2 2. PREQUISITES It is expected successful applicants to have an upper intermediate level in English language. 3. COMPETENCES TO BE ACHIEVED 4. AIMS OR OBJETIVES Generals: - Be able to work in a group for an interdisciplinar, multicultural, and international industry. - Develop a critical stance towards the social environment in its language aspects. - Acquire the personal qualities necessary to treat well potential customers. - Question and challenge social and intellectual authority and knowledge. Specifics: - Be able to produce clear, concise and convincing oral and written communication with customers. - Get the ability to promote Castilla- La Mancha authonomy products: tourism (historic sites, the countryside, the community culture, and so on), and be able to sell the agricultural products from this region. - Be aware of how different social and cultural contexts affect the nature of language and meaning in relation to the business world. - Get students greater confidence, when dealing with customers, taking part in discussions, or guiding groups of visitors. - Acquire training in the understanding and application of statistics. - Gain knowledge and understanding of the communication aspects in dealing with an organisation s internal and external stakeholders. - Develop the speaking and oral needed skills for key job-related 2
3 situations. - Features authentic texts and interviews with experts in the business industry that develop extensive reading and listening skills. - Students should be able to use the online tools that help them to prepare their presentations, videos, and web pages. 5. CONTENTS 1. Introduction: English for specific purposes - Differences between the British and American business vocabulary and expressions. 2. Tourism - Giving tourist advice on Castilla-La Mancha attractions and events:. Museums, art galleries & monuments. Places of outstanding natural beauty or historic interest. Local amenities and facilities 3. Business - Economic issues - National and local economic policies - Prepare exhibitions, - Prepare trade fairs - Look for sponsorships - Receptions 3

Advertising and Publicity - Writing press releases, make announcements - Design advertisements, write and tape radio commercials & promotional videos. - Write positive impacts of the new products. - Design brochures, leaflets, maps, posters, guided tours, draw grids. 5. Statistics - Working with figures. Payment procedures, prices, remuneration, foreign currency.. Giving information from charts and tables.. Discounts and special offers. Design fact files. Presenting promotional material. Negotiating rates, and negotiate the terms of contracts. 6. Professional activities. Write CVs and covering letters, applying for jobs.. Dealing with complaints, writing letters of apology, feedback, designing a questionnaire and carry out a survey, writing a report, writing and responding to letters of enquiry, giving information and advice, writing a letter of confirmation, describing facilities, making a booking, memos, s, faxes. 7. Presentations and Talks. Take part in meetings and trade presentations. Business negotiating for an international organisation. Prepare interviews. Living a short presentation from notes.. Taking part in public meetings. Planification of holding a business seminar abroad for local business on the benefits of your new software. 4

6 8. CRITERIA OF ASSESMENT / EVALUATION Assessment will be on going process taking into account class participation. The weighting of coursework is based on:. Theoretical : 20, 4%.. In-class activities, workshops and discussion sessions: 34%.. Comments, individual and in-group presentations followed by debates: 45, 6%.. The individual and in groups power-point oral presentations, written work, and brochure of the topic chosen by each student / groups of students will be graded taking into account the following:. The text will have to synchronise with the power-point images and music. Therefore, students should be careful to respect the pause boundaries, the stress markers, the intonation patterns, the speed of delivery and the convincing power. Apart from the use of the specific language and the formal organisation steps of presentations, including the oral fluency the use of specific business vocabulary and ESP expressions. Remember: Oral presentations and written work are compulsory at schedules dates. 9. AGENDA 15 weeks = 60 hours Introduction 6
