Graduates f bth prgrams qualify fr Illinis Early Childhd Teacher Certificatin (birth thrugh grade three 0 certificatin). The prgram thrugh the Department f Special and Early Childhd Educatin als qualifies fr Illinis Preschl Special Educatin Apprval t teach students with special needs frm birth thrugh six years f age. IMPORTANT NOTE: Illinis Prfessinal Teaching Standards (IPTS), including Cmmn Cre Standards that apply t the teaching f students, are in the prcess f being revised. There will be curricular changes t NIU s early childhd educatin prgrams, nce new state standards have been finalized. Students under current standards will need t cmplete their prgram n r befre September 1, 2019 r change t the revised curriculum. Transfer Optins AA r AS Degree - Transfer students wh receive an AA r an AS degree frm an Illinis public cmmunity cllege, have nt previusly attended NIU, are in gd standing at the last cllege attended, and have a cumulative GPA f 2.00 r higher are guaranteed the fllwing: Minimum f 60 semester hurs in transfer credit Junir status Lwer divisin NIU General Educatin requirements satisfied (The Early Childhd majr requires specific curses.) Illinis Articulatin Initiative - Transfer students wh enter NIU as first time students with the IAI General Educatin Cre Curriculum (IAI GECC) cmpleted are cnsidered t have cmpleted NIU s general educatin requirements. The Early Childhd majr requires specific curses. Fr students wh transfer prir t cmpleting an AA r an AS degree r the IAI cre: NIU credit can be transferred back t MCC fr cmpletin f the AA r the AS degree. Ask yur MCC advisr abut the Reverse Transfer Agreement partnership. If nly a prtin f the IAI GECC is cmpleted upn transfer, NIU will evaluate n a curse by curse basis t see hw each curse fits int NIU s General Educatin. Admissin t Early Childhd Studies Prgrams Students must be admitted t Nrthern Illinis University and als apply fr admissin t the department that hlds the early childhd prgram f interest. 2 Students must be admitted t an Early Childhd Studies prgram befre enrlling in its first prfessinal semester. Pre-admissin requirements (Bth prgrams cmbined accept up t 60 students per year.) Admissin t the prgram is cmpetitive based n the GPA in wrk taken at NIU and/r transferred frm ther institutins, the quality f the applicatin essay, and successful experience wrking with yung children. A student wh has cmpleted the fllwing requirements is eligible t apply t ne f the emphases in the majr in early childhd studies, but satisfying the requirements des nt guarantee admissin. Overall GPA f at least 2.50 n a.00 scale as calculated by NIU. Fr repeat curses, the grade fr the last curse taken is used in the calculatin. Applicatin deadlines (Department f Special and Early Childhd Educatin and Schl f Family, Cnsumer, and Nutritin): March 1 Fall admit nly. The March 1 deadline is fr cmpleted applicatins. Students must have admissin requirements cmpleted by December prir t applicatin. Early applicatin t NIU is encuraged. All required dcuments must be n file in the apprpriate department listed abve by the deadline, including prf shwing successful cmpletin f the Illinis Test f Academic Prficiency (TAP) r ACT Plus Writing (with Cmpsite Scre f 22 r higher and minimum f 19 in Cmbined English/Writing), prf f tuberculsis testing, and dcumented resume f successful wrk experiences with children birth t age 8. Pre-admissin curse requirements: Must be cmpleted with a C r better prir t applicatin: ENG151, 152; SPE151; PSY151; PSY251 r ECE120 and tw f the fllwing curses with a C r better: MAT201 & 202; HIS170 r 172; EDU255. The remaining curses are nt required befre the first prfessinal semester but are required fr graduatin. It is highly recmmended that MAT201 & 202 be cmpleted at least befre the first prfessinal semester. MAT201 & 202 cunt as ne NIU curse. Admissin t the selected emphasis is cntingent n cmpleting the fllwing prerequisites with a grade f C r better prir t entering the first prfessinal semester: Emphasis in 0 certificatin ffered by the Schl f Family, Cnsumer and Nutritin Science: BIO110 r 157; SOC175; EDU25; MAT120 r 220; and CDM (NIU ffers a cmpetency based exam as an ptin.) Emphasis in 0 certificatin with preschl special educatin apprval ffered by the Department f Special and Early Childhd Educatin: bilgical science; physical science (see chart fr 0 certificatin with preschl special educatin fr ptins); SOC175; PSY265; EDU25; and CDM (NIU ffers a cmpetency based exam as an ptin.) Additinal Infrmatin Grade requirement - A grade f C r better is necessary fr all cursewrk required fr a teaching certificate degree prgram. This requirement includes general educatin and prfessinal curses. GPA Calculatin Repeated curses fr which a grade f C r better was earned in the first attempt will nt be calculated int the admissin GPA r be accepted fr transfer credit. If D r F curses are repeated, the secnd attempt nly will be utilized in calculating the GPA. Certain majrs require special admissin grading plicies. Maximum hurs frm a cmmunity cllege - Up t 66 academic semester hurs frm a cmmunity cllege and semester hurs f physical educatin activity credits may be applied tward a degree at NIU. Catalg Rule - Students may chse the NIU catalg which was in effect when they became freshmen at their riginal schl r any later NIU catalg, prviding they were enrlled during the catalg year f their chice. The catalg year must nt precede enrllment at NIU by mre than three years. Students may elect t satisfy all graduatin requirements frm a single catalg r majr and minr requirements frm ne and general educatin requirements frm a secnd.
