DESCRIPCIÓN DEL CURSO En este curso, el/la estudiante adquirirá habilidades en el lenguaje (en forma escrita y oral) para desenvolverse con solvencia en actividades diarias por medio del aprendizaje de estructuras y vocabulario, y su uso en situaciones comunicativas. El estudiante conocerá también aspectos culturales necesarios para sobrevivir en un ambiente de habla inglesa. 3. GENERAL OBJECTIVE The student will master all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) plus the use of language at a pre intermediate level. 4. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES 4.1. LISTENING / SPEAKING Students will be able to: a) Follow clearly articulated speech in everyday conversation b) Understand a short narrative c) Understand the main points of recorded material on familiar subjects d) Engage in conversation on familiar topics e) Express personal opinions in informal discussions f) Agree or disagree describe dreams and plans g) Describe a variety of topics including likes and dislikes h) Narrate a short story.

Students are motivated through a variety of activities which enable them the discovery of the structure or meaning in the target language. These activities include oral and written texts that allow students to build up their own learning to successfully interact in English. The four skills of language plus structures are developed after the students previous knowledge has been practiced. All this in a given context which deals with aspects of interest such as work, studies, and daily life. 7. ASSESSMENT 7.1 EVALUATION ACTIVITIES The student will be assessed through a variety of activities that include, among others, the following: - oral work, - group work - homework - presentations - written production - grammar and vocabulary exercises 7.2 EVALUATION DATES From Monday, June 6 to Tuesday, July 20, Midterm written exam June 24, 2011 Midterm oral Exam June 27, Dates to submit midterm grades: From June 27 to July 1, Date to submit class participation grade: July 15, Final written exam: July 19, Final oral Exam: July 20, Dates to submit final grades: from July 20, to July 24, GRADING SYSTEM In order to pass the course, students must obtain a minimum of 30/50 points. Grades are distributed as follows: Classwork: Homework, quizzes 10 points Midterm written exam 10 Midterm oral exam 10 Final written exam 10 Final oral exam 10 TOTAL 50 points

If a student is more than 10 minutes late, s/he is considered to be absent. If a student has ELEVEN to TWENTY absences, s/he has to get 40 over 50 points to pass the course.
