RECOMMANDATIONS DU RAPPORT Que le C.A. de la Bibliothèque publique d Ottawa approuve la participation d un administrateur/administratrice, ainsi que les administrateurs Jim Bennett et Patrick Gauch, à la Super conférence de l Ontario Library Association de 2014 qui aura lieu du 29 janvier au 1 er février 2014 à Toronto, Ontario.

2 2 CONSEIL DE LA BIBLIOTHÈQUE BACKGROUND Board policy B.23 relates to Board participation in library-related conferences, meetings, and events. It states in part: The experience of participating in conferences, seminars or workshops is a valuable opportunity for Library Board Trustees, and one that benefits the trustee and the Library. Library Board members are encouraged to attend relevant library conferences as a means to promote Board development and excellence. The policy also states that at least one trustee be selected to attend the Ontario Library Association Conference. DISCUSSION The Ontario Library Association is Canada s largest library organization and OLA s Super Conference is Canada s largest continuing education event in librarianship. Within the Super Conference event is the country s largest library tradeshow. Super Conference plays host to some of the country s and the world s leading speakers, both from inside the library world and outside key speakers include Nina Simon, Jennifer Keesmaat, Robert J. Sawyer, David Usher, Miranda Hill, Colonel Chris Hadfield, John Pateman, R. David Lankes, Richard Wagamese, Paul Roux, Jennison Asuncion, Dr. Michael Gordon. A number of sessions offered have been developed with Library Boards in mind. These include: Program Evaluation as a Governance Tool, with Bill Irwin Working Relationships: The Toolkit, with Colin Plows Are Libraries Planning for the Future?, with Esrick Quintyn Governance and the 21 st Century: Best Practices for Your Board, with Patrick Gauch Library Funding: Libraries Surviving vs. Thriving, with Greg Burns and Rick Austin Ontario Public Library Guidelines: Procedures for Accreditation, with Shann Leighton and Elise Cole Meeting Procedures for Boards, with Jim Lochrie Library Board Recruitment, with Jane Hilton and Panel Managing Your CEO s Performance, with Daryl Novack

3 3 CONSEIL DE LA BIBLIOTHÈQUE In addition, sessions that have been highlighted in the 2014 program include: SPOTLIGHT: Ensuring the Future: The Library Board and Effective Advocacy, Wendy Newman, Senior Fellow, Faculty of Information, University of Toronto SPECIAL EVENT: Election Year Boot Camp for Trustees With the following guest speakers: o Susanna Hubbard Krimmer, CEO, London Public Library o Josh Morgan, Chair, London Public Library o Matt Brown, Ward 7, City Council, London Ontario o Gina La Force, Principal, La Force & Associates o Margaret Andrewes, Consultant, Building Strong Boards o Randee Loucks, Consultant, Building Strong Boards One trustee is being requested to attend this conference as part of their trustee development role. The conference is being held in Toronto Ontario from January 29 to February 1, The deadline for early bird registration is Tuesday December 17, Trustee Gauch has been confirmed as a speaker, sharing his experiences and insights on governance-related matters. Trustee Bennett will also be in attendance as part of his role with the Federation of Ontario Public Libraries Board. CONSULTATION As part of the consultation process, trustees interested in participating in this conference are encouraged to submit their names at the December 9 Ottawa Public Library Board meeting or in advance to the Library s Chief Executive Office. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS The total cost of this trip is estimated at $1,357 (per person), which includes the sum of all expenses associated with early bird conference registration, flights, accommodation, and per diem. The following table provides a detailed summary of such expenses: Ontario Library Association Conference January 29 - February 1, 2014 Full Conference $360 Registration Flight (Return fare) $250 Hotel (3 nights) $540 Per Diem $207 Total $1,357 The Board s 2014 spending plan approved on November 21, 2013 supports funding trustee participation in key library-related conferences such as the Ontario Library Association Super Conference. BOARD PRIORITIES The subject of this report is in alignment with Board-approved strategic direction E Excellence in Governance, Accountability and Financial Sustainability. 5 5 CONSEIL DE LA BIBLIOTHÈQUE DISPOSITION Pending Board approval, staff will be in contact with the trustees approved to attend the conference. Travel arrangements shall be coordinated through the Library s Chief Executive Office, including conference registration, flights, and accommodations. Participating trustees will be asked to submit a written report or PowerPoint presentation to the Board within two Board meetings immediately following the conference. The report will summarize key highlights and provide other relevant facts aimed at supporting information-sharing and Board development.
