2 The Tampa Watersports Festival, 2015 Mayor s Cup Regatta: The Mayor s Cup is one of the preeminent early-season rowing events featuring many of the top crews and athletes from around the country. With its inaugural event in 1975 as The University of Tampa s President s Cup Regatta, the races have become a key training event for many of the top universities and high schools such as The United States National Team, Yale, Dartmouth, Marietta, Temple, and The Kent School. While Tampa has long been the home to rowing with The University of Tampa beginning its program in 1941, as well as many top collegiate, and Olympic crews making Tampa their home for spring training, this spectator oriented event presents a unique opportunity for the local business community, future collegiate athletes and sports enthusiasts to participate in and witness competition at its highest level. The races take place in Downtown Tampa s Seddon Channel between Harbor and Davis Islands. Unlike many other rowing events, spectators will be able to watch nearly all parts of the competition from mid race battling for position to an all out sprint for the finish line where the difference between first and last may be a few meters. Spectator areas include Tampa General Park near the finish line, Hillsborough Community College (HCC) near the mid-point and Marjorie Park Marina. The race can also be seen along Channel Drive on Davis Island, as well as the west side of Harbor Island. The Competitors Collegiate crews typically use this event to gauge the level of competition for the upcoming season. The crews competing in this regatta will likely include future Olympic and world championship crews. In addition to the collegiate level competition, the regatta will also feature high school and middle schools, along with a highly competitive masters category.

4 The Gasparilla SUP Invasion Sunday, March 22nd 2015 The second day of the Tampa Watersports Festival, Sunday March 22, will feature The Gasparilla SUP Invasion which includes events for stand up paddle boards, dragon boats, and kayaks. Based on previous regattas, organizers estimate there will be over 2,000 spectators, athletes, and volunteers to gather along the banks of the river throughout the weekend. The fastest growing sport in Florida just got faster! The excitement of Gasparilla just got bigger! Be a part of Tampa History as a participant or reveler in the Inaugural Gasparilla SUP Invasion. Race events take place along the beautiful waterways of downtown Tampa, launching from Davis Islands. Race divisions include elite, recreational and kids. See top athletes compete in this live MC'd sporting event featuring food trucks, vendors and beer garden offering full spirits. Race Headquarters are located adjacent to Hillsborough Community College (HCC), Columbia Dr., Davis Island. The Elite 6 mile race consists of 2 laps around a 3 mile course that takes you through the urban waterways of downtown Tampa. This scenic course starts and finishes at Seddon Channel. Paddle by Tampa landmarks like the University of Tampa, the Tampa Art Museum, Curtis Hixon Park, and Tampa s brand new River Walk. In 2015, racers, sponsors and spectators alike will Beat Cancer with a Paddle in Honor of Arnie Goodman. Dr. Arnie Goodman founded and ran the annual Paddle for a Cure race on the Hillsborough River in Tampa, raising awareness and more than $200,000 towards the research and treatment of multiple myeloma. Arnie was a health enthusiast and a respected physician admired for his caring nature and contributions to his community. He helped support others diagnosed with the same incurable disease that he suffered in the latter years of his life, until his passing in July of For this 2015 tribute to Arnie's legacy, a portion of all proceeds from the event will go to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.

5 Tampa Watersports Festival Organizers, The Stewards Foundation As mentioned before, The University of Tampa started its rowing program in In 1984 the University planned to discontinue this program, so The Steward s Foundation was formed to save and foster the sport of rowing in the Tampa Bay area. Founding Stewards include community visionaries such as Fred Leary, Finn Casperson, Van McNeel, Fred Bullard and William Krusen Sr. The Foundation was granted tax exempt status (501 3) in Its first project was the McNeel Boathouse at The University of Tampa, a 12,000 square foot facility with boat/equipment storage, dormitories and meeting rooms. The McNeel Boathouse became a bustling home for the University s rowing program as well as numerous visiting crews and local high schools with many young athletes pursuing collegiate scholarships and athletic aspirations. The Foundation had largely achieved its mission until the fall of 2003 when the University announced that it could no longer accommodate visiting teams and local high schools in its boathouse. The local rowing community was once again in peril. As a result, the Foundation again rose to the occasion and identified a new site at Julian Lane Riverfront Park a short distance from the previous location and adjacent to Tampa Preparatory School. With generous assistance of the Foundation s benefactors, the Stewards secured the site from the City of Tampa and built a temporary boathouse and training facility. The facility, although temporary, is home to numerous high school rowing programs, learn to row programs and inner city community programs. Collectively these programs introduced hundreds of our community s youth to an elite athletic sport rich in tradition, numerous scholarship opportunities and the principles of team work. The Foundation is currently pursuing plans to build a much larger permanent facility that will continue to provide unparalleled opportunities through the sport of rowing.
