3 Review Type / Type d évaluation: Committee Member 1/Membre de comité 1 The proposal focuses on developing mentoring for young healthcare researchers, particularly in terms of developing research capacity in these individuals in lower and middle income countries. This reviewer agrees with the researchers that, Canada, given its resources, has a role to contribute as a global citizen in developing this research capacity. The research team appears to have the capacity to contribute in this role. With respect with limitations of the proposal, there appears to be some lack of focus as to whether this relates to education, research and capacity or clinical research capacity. It appears to be both but this would reduce the focus and hence undermine the impact and deliverables. The questions to be explored in the meeting seem very broad and the proposal could perhaps be strengthen by focusing on one or two of the areas. The information telecommunication technology role for example could be a potentially important enabler and by itself could be the focus of a planning meeting (i.e. how to optimize new information telecommunication technology in mentoring and how this can be applied in lower and middle income countries). The proposal states that women may have more difficulty finding helpful health research mentors. However, it is not stated how this will be addressed in the planning activities specifically. Although it targets low to middle income countries, the overseas participants are limited to two Spanish speaking South Americans countries. Would this not be an opportunity to explore input from other regions of the world? In the budget, the collaborative platform coordinator lined item seems a little elevated, unless the focus is on developing a process and platform for this mentorship; in which case, more than 2 days per month would be required.

4 Review Type / Type d évaluation: Committee Member 2/Membre de comité 2 Interesting question. Mentorship is key to establishing high quality researchers. Involvement of low and middle income country researchers is commendable. Question feasibility of this project to lead to listed deliverables in stated time frame.

5 Review Type / Type d évaluation: Committee Member 3/Membre de comité 3 The planning grant would fund a workshop that will support the creation of a research program on health research mentoring (in a global setting). No doubt that this this an important topic. Team includes investigators with lots of experience in the mentorship area. The face to face meeting will be held in Toronto and will eventually lead to future CIHR applications. The proposal could have been a bit clearer in describing the idea. The budget is adequate, however the reviewer noted some items that may be ineligible (e.g., Adobe Connect subscription - $726.00, 4% vacation pays)
