2 Wecome Wecome to the Schoo of Education and Lifeong Learning at Aberystwyth University. Over 100 years ago, Aberystwyth was the first university in Engand and Waes to offer an honours degree in Education. Now Education is studied as honours degrees with a variety of other subjects and we have expanded our portfoio to incude a singe honours degree in Chidhood Studies. Most recenty, an innovative and inspiring BA (Honours) Education and Internationa Deveopment scheme has been deveoped to engage with the increasingy important roe of education in goba deveopment and aid.

3 Education and Internationa Deveopment UCAS Code: In an ever changing word, with the accessibiity of news and information, there is an increasing acknowedgement of the significance of the roe of education in deveopment, be it in deveoped or deveoping countries. Education impacts upon the successfu impementation of socia and governmenta poicies and programmes throughout the word and can contribute significanty towards socia cohesion, pubic resiience, individua and community deveopment and the estabishment of rights and we-being. It impacts aso in the onger term on the reduction of poverty, improved economic growth and better heath and we being. This innovative and exciting degree scheme is aimed at those whose interests ie in using Education as a means for community and socia deveopment from a goba perspective. If you wish to work in charitabe organisations, non-government organisations overseas, in educationa poicy-making bodies, in advisory roes and in practica, socia deveopment situations then this is an idea pathway for you, providing the academic background but aso the practica experience needed. Pacement An essentia and important part of the degree scheme wi be a stimuating 7 week (minimum) pacement in the second year which wi provide a practica and inspiring perspective on the theoretica and critica debates discussed in the coege based sessions. Content and Structure The fu time duration of this course is three years and your pacement wi be incorporated within this time. For further detais on these and other modues, visit our website: Year 1 An Introduction to Peope and Partnerships This is a persona deveopment modue that aims to estabish good academic skis at the commencement of the period of study, and aso deveop an understanding of your empoyabiity skis and aspirations within the degree scheme. You wi gain an opportunity to engage in sef refection, action panning and reviewing and to deveop key academic and transferabe skis. of computer-based games wi be used to exempify various deveopment scenarios and there wi be a two day residentia Internationa Deveopment Congress where you wi be invoved with group roe-pay and rea-ife simuation. A centra feature of this modue is the emphasis on the skis of cooperating with others, advocacy, deegation, istening, sharing ideas and persuasion; skis centra to the panning and deivery of internationa aid. An Introduction to Goba Education Goba issues in education wi be considered by first identifying key concepts used in internationa educationa poicy and practice. The definitions of education across the word and the roe of educators are expored in ight of historica, socioogica and poitica perspectives. The modue considers current concerns in education across the word, as we as identifying future trends and chaenges. Introduction to Internationa Deveopment Here you wi be introduced to internationa deveopment and consider what constitutes deveoped and deveoping countries. The modue wi expore gobaization and growth, inequaity and poverty and how they are inked with deveopment. The use Year 2 Effective Professiona Practice This modue wi provide the theoretica and practica basis for progression on to the core pacement modue. You wi consider the theoretica and academic basis for earning

5 in a work environment, and wi be equipped to refect upon experiences for deveopment purposes and engage with practica methodoogies for recording and anaysing experiences. Competing this modue wi equip you with the theoretica and practica knowedge and skis required to effectivey and succesfuy undertake a work pacement in the fied of education and internationa deveopment. aim to deveop your awareness of the issues associated with different methodoogica choices and guide you in the panning of a sma scae research project. This modue wi be offered as a fu onine provision when you are on pacement and you wi be given access to tutor guidance and support eectronicay. Year 3 Major Dissertation This modue wi provide you with an opportunity to investigate a topic of your own choice, in consutation with members of staff. It invoves independent study under the guidance and supervision of an academic tutor. It wi enabe you to engage with wide reading, eading to an extended essay. It requires ibrary-based study and typicay invoves sma-scae empirica investigation. Pacement Modue This modue wi enabe you to engage in a minimum seven week pacement in an organisation reated to Education or Internationa Deveopment. This wi give you an unique perspective on the appication of theory in practica situations and wi deveop your earning regarding the methods and practices of probem soving and decision making in a rea ife situation. Research Methods This modue wi provide an introduction to a range of research methods commony empoyed in educationa research. It wi aso Internationa Deveopment and Practice Initiay this modue wi review the Miennium Deveopment goas and the targets inked to environmenta sustainabiity and goba partnership for deveopment. You wi proceed to consider chaenges and goas of invovement in internationa aid. To examine this further the internationa aid and deveopment poicies for the UK wi be considered. You wi further consider the core roe that education pays in providing peope with the knowedge, understanding and skis for ife and work and wi examine the need to improve the education of girs and women, since they have the greatest infuence on chidren s heath, education and opportunities. Extensive case studies of internationa deveopment projects and how assistance is given to countries to dea with humanitarian emergencies wi be considered.

6 How to Appy Entry requirements We encourage appications from peope with a variety of backgrounds in the Schoo of Education and Lifeong Learning. If you are a mature student, who is returning to forma eduaction after a break, or you are currenty studying for A eves, a CACHE Dipoma or a Foundation Degree, you wi benefit from our courses. The standard academic entry requirements incude A eves, doube award (and/or AS eves), Scottish Highers, Wesh Baccaaureate, Internationa Baccaaureate or the Irish Leaving Certificate, as we as BTECs and CACHE Dipomas. Our standard entry requirements are: Education and Internationa Deveopment: 280 UCAS points A appicants are required to have at east a C in GCSE eve Engish or equivaent. Internationa appicants who do not possess this wi usuay be asked to achieve a score of 6.5 in ELTS or equivaent. BTEC HND/C candidates woud normay be expected to offer 50% Distinctions and 50% merits. Candidates offering BTEC HND/C (18 units) woud normay require a distinction in the majority of units. Schoarships, Bursaries and Awards The Schoarships, Bursaries and Awards offered at Aberystwyth are amongst the most vauabe and extensive avaiabe at any British University. Our awards provide vauabe financia support to ensure that students of a backgrounds can enjoy the benefits of higher education. Coeg Cymraeg Cenedaetho Schoarships The Coeg Cymraeg Cenedaetho is an independent body, with responibiities for panning and funding Wesh medium provision within the entire higher education sector in Waes. The Coeg offers a Schoarship scheme to students studying through the medium of Wesh. There are two eves of award, depending on the number of credits avaiabe to study through the medium of Wesh. The incentive schoarship is worth 500 a year, and is avaiabe to students on eigibe courses, who study at east 40 credits through the medium of Wesh.
