2 Pst- Baccalaureate Accunting Certificate (PBAC) Advising Guide Welcme t the PSU Schl f Business Administratin! This bklet is intended as an verview f recmmendatins and requirements necessary fr successful cmpletin f the Pst- Baccalaureate Accunting Certificate (PBAC) Prgram. The PBAC is an excellent prgram fr students wh already have a bachelr s degree and wish t pursue a career in accunting. Cursewrk fr the PBAC is equivalent t the 5 th year requirement t sit fr the CPA exam, and represents an intensive curse f study in accunting. Applicatin Criteria The fllwing steps shuld be taken in rder t start the PBAC: Have earned a baccalaureate degree recgnized by the PSU Office f Admissins and Recrds. 1. Be frmally admitted t PSU as a pst- baccalaureate (PB) undergraduate. ( applicant) 2. After being admitted t PSU, e- mail yur assigned academic advisr in the SBA t request that yur transcripts be evaluated fr curses t be used twards the PBAC. a. career- advising b. Please include yur name, PSU ID#, and that yu are ding the PBAC and need yur transcripts evaluated. 3. Opt- in t the Schl f Business nline at pdx.edu/sba/pt- in. Befre being allwed t take 200, 300 r 400 level business classes, yu must pt- in t the Schl f Business. 4. The fllwing curses are required prerequisites fr BA303, BA325 and ACTG curses; hwever, they d nt cunt twards the 48 credits required fr the PBAC. They must be cmpleted with a grade f C- r better; P/NP grades are nt accepted. BA 211 Fundamentals f Financial Accunting (4) BA 213 Decisin Making with Accunting Infrmatin (4) STAT241- Applied Statistics fr Business Majrs (4) *STAT 243 can be substituted* EC 201, 202 Principles f Ecnmics (Micr & Macr) (4, 4) Prerequisite nte: BA 101 & 205 are nt required fr pst baccalaureate students. BA 101 is a prerequisite fr BA 211. Please cntact the Schl f Business Undergraduate Prgrams Office at t receive a registratin verride fr BA 211 if yu plan t take BA 211 at PSU. Transfer credits: Please be mindful that curse numbers and titles vary by institutin. Fr example, students taking the abve curses at Prtland Cmmunity Cllege need BA 211, 212, and 213 t fulfill PSU s BA 211 and 213. The Office f Admissins has a Transfer Curse Equivalency System that shuld be referenced prir t taking curses at ther intuitins t fulfill requirements at Prtland State University. Imprtant Nte: WR 323, Junir Level English Cmpsitin, is required fr any PBAC student whse first degree is frm an institutin where English is nt the primary language f instructin. Nte: Students wh received an accunting degree utside the United States may earn the accunting certificate. Students wh received an accunting degree in the United States are nt eligible t earn an accunting certificate. 3

3 Certificate Requirements At least 30 f the 48 credits required fr the certificate and at least 27 credits in accunting must be taken in residence at PSU. Candidates must achieve a grade f C- r higher in each curse required fr the PBAC. A minimum prgram GPA f 2.5 is required fr retaining admissin t the SBA. This class prepares students fr the accunting mechanics (debits and credits) vital t success in the upper divisin curses. ACTG 281 is a ne credit class ffered every quarter, n a pass/n pass basis. 4 SBA Admissin Admissin t the Schl f Business is required in rder t btain a Pst- Baccalaureate Accunting Certificate. Students shuld pt- in t the Schl f Business as sn as they have been admitted t Prtland State University. Students must have pted in t the SBA t gain: Exclusive access t 200, 300 and 400- level business curses Access t SBA schlarships, internships and jb pstings Opt- in t the Schl f Business nline at: in. Yu must be admitted t PSU as a pst- baccalaureate undergraduate befre pting in t the Schl f Business. Registratin Prerequisites: The Schl f Business Administratin strngly enfrces curse prerequisites. Students attempting t register fr curses ut f sequence will be prevented by the cmputer registratin system. Prerequisites fr business curses are included in curse descriptins nline, and are subject t change each fall. Imprtant nte: The registratin system will nt allw yu t register fr certain business curses if yu tk the prerequisite class at anther schl r if the prerequisite was waived. T avid this prblem, e- mail yur advisr at any time befre yur assigned registratin date fr a prerequisite verride, which allws yu t register nline fr the curses yu specify n pst baccalaureate registratin day. Be sure t include the fllwing infrmatin in yur e- mail: yur name, PSU student ID number, which classes yu intend t register fr, and during which term. We may ask yu fr phtcpies f yur academic recrds frm prir institutins if these recrds are nt already in ur files, as we may need t verify cmpletin f curse prerequisites. Waitlists and Class Attendance Can Be Critical: Demand fr business classes is high and thse classes fill quickly. Pay clse attentin t the directins fr adding yurself t a waitlist via the web. Students are admitted frm the wait list in the rder in which they registered, and nly if there is available rm in the class. If yu are n the waitlist fr a class, watch yur PSU clsely as yu may be allwed t add befre the term begins if space allws. Yu must attend the first week f class t determine if yu will be allwed t frmally add the class if yu d nt receive the prir t the term. Only the instructr can make this determinatin. Please nte: If yu are fully registered and fail t attend the first week f class and have nt received special permissin frm yur instructr, yu may risk lsing yur seat t smene n the waitlist. Grades GPA is the primary factr in staying admitted t the SBA. Once yu have been admitted t the SBA, yu must maintain a minimum GPA f 2.5 in all PSU business classes and all PSU nn business classes. If either yur PSU business r PSU GPA falls belw a 2.5, yu will be placed n academic prbatin. If yu are placed n prbatin and fail t restre bth GPAs t at least 2.5 within three terms, yu will be academically disqualified frm the SBA, and must raise bth yur PSU Business GPA and PSU GPA t a 2.50 t re- apply t the SBA.
