2 WHAT IS DRAGON BOAT RACING The sport dates back more than 2,000 years where it began on China's Mi-Lo river at about 400 BC. Today, with over one million teams competing worldwide it is the second most popular sport on the planet. Dragon boats are long, elaborately decorated canoes with a dragon's head and tail attached. There are wooden benches for the crew as well as room at the bow for the drummer and a space at the stern for the steersperson, known as a helm, to stand. It caters for all ages in one crew, male and female. The sport organisers provide all the boats, instruction, flotation aids and safety systems. THE CHALLENGE The second Bewdley Rotary Dragon Boat Festival is taking place on Sunday 30 th August 2015 on the river Severn at Bewdley, launching from and hosted by Bewdley Rowing Club when teams taking part will be racing for fun and to raise funds for their favourite charities, both national and local. The Dragon Boat Festival is open to everyone and lots of teams are expected to battle it out over the 250m race course, watched by a large number of spectators. With plentiful parking close by, great facilities - all day bar and bbq, toilets and changing rooms and ample river frontage for viewing the racing, Bewdley Rowing Club offers a superb venue for the Festival. No previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit! CREWS Crews must comprise of a maximum of 16 paddlers plus a drummer. Minimum age 12. Crews can be mixed, all female or all male and organisations may enter more than one crew. All crew members must be comfortable in water wearing an approved personal flotation device (buoyancy aid) which will be supplied to all participants who compete entirely at their own risk. Qualified helms, buoyancy aids and water safety cover are provided by the organisers. DRAGON BOAT EVENTS The day's racing will be organised by Dragon Boat Events. With over twenty years experience, they will provide everything required for a great day: boats, paddles, steersmen (helms), safety boats and equipment, racing commentary and full insurance cover. 3 PRIZES FOR TEAMS To add to the fun, teams, if they wish, can come in fancy dress (Pirates, St. Trinians, Vikings etc.) The first three teams. The best dressed team. The winning team will receive the Bewdley Rotary Dragon Boat Festival Trophy, as well as medals. ENTRY COST The fees for charities, voluntary groups and companies are as follows. Charity or Voluntary Group The entry fee is 425 including a 150 non-refundable deposit. In addition, the team will be required to do some fundraising. This represents an entry cost per team member of 25, based on 16 plus the drummer. Great value for a great fun day and if your team is more than 17, maximum 20, as the team entry cost is capped at 425 the entry cost per person could be as low as If you cannot raise a full team, don t worry, you can still race. Pay your 25 entry fee in advance and we will make up your team with others, on the day. Company There are two options: 1. An entry fee of v.a.t. including a 150 non-refundable deposit. In addition, the team will be required to do some fundraising. 2. An entry fee of v.a.t. including a 250 non-refundable deposit, of which 425 is a donation to charities supported by the Rotary Club of Bewdley. Any additional fundraising by the team goes to charities of your choice. LOCATION The Bewdley Rotary Dragon Boat Festival will take place on the River Severn at Bewdley Rowing Club premises which are situated 200 metres upstream of the town bridge opposite the town side. The course will be approx. 250 metres, finishing at the Club's launching steps. DATE AND TIME Sunday 30 th August Racing will start at 11am, with prize giving at around 4pm. Page 3
4 Please arrive at 10am, to give time for boat launching and instruction. Teams Up to 30 teams can compete on the day, with 16 people plus one drummer in each boat. Ideally each team should have 20 people so that different people can race throughout the day. The minimum age for a team member is 12 years. Fund Raising/Sponsorship Dragon Boat Racing is all about having fun while fundraising for your selected charity. THIS IS HOW IT WORKS A sponsorship form is included in each entry pack. Each team prints off as many sponsorship forms as each team member needs. Money is collected and the sponsors details are noted on the form. Name, address, post code and ticked gift aid box are essential for Gift Aid. All monies raised by competing teams will be retained by them for their own charities or good causes. The completed forms are passed to Bewdley Rotary Club who are registered with HMRC for gift aid collection. The forms are submitted and the gift aid (25%) is retained by Bewdley Rotary for its own charities. If every team member were to collect just 5 from each of 20 friends and colleagues, then a 12 team event would raise more than 20,000! The gift aid element would add a further Some well-established dragon boat events, often run by the local Rotary Club, have the ability to raise more than 100,000 in sponsorship This is why dragon boat events are so popular, nationally, with groups and individuals who want to make a difference in their community. By all means raise money for a high profile national charity, but if your local junior sports team needs help getting new equipment, or your church needs a new roof, then get paddling and get it for them. 5 Charities supported by the Rotary Club of Bewdley The Rotary Club of Bewdley supports a broad range of projects both local and international. International projects range from charities such as Water Aid, Mercy Ships and Polio eradication plus regularly purchasing Shelter and Aqua boxes to be sent to disaster areas around the world. On the home front, we have supported The Bewdley Youth Cafe, the Odell Centre Kidderminster and Acorns Children s' Hospice, plus sponsoring local young people to travel abroad on charity work. We provide a dictionary to every local primary school leaver and we supply, erect and remove Bewdley's Christmas tree every year!
