1 Department of Portuguese University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Spring 2014 Portuguese 102- Class time: Instructor: MWF Office hrs: COURSE OBJECTIVES: Portuguese 102 is the second course in a four-course sequence (101, 102, 201, 202) which leads to the fulfillment of the foreign language requirement. Portuguese is the primary language of instruction. The general goal of the course is to develop basic language skills. During this course, students will: continue to build a vocabulary base in order to increase language skills. Vocabulary studied in POR 102 includes but is not limited to: family relationships, housing household items, clothing and accessories, shopping, sports, physical and leisure activities, seasons and weather; continue to use acquired vocabulary and grammatical structures; develop knowledge of the grammar structures associated with, but not limited to: talking about events in the present using stem-changing verbs and some irregular verbs; talking about completed past events using the preterite; expressing continuing events; describing daily routines and habits using reflexive verbs and pronouns; using direct and indirect object pronouns to avoid repetition; using the imperfect to narrate events in the past without emphasizing completeness; listen to passages or conversations and discuss their content; read authentic texts and discuss their content; write paragraphs and short compositions using acquired vocabulary and grammatical structures; engage in and sustain face-to-face conversation with others about topics studied. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: By the end of this course, students will be able to: express opinions, plans, preferences; describe daily activities, ongoing actions; desbribe activities and narrate in the past; perform simple face-to-face conversations in Portuguese; comprehend simple spoken Portuguese; talk about simple topics in Portuguese in presentation mode. COURSE MATERIALS: Ponto de Encontro: Portuguese as a World Language. 2 nd edition. Pearson, 2011 (be sure to purchase access to My Portuguese Lab). An Eng-Port/Port-Eng dictionary (suggested: The Oxford Portuguese Dictionary).

2 2 COURSE POLICIES: 1. Attendance Regular attendance is of crucial importance in a foreign language classroom. Our classes are designed as communicative workshops in which successful learning experience is achieved through active participation and progressive accumulation of skills. Excessive absences will impede both your progress and that of the class as a whole. Therefore, attendance and participation will be carefully recorded and will account for a substantial portion of the final grade. You may accumulate up to four unexcused absences per semester without penalty. For each additional absence one point will be subtracted from the final grade. Only absences due to serious emergencies may be excused (with written documentation). Examples of excused absences include doctor s appointments, jury duty, court appearance, military obligations, funerals. Written documentation must be presented no later than the first class you attend after the class(es) you missed. Minor emergencies such as car trouble or alarm clock failure should be handled by taking advantage of the allotted number of absences. Note that work is NOT considered a valid excuse for missing class (since your class schedule should not conflict with your work schedule). Also note that missing class may affect your participation grade. 2. Preparation for class Before each class, go over the textbook sections assigned in the syllabus and familiarize yourself with new vocabulary, grammar structures, etc. As new material is presented and practiced in the classroom, you will understand more, respond better and learn more efficiently than if you were dealing with something entirely unfamiliar. The instructor s function is to help you practice, and to clarify when necessary, but not to repeat what is adequately explained in the text. 3. Written homework After each class, do the exercises assigned by your instructor. Many exercises will be assigned using My Portuguese Lab, the online activities tool for Ponto de Encontro. If you have trouble completing the assignments, be sure to seek help (from your instructor or from the Portuguese tutors in the Language Lab) on any portion of the material you have not understood. For technical help, please contact the Pearson representative. Unannounced quizzes may be given any time on or after the day an assignment is due, in order to check on your progress. Your instructor may assign homework to be turned in on paper, to be corrected and graded. If so, be sure to turn it in when your teacher instructs you to do so. Your instructor does not have to accept late homework; check his/her individual policy on late homework. Note: Homework assignments are to be completed individually unless otherwise noted. Failure to observe this policy may result in a grade of zero (0) for the assignment. 4. Testing There will be four tests in Portuguese 102. All tests will include the following elements: listening comprehension, grammar and vocabulary exercises, a reading comprehension exercise and a writing section. Tests may also include a section on culture. All test dates are noted on the syllabus. Make-up exams will be given only in cases of documented emergency. In addition to

3 3 regularly scheduled tests, occasional pop quizzes may be given; they will count toward the homework grade and cannot be made up. 5. Group presentation Each small group of students (three or four) will be responsible for presenting one topic of their choice (or of the instructor s choice) to the class. Topics must be discussed with the instructor in advance, and must be related to the Portuguese-speaking world. Presentations will be short (10-15 minutes) and will be delivered in Portuguese. They will be scheduled by the instructor and will take place during regular class time. Presentations can (but do not have to) include visual aids, brief recordings, or any other material that may be helpful. Speaking time should be divided more or less equally among participants in each group. Students will be evaluated on research, organization, and language use. A separate rubric will be distributed. Evaluation 50% Average of four tests 25% Homework assignments (minimum of 15 tasks; may include in-class quizzes) 15% Group presentation 10% Participation (attendance, active participation, overall progress) Grading scale: A B C D F A B C D A B C D Academic dishonesty Academic dishonesty is defined as attempting to obtain academic credit for work that is not one s own. Examples include: 1. copying another student s answers on an examination; 2. obtaining, or attempting to obtain, the answers to an examination in advance; 3. submitting a paper that was written by someone else; 4. submitting a paper that includes phrases, sentences and paragraphs that were copied verbatim, or almost verbatim, from a work written by someone else, without making this clear without indicating that these words were someone else s through the use of quotation marks or other appropriate citation conventions; 5. collaborating on a homework assignment when this has been expressly forbidden by the professor; 6. using unauthorized materials in completing assignments or examinations; 7. submitting the same paper for more than one class without the express permission of the instructors involved. This list of examples should not be considered exhaustive.
