2 SUMMARY / RESUMEN Basic Statistics is a basic course scheduled during the second semester of year 1 with a total workload of 6 ECTS or credits. This introductory course is needed in order to provide the students with the understanding of the descriptive statistics and the fundaments of probability theory needed for making descriptive reports on the economic environment, for market analysis, for decision taking and for subsequent courses (Inference and Econometrics). In a degree aimed to academically train future entrepreneurs, administrators and directors of companies, able with their management to contribute to economic and social development, Basic Statistics is an essential matter for the analysis of numerical data coming from measurements, observation or the design and development of new business initiatives that lead these efforts. This course will introduce the basic concepts of descriptive statistics and probability theory which will form the basis for the study of inference the next course. The subject is also useful for other subjects such as the analysis of financial statements, market research fundamentals, econometrics, quality and environment management, methods for the analysis of business information, prospective, decision making, financing, survey methodology and others. The course is divided into two basic parts: descriptive and probability. The first part is devoted to descriptive analysis of variables and statistical data, both single-dimensional and multidimensional. Regression techniques are explained and they are also developed themes of special interest in the field of the economy, as it is the case of measures of inequality, economic indicators and time series. The second part includes the issues related to the theory of probability aimed to provide instruments that make it possible to work under uncertainty conditions. Probability theory and models, both singledimensional and multidimensional are taught. The objective of this course is to provide students with an understanding of: The origin and usefulness of Statistics The concept of variable and different types of variables The information contained in single-dimensional and multidimensional distributions The measures of position, dispersion and shape or profile The relationship among variables The fundaments of the Theory of Probability The main distributions and models of probability Estadística Básica Grado en ADE para Emprendedores Página 2

The subject is primarily structured around theoretical sessions, practical sessions and the realization of a group work. Different teaching methods will be used depending on the type of session. However, the approach will be participatory and active as frequent Estadística Básica Grado en ADE para Emprendedores Página 7
8 examples and exercises will be developed after the theoretical explanations to facilitate understanding and fixing the concepts. In the theoretical sessions usually with a length of 2 hours- they will be presented the main contents of the items contextualizing them to different fields of application of the business and socio-economic environments. The predominant teaching method in theoretical classes will be the participatory master class. It will be encouraged the participation and discussion in class in order to offer the students a direct involvement with the content capturing their attention and promoting their ability to concentrate, At practical sessions, the teacher will propose students real or fictitious situations to be solved by applying the theoretical concepts learned in theory sessions. These classes will be held with the support of PSPP statistical software and also with the support of Excel. At the end of classes, selected students by shift are invited to summarize the explained contents devoting 10 minutes to this task each day. Other teaching resources will be: exercises proposed in each section to fix the concepts and to be delivered as part of the continuous evaluation; the realization of a work based on real data collected in the own classroom. This work may be approached by groups of two or three students maximum and runs throughout the whole course. It will be delivered at the end of the course as part of the continuous evaluation complementing the compulsory exercises. Student may consult the teacher about this work in the tutoring service. EVALUATION CRITERIA / EVALUACIÓN Y ASISTENCIA Evaluation of students will take place through ongoing evaluation and testing of synthesis. EVALUATION CRITERIA There are 2 examination sessions* in each course, complemented by the continuous evaluation. * Cada matrícula da derecho a dos convocatorias de examen 1. Continuous evaluation: will consist of various elements and situations. CLASS PARTICIPATION (10%) Attendance and participation is essential and all students are expected to participate. Intelligent and relevant discussions are expected from each student and it is an important part of the general evaluation of the course. Among other skills, class participation is Estadística Básica Grado en ADE para Emprendedores Página 8
9 very important to develop the ability to express and defend one s ideas. HOMEWORK (15%) Exercises are proposed in order to cover all the concepts and learning take-away. All the exercises and their delivering are specified in the subject s Manual. GROUP WORK (15%) At the beginning of the course there will be established working groups of two or maximum three students. Each group will be invited to develop a concrete work based on data collected at the classroom. This work will result in a report applying the main methods learned during the course. The groups will deliver the work by the end of the course and make a presentation of the main results obtained. SUGGESTED BOOK (5%) Finally, the students are invited to read a suggested book and deliver a summary from the reading. This work will also be evaluated and the score added to the continuous evaluation (5%). THE SUGGESTED BOOK FOR CONTIUOUS EVALUATION IS: Caceres Carrasco, Felipe Rafael. (2005). Oportunidades para Crear Empresas. Sevilla. Expandora sur ISBN It is at your disposal in the Library Center. Situation 1: As explained before, the first element of the continuous assessment is attendance, attitude and class participation (10%). Class attendance is mandatory for optimal monitoring of the subject, so that unjustified absence more than 10% of the sessions, i.e. more than 3 sessions of 30, means that a student will not be part of continuous assessment of this subject. As a result, the maximum score which can be achieved will be obtained in the test/s of synthesis. Situation 2: If a student is in a second call. Continuous evaluation is non-recoverable, therefore the score obtained during the ongoing Estadística Básica Grado en ADE para Emprendedores Página 9
10 evaluation of the subject will be maintained, both in 1st call 2nd call. The test of synthesis will be recoverable at the end of the semester. Situation 3: If a student is in second registration. Students who enroll for the second time in the subject will receive express directions of the teacher on how to overcome the continuous assessment on the subject. This part, that is, the continuous evaluation will have a weight in the final grade of the 40%. 2. Synthesis test. They consist of two partial tests plus a recovery. The first partial shall include the materials of items 1, 2, 3 and 4. By the end of the course the second test will include topics 5, 6 and 7 for those who have approved the first partial and a recovery of the first partial will be made the same day including issues 1, 2, 3, 4. It will be necessary to overcome with 5 points out of 10, both synthesis tests, taking in consideration that the mark in each of the exams is equal to 10 points, to be able to combine them with continuous evaluation. The synthesis tests are mandatory and overcome each one of them is an indispensable condition to pass the course. Synthesis tests are recoverable by July through an examination of recovery which shall comprise all matter. This part will have a weight in the final grade of the 60%. The final score of the subject is calculated by weighting the average of synthesis tests with the continuous evaluation and must reach 5 points to overcome the course.
