11 Effectively leveraging community events requires knowing: What events are upcoming in your area? What segments of your community attend and participate in those events? Why they are there? What would attract their interest so they will stop for you? How do you keep their attention long enough to engage? 11

12 Your challenges Almost nobody goes to a community event for the purpose of talking politics. Most will resent your intrusion in their day if you accost them and get in their way. Few will voluntarily stop to look at literature and fewer will take that literature There will be many competing attractions, most of them more fun! 12

13 Elements of a successful presence Visibly participate in and contribute to whatever the event/gathering is about Have a physical location for people to come to you so you don t have to accost them Have attractive offering or activity that will draw them to your location over others Include something time consuming in a fun way that will create and maintain lineups WORK those lineups to engage those waiting 13

14 Tactic: Visibility Obtain a supply of red Liberal shirts Encourage members and supporters to buy and wear Get them out as a visible group to march in parades, etc. Ensure that all your volunteers wear their Liberal affiliation Examples Canada Parade Pride Parade Santa Claus Parade 14

15 Tactic: Liberal Tent/Shelter/Table Show the Liberal colours but have event-relevant, non-political attractors Include engaging participatory activities that will take time Include activities that will delight children and hence hold their parents The sole job of your MP/candidate is to engage in meaningful conversation those who are waiting in line, or waiting for others who are waiting in line Supplement with your best communicators 15

16 Tactic: Button Pressing Purchase your own button machine or share one with nearby ridings (cost $530 + shipping and HST) Design and produce eventthemed buttons for every event you participate in (cost approx 11 cents per button) Give visitors a choice of designs; press on the spot In non-election contexts, keep Liberal logos low-key Have designs for children to colour and sign At least one souvenir design Keep stats of design popularity
