Radio is nothing if not flexible!!! It is part of our job to change things on the fly, so I m right with you I could meet with your class on Monday the 11 th at 9:45, but I would have to duck out about 10:50 for an appointment with a client. I have a couple of thoughts: have the students create Public Service Announcements(PSA) for non-profit organizations like the United Way, Relay for Life, etc., and I can play those ads on KWBG; or, perhaps you could use Sacred Heart School as your business! The school has a bank of ads to schedule. We would have to coordinate with Mrs. Eldridge on that one. But I think if the kids could write ads persuading their audience about a Catholic education, it would give them an opportunity to talk about what they really know and even perhaps reinforce their own appreciation for Sacred Heart School!!! If the students choose to write ads for non-profits, I could provide some pretty thorough information for several agencies that are funded by the United Way. With this approach, there would be several different topics upon which the students could write, with the end goal being to persuade our listeners to donate to the Boone County United Way. The PSAs would probably be the most expedient this year since it is pretty tried and true territory. This is the first year for Sacred Heart to have ads to use, and Sue and I haven t yet had the opportunity to put our heads together to determine and exact course of action. Quick Time recordings should be fine, or would you be able to bring them to the radio station to record? Having them come to the studio will give them a better sense of the real-world. Maybe since we are on a bit of a time crunch, the field trip to record could be a goal for next year s class. Should we have a phone conversation to get this all sorted out? And the career day idea for next year sounds good to me! 10 Carol, First let me apologize because I m thinking this unit through this unit all over again and changing my plans because of some changes that we had to make this week. So... My brain is a bit scrambled... I m hoping you can at least help me by guiding me, informing me, or shutting me down. :) This week is a tough week, but that week of the 11th would be great the 11th would really be great if possible. I have them from 9:45-11:15. Here is my background thoughts for what we re doing just in case you can help me out. :) We ve had a big change in our schedules this week so I m scrambling to finish the unit I m in plus this Junior achievement program we are doing as of this week. So, if this doesn t work this year, maybe we can plan it better for next year. And... since this is your profession, maybe you can help me out with suggestions to make it an even better unit. My original thought was to have you visit and share with us what you look for in putting together a radio ad the time limit, what information is needed, how you edit and cut etc.? Then I was going to have the students create an advertisement my dream thought, was to make this real world and have it put on the radio, but we don t have a television or radio station like the middle school and high school, so I was also going to ask you about the guidelines for getting your radio station to play them? Then the more I thought about things, the more I realized that because I chose local businesses, maybe we couldn t do that because of financial guidelines, rules, FCC rules etc. Maybe this is where you can give me ideas. :). I tend to think pretty big for these kids, but they ve now been published by Petco, Skyped with authors, and participated in several Global read alouds. They ve even Skyped a lesson with a historical museum in Virginia, so I guess it doesn t hurt to try the bigger ideas. Anyway, Maybe if you don t have the time for coming over, we can Skype with you or someone else at the radio station like a virtual field trip. If that s a quicker process, we re up for it. If this doesn t work for this year, maybe you can send me a quick few answers to those questions I stated earlier in the ? What the end goal is... I have the students creating radio ads for several businesses around Boone. We will use Quick Time to record them and then I was hoping to publish them but that s where I get stumped. I had thought about putting them on our School Facebook page but I don t know about advertising laws. My only other thought was to play them on the morning announcements in our school; this is the easiest solution, but easiest is not usually my first thought process, and it just came to me as I was putting this together. I have been thinking about this for a couple years now and the Common Core wants real world experiences, so I wanted to see what I could do with the radio station as far as this unit is concerned. I appreciate your thoughts, your brainstorming with me, and/or even just giving me the information needed to create these ads and be done with it for this year. Another thought I had for next year s Career day was having an 8th grader shadow someone at the radio station and then present what they learned about the business on Career day.
