7 Preface Private universities are the fastest growing segment of Indian higher education. The number of private universities has gone up from 73 to 191 over the past five years. The private universities that incude State Private Universities (SPU) and Deemed Private Universities (DPU) are now amost one-third of the tota number of universities in the country. They outnumber centra universities / institutes and enro a far arger number of students compared to the centra institutions. They have not ony added a significant enroment capacity, but brought in much innovation and diversity in the country's higher education provision. Whie, most of the private universities are teaching-focussed and offer professiona programmes in engineering and management, severa of them are now increasingy focussing on research and offer programmes in ibera arts, basic sciences and education. They focus on inter-discipinary teaching and research, and provide their facuty opportunities and resources for professiona deveopment. They are aso most pro-active in internationa coaborations and student exchange programmes with universities abroad. They cosey work with industry and businesses to provide experientia and project based earning opportunities to students and rea-ife research probems to facuty. The private universities have been at the forefront in use of technoogy for university management and even in the cassroom. Severa of them are hiring facuty from top universities around the word and have deveoped good academic environment. They have adopted innovative methods and strategies to achieve quaity and scae. Thus, the private universities have made the country's higher education environment, dynamic and vibrant. Handbook of Private Universities in India This Handbook of Private Universities in India, 2012 reeased on the occasion of the FICCI Higher Education Summit, 2012 is aimed at creating a community of private universities in the country to enabe them to work together and earn from each other for deveopment of higher education in the country. This year's edition of the handbook compies basic information about programmes offered, students, staff and innovative practices by them. Going forward, the handbook woud have a detaied anaysis of the information obtained to identify specific trends and patterns, areas of focus, issues and chaenges etc. Over time, this handbook woud become a singe-point source to inform the private universities about each other and other stakehoders about the growing diversity and innovation in the private university system in the country. Despite, short notice, we were abe to get response from about one-third of the private universities, which has been compied in this voume. This wi aso be posted on the FICCI website and updated from time to time, so that it becomes an ongoing process. The information contained in the handbook is based on the data furnished by the universities themseves. We gratefuy acknowedge support received from Garima Batra of Shiv Nadar University in deveoping the survey instrument and the FICCI team for the compiation of the information received. We have coaborative agreements with some of the best Universities abroad and facuty exchange is one of the terms of the agreement. We impress upon the facuty that teaching without research is meaningess and encourage them to do more research. The curricuum of certain University programmes wi engage the students in rea word projects with the industry, are sociay driven and reevant, starting from the first year of engineering education. To achieve this, we require exceent facuty of internationa repute and meritorious and motivated students. We are aways open to recruit good facuty both from India and abroad. We are persuading the Gujarat Government to aow us to seect our students ony on the basis of merit. Teaching without research is meaningess. A tutor guardian appointed for every 20 students with frequency of interaction at east three time in a week. A cass mentor for every cass, monitors speciay poor performing students in the cass. A feed back and performance anaysis by Head and Dean every month based on tests, attendance and reports from cass mentors and tutor guardian. A one is to one communication with guardians every month by HOD Dean / Counseing Ce. (2) SAC (Student Activity Counci) has been made very effective to ensure hoistic deveopment of students. SAC is responsibe to organise a co curricuar/extra curricuar sporting and cutura events. The eectives give a strong bias towards functiona areas and make the students to fit into jobs with the necessary knowedge and skis. Emphasis is given on an a-round deveopment of the student with embeishments of soft skis and sef-study. The students are exposed to practica industry environment through the internship program and their consoidation for the knowedge is done in a dissertation project. The course work is revised once in two years by both the Governing Counci and the Academic counci, and modification if any is impemented to make the course more reevant to the industry requirements. c.
