COMPETENCES This subject belongs to the content area LENGUA Y CIVILIZACIÓN C. Below are the competences specifically associated to it: GENERIC COMPETENCES G1 To have a good command of two foreign languages, reaching levels B2 and C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. G3 To know the social and cultural context, as well as the particular rules and usage, of the languages studied in the degree. SPECIFIC COMPETENCES G9 To be able to analyze, summarize and repeat a message accurately, taking into account all the issues involved in textual comprehension and production. G15 To gradually work towards attaining learner autonomy. E6 To learn, from a contrastive point of view, the main features that define the languages studied in the degree. E9 To acquire the skills and strategies necessary to distinguish linguistic units and translation units. E10 To know how to acquire the additional linguistic and specialized knowledge necessary to understand the source text as well as producing the target text (use of different types of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, thesauri, and grammar books). E14 To have a good command of the necessary processes to perform textual production: linguistic comprehension, production and variation. E19 To avoid common interference errors between the languages studied. E24 To be able to plan, organize and produce messages. 2. COURSE DESCRIPTION The general objective of Lengua y civilización C1: inglés is the study of English with a view to translating from it into Spanish, focusing on contrastive and communicative issues. 2 de 10

LEARNING OUTCOMES Towards the end of the course we expect students to have started acquiring the grammar and vocabulary of English at level B1, with a view to interpreting and translating from it into Spanish (G1). The student will have acquired the following skills and abilities: - Conceptual skills (KNOW): Knowledge of the main structures of grammar and the basic concepts that will enable students to improve their vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing in English, focusing on the cultural references and the communicative and contrastive features necessary for translation (E6). Knowledge of the different types of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, thesauri, and grammar books (E10). - Procedural skills (KNOW HOW TO DO): Reading: how to identify main ideas and specific information in short English texts, how to identify the meaning of words through context, how to identify English consonants and basic intonation patterns, and how to identify basic textual cohesive and coherent devices (G9). The cultural and social context of the language will also be dealt with through the texts employed in class (G3). Writing and speaking: techniques for writing summaries and presentations in English, as well as techniques for oral presentations and the usage of useful expressions in spoken English (E24). Grammar and vocabulary: how to avoid common interference errors at level B1 (E19). - Attitudinal skills (KNOW HOW TO BE/BEHAVE): To gradually work towards attaining learner autonomy (G15) Contenidos del programa / Course contents The general objective of this course is the study of English with a view to translating from it into Spanish, focusing on contrastive and communicative issues. 1. The meaning of the text 1.1. Finding meanings in the dictionary: words and concepts; types of information in dictionaries; recording the meaning of words Morphology and word formation: affixation, compounding, abbreviation, and conversion. 3 de 10

Finding meanings in the text: applying different types of knowledge; contextual clues in sentences and texts; explanation and specification; social and cultural features in texts Summary writing. 2. Semantic fields 2.1. Effective vocabulary learning: Different strategies for acquiring, handling and recalling English vocabulary successfully A selection of basic vocabulary topics of immediate practical use: living conditions, social relationships, occupations, etc. 3. English phonetics 3.1. English consonants 3.2. Grammar and pronunciation 3.3. Stress and orthography 4. Grammar and vocabulary 4.1. Tenses. The use of for, since, during, yet, etc. Phrasal verbs of time and change Modal verbs. Fixed expressions with have, take and bring Questions: question words, question tags, phrases of agreement. The use of do and make Conditional sentences. The differences between want, expect, hope, etc. The use of afterwards, after, until, etc. Phrases with time The passive voice. 6 2. Métodos docentes / Teaching methodology a. Theoretical sessions: Practical lectures on the basic concepts of reading, vocabulary, phonetics, and grammar in English. The material for these sessions (PowerPoint presentations, transparencies, etc.) will be made available at the photocopy shop of the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras and/or at the course webpage on Moodle. b. Practical sessions: Reading comprehension exercises, phonetic exercises, grammar exercises, techniques for writing summaries, for oral presentations, for learning and handling vocabulary successfully. Two types of practical sessions are considered: Correction of exercises: students will present the answers to the exercises previously done during their independent study time. Workshops: students will complete exercises and activities under the teacher s supervision in the classroom. c. ECTS tutorials: To provide guidance on individual and/or group work, as well as checking the student s progress during the course. They will be announced two weeks in advance. d. Seminars: seminars will be conveniently scheduled to do progress tests, catch-up classes, etc. e. Oral presentations: In groups or individually students will have to plan, work on and present one of the topics of the course from a contrastive perspective. 6 de 10

If, all in all, the course is failed in the 1st Convocatoria, the grades for those activities are 7 de 10
