My mom and dad made sure my brother, my sister and i were a in arts and music because it heps us in other casses, connects us with our cuture and unites our famiy. i ike heping my students conquer the critica areas of math because it was Agebra that infuenced me to go into engineering. We provided our students with an oncampus fied trip where groups of professionas from business, heath and other sectors taked about what it takes to get into their fied. My son s teacher knows our anguage. He heped us find afterschoo biingua tutors in our area. He shared a weeky progress report and ceebrated when my son met his goas. Two of my students gained confidence after their theater performance and started a spoken word contest at the schoo that now runs district wide! i fee good knowing that my chid attends a schoo where he can be physicay active and engage in safe, supervised pay. 6 everychid. onevoice. i don t know where i woud be today without the AViD program. it heped me see that graduation is possibe. i have mentors and tutors who push me to work hard and beieve in mysef. i m a science teacher and we ve deveoped hands on projects so that students find the curricuum reevant. The bottom ine is, students cannot earn when they are not in their seats. My daughter says she comes to schoo for the music cass. STATE PRioRiTy AREA: ENGAGEMENT Student Engagement Student engagement means providing students with programs, course work and opportunities both in and out of the cassroom that motivates them and keeps them in schoo. Research further shows that when students are heathy in mind and body, they are more engaged, miss ess schoo, focus better in cass, and are more ikey to graduate. Different types of teaching methods can aso keep more students engaged. Students ook forward to attending schoo when they fee a community of caring aduts and peers support their success. The PTA Schoo Smarts program heped me do homework with my mom and dad and just have a ot of fun. i knew the importance of connecting with parents from the start. Kids succeed when their parents are empowered aies and hepers. i reached out through weeky newsetters sent home with the kids. i set up meetings with them at home. i gave them ideas for working with their chidren and information about earning deveopment stages for a kids. 8 everychid. onevoice. i never thought anyone at schoo noticed if i was there or not, but one day i got asked why i was absent from cass and it made me fee ike someone cared about me. We decided as a staff to make it a practice of greeting a students when they waked into the cassroom, and notice something about each of them. My son was being buied and it turned into a fight. The principa brought us parents, our chidren and their cass together. We taked unti we got to the root of the probem. Teachers received training to ook out for students experiencing troubes at home and buying behavior, and how to use suspension or expusion as a ast resort. This incudes student heath, safety and discipine as we as how connected a students fee to their schoo. Every chid is entited to a safe and peacefu environment that promotes earning. A students shoud fee respected, incuded, sociay and emotionay cared for, and expected to succeed. Teachers, administrators, schoo staff, parents, students and community members must work together to create such environments on a campuses.
