1 NEW FUTURES APPLICATION Guidelines fr Applicants These schlarships will finance thse pursuing pst-secndary educatin f the fllwing types: Students wh are applying t pst-secndary vcatinal certificate prgrams, either at specialized vcatinal schls r at cmmunity clleges. The schlarships will finance 90% f the nn-financed balance up t a ttal f $12,800 fr tuitin and ther dcumented expenses fr prgram attendance. Students wh are applying t cmmunity cllege in rder t btain an assciate s (2-year) degree r as the first step twards a bachelr s (4-year) degree. (These schlars are eligible t apply fr a secnd New Futures schlarship if they wish t cntinue their educatin after successfully cmpleting their 2-year prgram.) The schlarships will finance up t $1,600 per full-time semester fr cllege attendance if needed after ther financial aid is applied. (Funding fr part-time attendance will be prrated based n number f credits being taken.) TO BE ELIGIBLE Yu must have been a participant at ne f New Futures partner cmmunity rganizatins fr at least six mnths. Yu must be between the ages f Yu must be a current student, newly accepted student r have a pending applicatin at a vcatinal schl, cmmunity cllege, r a fur-year cllege r university. Yu must have a GED r high schl diplma r be n track t btain yur high schl diplma within three mnths f the applicatin date. Yu must have demnstrated financial need. Yu must have a viable educatinal and financial plan. SELECTION CRITERIA Academic perfrmance (we cnsider grades, GED test scres, cmmitment t learning, and wrk ethic) Clarity and quality f educatinal and career plan Will t succeed (determinatin and perseverance in the face f challenges, ability t set and remain fcused n gals and t put in the effrt needed t meet thse gals in the face f bstacles) Willingness and ability t seek help when needed Level f financial need (These schlarships are intended fr students wh clearly d nt have the resurces t finance their educatin withut substantial financial supprt. Students must als apply fr all ther frms f financial aid fr which he r she may be eligible (with the FAFSA frm and the DC One App r ther apprpriate state frm). Ability t cmmunicate effectively The applicatins will be submitted t a Selectin Cmmittee that will review them and then schedule in-persn interviews fr the finalists. The interview will fcus n the applicant s experience and plans fr future educatin. Partner rganizatins are t submit 7 cpies f all cmpleted applicatins t New Futures, 1965 Biltmre Street, NW, Washingtn, DC by Octber 7 (fr fall submissins) and by April 8 (fr spring submissins). This is a firm date; applicatins will nt be accepted after the date has passed. All applicatins must be cmplete and include the fllwing supplemental materials: Current High Schl transcript r GED diplma and test scres. If the student is already enrlled in pst-secndary educatin, a current cumulative transcript must be included. If the student has 30 r fewer cllege credits, the high schl transcript r GED scres must als be included. Expectatins and Respnsibilities f the Schlar Participatin in New Futures activities: Selected schlars are expected t attend a Schlar Award Lunchen r Dinner (usually held 2-4 weeks after the schlarships are annunced) and t participate in 1-2 New Schlar Wrkshps as invited. Maintaining a relatinship with the partner rganizatin: It is required that each schlar have substantive cntact with his r her mentr at least six times per year, t review the schlar s prgress and t discuss any cncerns r issues the schlar may have. It is hped that at least ne f these meetings be cnducted face-t-face each year. Maintaining a relatinship with the cllege financial aid ffice: It is expected that the schlar will practively find ut all that is required f him r her t receive any available gvernment r schl financial aid each semester. Withdrawing schlarship funds: In rder t receive payment fr educatin-related expenses, schlars must submit invices and transcripts in a timely manner t their spnsring rganizatin with sufficient time t prcess requests. Maintaining attendance: Schlars must begin their prgrams within ne year f receiving their schlarship and must maintain attendance. If a schlar takes time ff frm studying fr mre than 2 cnsecutive semesters (r ne year), their schlarship may be terminated. If special circumstances exist, schlarship cntinuance will be cnsidered if a letter f explanatin is received frm the spnsring rganizatin. T be cnsidered t be actively attending schl, a student must be taking at least 2 classes in a given semester. Maintaining gd grades: Shuld schlars receive semester grades with less than a 2.0 grade pint average, he r she will be cnsidered t be n schlastic prbatin fr ne semester. If the schlar fails t achieve a 2.0 GPA in the subsequent semester, New Futures and the spnsring rganizatin will terminate the schlarship. At the end f each semester, and at the end f a prgram, schlars must submit a cpy f their cumulative transcript t the spnsring rganizatin. Maintaining cntact: Upn cmpletin f the prgram, schlars will be cntacted n a few ccasins t btain infrmatin regarding the use f their educatins and advice they may have fr future schlars. Schlars are expected t participate in these brief telephne interviews in rder t assist with future imprvements t the schlarship prgram.
