfessinal develpment. It is recmmended that graduates seek peer r supervisr supprt t regularly (semi-annually r annually) update evidence and written reflectins regarding their practices with children and families. In Summary with timelines: Entrance Prtfli A reflectin f entering experiences, beliefs, knwledge, gals and early exemplars f training created within a lse-leaf file flder as a paper versin nly. Available fr review at the cnclusin f the Spring Semester f Practicum I (due date t be determined by Practicum I instructr). The Practicum I instructr will review this prtfli and prvide feedback within the cntext f Practicum I. Wrking Prtfli T dcument the student s nging understanding f self as schl psychlgist. The paper versin f the prtfli expands the Entrance Prtfli and serves as a tl fr the Internship Readiness Review. The Wrking prtfli shuld be available fr faculty review n Nvember 5 f Year 2. The Wrking prtfli will be reviewed by the students advisr, and feedback will be prvided during the individual pre-intern cnference with prgram faculty, generally held in early t mid December f Year 2. In additin, an electrnic versin f the prtfli is t be develped by the final week f the Fall semester, and will be evaluated fr rganizatin/layut. Prfessinal Prtfli Serves as a tl when interviewing fr the first psitin as a schl psychlgist by allwing thers t see a prtrait f the graduating student s prfessinal skills and identity. The Prfessinal prtfli shuld be submitted fr Faculty review in the late spring (May 1), prir t beginning emplyment interviews. Earlier submissin is encuraged if feedback is desired. Feedback n the Prfessinal prtfli will be prvided within the cntext f Integrating Experiences in Schl Psychlgy.

Prtfli Organizing the Prtfli: Basic Infrmatin/Layut Organize prtfli in binder f apprpriate size fr vlume f prducts; an extended width binder t accmmdate tabs is recmmended and a D-ring binder is preferred. Include identifying infrmatin (name, title, affiliatin) n the frnt and spine f the binder; mit specific references t prtfli versin. Divide sectins using tabs that are labeled, with key wrds identifying sectin cntent versus generic frmat (1, 2, 3, etc.); tabs shuld extend beynd inserts but nt utside binder Include Table f Cntents; within each sectin, include an advance rganizer that illustrates the link between dmain and the prducts selected Use clear plastic inserts r ther apprpriate system t display prducts Layut/presentatin quality shuld be clear and easy t read Prducts shuld be free f spelling/grammar errrs, instructr cmments, and any cnfidential infrmatin Be selective: include the best exemplars f yur wrk, nt everything yu ve ever dne! Prfessinal appearance in paper/binder selectin; avid paper with distracting graphics and keep fnt use cnstant Use initials instead f names/pseudnyms in all prfessinal reprts invlving clients r cnsultees. Organizing the Prtfli: Cnceptual Framewrk The prtfli shuld be rganized arund the 2010 NASP dmains f Schl Psychlgy Training and Practice: 2.1 Data Based Decisin Making and Accuntability Schl psychlgists have knwledge f varied methds f assessment and data cllectin methds fr identifying strengths and needs, develping effective services and prgrams, and measuring prgress and utcmes. As part f a systematic and cmprehensive prcess f effective decisin making and prblem slving that permeates all aspects f service delivery, schl psychlgists demnstrate skills t use psychlgical and educatinal assessment, data cllectin strategies, and technlgy resurces and apply results t design, implement, and evaluate respnse t services and prgrams.

4 2.2 Cnsultatin and Cllabratin Schl psychlgists have knwledge f varied methds f cnsultatin, cllabratin, and cmmunicatin applicable t individuals, families, grups, and systems and used t prmte effective implementatin f services. As part f a systematic and cmprehensive prcess f effective decisin making and prblem slving that permeates all aspects f service delivery, schl psychlgists demnstrate skills t cnsult, cllabrate, and cmmunicate with thers during design, implementatin, and evaluatin f services and prgrams. 2.3 Interventins and Instructinal Supprt t Develp Academic Skills Schl psychlgists have knwledge f bilgical, cultural, and scial influences n academic skills; human learning, cgnitive, and develpmental prcesses; and evidence-based curriculum and instructinal strategies. Schl psychlgists in cllabratin with thers, demnstrate skills t use in assessment and data-cllectin methds and t implement and evaluate services that supprt cgnitive and academic skills. 2.4 Interventins and Mental Health Services t Develp Scial and Life Skills Schl psychlgists have knwledge f bilgical, cultural, develpmental, and scial influences n behavir and mental health; behaviral and emtinal impacts n learning and life skills; and evidence-based strategies t prmte scial-emtinal functining and mental health. Schl psychlgists, in cllabratin with thers, demnstrate skills t use assessment and data-cllectin methds and t implement and evaluate services that supprt scializatin, learning, and mental health. 2.5 Schl-Wide Practices t Prmte Learning Schl psychlgists have knwledge f schl and systems structure, rganizatin, and thery; general and special educatin; technlgy resurces; and evidence-based schl practices that prmte academic utcmes, learning, scial develpment, and mental health. Schl psychlgists, in cllabratin with thers, demnstrate skills t develp and implement practices and strategies t create and maintain effective and supprtive learning envirnments fr children and thers. 2.6 Preventive and Respnsive Services Schl psychlgists have knwledge f principles and research related t resilience and risk factrs in learning and mental health, services in schls and cmmunities t supprt multi-tiered preventin, and evidencebased strategies fr effective crisis respnse.

5 Schl psychlgists, in cllabratin with thers, demnstrate skills t prmte services that enhance learning, mental health, safety, and physical well-being thrugh prtective and adaptive factrs and t implement effective crisis preparatin, respnse, and recvery. 2.7 Family-Schl Cllabratin Services Schl psychlgists have knwledge f principles and research related t family systems, strengths, needs, and culture; evidence-based strategies t supprt family influences n children s learning, scializatin, and mental health; and methds t develp cllabratin between families and schls. Schl psychlgists, in cllabratin with thers, demnstrate skills t design, implement, and evaluate services that respnd t culture and cntext and facilitate family and schl partnership/ interactins with cmmunity agencies fr enhancement f academic and scial-behaviral utcmes fr children. 2.8 Diversity in Develpment and Learning Schl psychlgists have knwledge f individual differences, abilities, disabilities, and ther diverse characteristics; principles and research related t diversity factrs fr children, families, and schls, including factrs related t culture, cntext, and individual and rle differences; and evidence-based strategies t enhance services and address ptential influences related t diversity. Schl psychlgists demnstrate skills t prvide prfessinal services that prmte effective functining fr individuals, families, and schls with diverse characteristics, cultures, and backgrunds and acrss multiple cntexts, with recgnitin that an understanding and respect fr diversity in develpment and learning and advcacy fr scial justice are fundatins f all aspects f service delivery. 2.9 Research and Prgram Evaluatin Schl psychlgists have knwledge f research design, statistics, measurement, varied data cllectin and analysis techniques, and prgram evaluatin methds sufficient fr understanding research and interpreting data in applied settings. Schl psychlgists demnstrate skills t evaluatin and apply research as a fundatin fr service delivery and, in cllabratin with thers, use varius techniques and technlgy resurces fr data cllectin, measurement, analysis, and prgram evaluatin t supprt effective practices at the individual, grup, and/r systems level Legal, Ethical, and Prfessinal Schl psychlgists have knwledge f the histry and fundatins f schl psychlgy; multiple service mdels and methds; ethical, legal,

6 and prfessinal standards; and ther factrs related t prfessinal identity and effective practice as schl psychlgists. Schl psychlgists demnstrate skills t prvide services cnsistent with ethical, legal, and prfessinal standards; engage in respnsive ethical and prfessinal decisin-making; cllabrate with ther prfessinals; and apply prfessinal wrk characteristics needed fr effective practice as schl psychlgists, including respect fr human diversity and scial justice, cmmunicatin skills, effective interpersnal skills, respnsibility, adaptability, initiative, dependability, and technlgy skills. Organizing the Prtfli: Selectin f Exemplars within Dmains Exemplars may include assessment reprts, prfessinal papers, presentatins, prducts such as brchures r newsletters, and summary tables, graphs, r matrices. Exemplars shuld be selective and reflect best wrk. Additinal sectins shuld be included: A persnal preamble r missin statement A resume r vita that reflects prir training/experience and current preparatin When apprpriate, a summary describing hw previus experiences helped t shape yur emerging identity as a schl psychlgist Additinal Infrmatin that culd be included in the Prtfli: Student pre- and pst-internship self-analyses f prfessinal cmpetencies (self evaluatin) Field facilitatr/ internship supervisr evaluatin f student cmpetencies Evidence f participatin in prfessinal develpment activities (attendance at wrkshps, cnferences, and presentatins; presentatins at wrkshps, cnferences, parent grups) Evidence f prfessinal leadership (e.g., psitins held, service n cmmittee) Transcript(s) f all graduate wrk t date at KSU and ther universities Praxis Exam Scre Letters f thanks/recgnitin (e.g., frm internship field facilitatr, principals, supervisrs, special educatin persnnel, parents) Hnrs/Awards/Recgnitins Selected, wrk-fcused phtgraphs (with apprpriate permissin) Shwcase any special skills/fci (e.g. cmputer skills, behaviral interventins, early childhd emphasis)
