1 Miraculous Catches of Fish Scripture: Luke 5:1-11; John 21:1-6 Objective: God has a Plan! Bible Memory Verse: Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. THEME OVERVIEW This year children are on a trip to visit attractions located at Faith City. Your site is an Aquarium site. Your site will be an underwater adventure filled with sea life. There will be a boat somewhere in the room with fish nets. While the children visit with you, they will learn about the two miraculous catches of fish in the Bible. They will learn about the plans God has for us to go and tell others about Jesus! Through the mission lab, the children will get to explore being the hands and feet of Jesus to children in our community by learning about local missions and creating letters to be used in the school backpack ministry. SETTING THE SCENE OVERVIEW Room Décor for this site will be an underwater scene with lots of sea life. For door décor, cover in blue paper and use Aquarium Sign to hang on door. In the room, create a water scene on the walls with different shades of blue butcher paper and paper cut outs of sea life. Use lantern fish on ceiling and clear balloons hanging down from ceiling for bubbles to create an underwater scene. For the Bible scene, use the boat and fishing nets provided to create a story time area. Memory verse will be displayed on a shark. Be sure to include the Bible story and memory verse in your room. Should you need any ideas or assistance in decorating, please utilize our decorating team. Each teacher will be provided with a basic room kit to use for decorating your site. Aquarium Room Kit: Four Hanging Lantern Fish (For Ceiling); Clear Balloons (Bubbles for Ceiling); Large Shark with Memory Verse; Sea Creatures for Wall; Boat for Story Time; Fishing Net for Story Time GETTING STARTED ACTIVITIES When the children arrive in your site, welcome them to the Aquarium and choose from the following activities to help them get acquainted with you and one another (you may use your own activity if you have one): Shell-Match: Color and decorate the attached Shell-Match Patterns. Cards may be laminated ahead of time for durability. Divide the class into two teams and let the team members alternate choosing two cards to try and find a matching pair. After the game, give each child a card and let him/her find the other person who holds the card which matches his own. When the children have all found a shell-match, let them spend a few minutes getting acquainted. Repeat this activity several times so the entire group can get to know each other better. 2 Sharing Circle: Cut apart the attached Sea Life Sharing Cards. For younger children, you should take some time to explain what each sea character represents on the cards. Place cards in a sand bucket. Have the children sit in a circle and pass around the bucket, taking turns to remove one card at a time. Have each child share based on the card they selected. Use this sharing time to get acquainted with the children who are visiting your site today. Net, Net, Fish: Have the children sit in a large circle for this game. Choose one child to be the fisherman. He/she begins walking around the outside of the circle, patting the other Childs on the shoulder and saying Empty net, empty net, empty net, fish! The child who has been called a fish must chase the fisherman around the outside of the circle. IF the fisherman is caught before he can reach the seat vacated by the fish, he goes in the lake (the center of the circle) and the fish becomes the next fisherman. If the fisherman is not caught them the fish must go into the center of the circle and the fisherman may choose a new fisherman to begin the new round. Continue playing until most of the children are in the center of the circle. BIBLE LESSON Tips: Direct children to the Bible area of the room. Hold your Bible in your lap as you tell the story and use lots of expression as you tell the story. Refrain from reading the entire story from the lesson. Use questions to engage the children. End this section with a prayer time. Introduce today s Bible story by giving the kids a little bit of information about the site where they are visiting today. Tell the children that today they are visiting Faith City s one and only Catch Aquarium. Ask the children if they have ever been to an aquarium. Allow children to share their favorite fish that they may see at an aquarium. Take a few minutes talking about all the different fish that can be found at an aquarium. Talk about how you can find all sea life in an aquarium out in the world in the ocean, lakes, and rivers. Ask children if they have ever been fishing with their family before and caught a fish. Allow children to give an example if time allows. Tell children that today we will learn about fishermen that lived a l ong ago, when Jesus lived on earth, and that they fished as a way to provide food and resources to their families. Be sure to tell children that this is a true story from God s Word, the Bible. Remind them that the Bible is divided into two parts the Old Testament and the New Testament. Tell the children that today s Bible story is found in the Gospels of Luke and John, which is found the New Testament, and that today story is about two fishing expeditions in the days of Jesus. Invite children to open their Bibles to the book of Luke 5:1-11 in the New Testament. A big crowd gathered to hear Jesus. People were pushing and shoving to listen to Jesus preach. Everyone wanted to hear His Words. (Use spray bottle to wet crowd of children as they listen) Jesus was standing beside a big lake. The cool waves rolled into shore. Jesus could feel the water on His tired feet. People were pushing in close to Jesus causing him to back into the water. Nearby, some men were fishing from their boats. These men were James, John and Simon Peter. James and John were brothers who owned one boat; and Simon Peter owned VBC 2013 Faith City Page 2

3 the other boat. These men had been fishing all night and now they were washing their nets. When Jesus saw Simon Peter in the boat, he climbed up and joined him. As he climbed in he asked Simon Peter to move the boat away from the shore. It will be easier for the crowd to see and hear me, he said. After Simon Peter moved the boat out into the lake, Jesus sat down and began preaching again. When Jesus was done preaching, he asked Simon Peter to move his boat out into the deep water. He said, Let down the nets, and we will catch some fish. Moaning, Simon Peter did not want to go fishing. Jesus we have been fishing all night. We did not catch any fish. I m Tired. But because You are telling me to go fishing again, I will. (Use spray bottle to wet crowd of children as they listen) The nets were lowered. Simon peered into the dark lake. Would he catch any fish? They caught so many fish that their nets began to break! It was truly a miracle! Simon Peter called to James and John, Come Help our boat is full of fish! James and John came over and helped with the fish. Soon both boats started to sink! Then men were truly amazed by this miracle. Simon Peter realized the power of Jesus, and recognized that He was the Son of God. Simon Peter felt unworthy to be standing beside Jesus and he bowed down to Jesus! Jesus comforted Simon Peter and said: Don t be afraid! From now on, you will be a fisher of men! So after this great miracle, James, John and Simon Peter took their boats to the shore, left everything behind them, and followed Jesus. They were three of His disciples. They traveled around to different places with Jesus, and share in His important work. The disciples watched in amazement as Jesus performs many miracles and taught people about God and his purpose on earth. Instruct Students to turn to John 21: 1-6. The second catch of fish can be found here. The day came when the disciples were very sad. Jesus had been crucified. Jesus, their Friend who had helped them catch all those fish, their Friend who they followed and who had taught them about God had died. He had come alive again some days ago, but where was He now? The disciples decided to go fishing. (Use spray bottle to wet crowd of children as they listen) Splash went their nets into the water. They fished all night. They talked while they fished. They remembered what it had been like to go fishing with Jesus. But during this night they did not catch any fish, just like before. Morning came. Friends, have you caught any fish? The disciples heard the voice of a man. The man was standing on the shore. They did not know the man and answered, No. Throw your nets in the water on the right side of the boat, said the man. The disciples did and the net filled up with fish, and suddenly, joyfully, merrily the disciples knew who the Man was, JESUS! VBC 2013 Faith City Page 3

4 Jesus was alive! He was blessing his followers because they obeyed His Word and He Loved them so very much. It was a very good day. As you conclude your Bible story, explain to the children that just like the disciples so long ago, Jesus has called us to be His followers. We can know that God has a wonderful plan for our lives as we follow Him. As His followers, we can help spread the good news of Jesus and help other learn about God s plan for their lives! Close this time of Bible Story with a prayer. MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITIES Teach your site memory verse through one of the following games (or use one of your own): Fishy Treasure Hunt: Hide the words from the memory verse on sea life shapes throughout the room decorations. As you call out the words from the memory verse, the children will race to find the hidden words in the room. (Give some guidelines on area in the room that they are hidden, not to run over each other, etc.) When the word is found place it on the floor, go on to the next and have the children build the memory verse on the floor. Continue until the verse is finished. Then, have kids recite verse, and take one word away at a time as they continue to recite the verse. Continue this until the children can say the verse with no words on the floor. Fishing for Truth: Create a fishing area in your classroom as part of your site decorations. Write the memory verse individual on fish shapes. Attached a metal paper clip to each fish and place in the fishing hole area of the classroom. Have children use a magnetic fishing pole (purchase at dollar store or make one) and take turns fishing for the words. Have children build memory verse as they fish it out and practice reciting it. This could be used as a team relay race for older grades by creating two fishing areas and dividing class into teams. Jeremiah 29:11 Overview: In today s lab, you will have the children participate in the mission project. This week s mission project involves collecting items that will go to children in our community who may not always have the things they need in terms of food. This food will be used in the Weekend Food Bags for children in local elementary schools that have been identified by their school counselors as being in need of additional food for the weekend. These children participate in the Free/Reduced Lunch Program during VBC 2013 Faith City Page 4

5 the week but struggle over the weekends. Bags are sent home with the kids every Friday in their backpack and include easy-open/self-serve foods. Supplies: Video, Paper, Markers, and Stickers Activity: Introduce Scarlett and Truth by reading attached Introduction. Show short video about Scarlett and Truth and their Nothing but the Truth Ministry. Have children draw a picture and/or write a letter to the child who will receive some of the donated items. (Sample Letters attached) Close the Lab in prayer for Scarlett and Truth as they serve in our community and give each child a Nothing but the Truth sticker. REVIEW QUESTIONS Before children leave the room have them review the lesson with a game or with just questions and then remind the children of today s memory verse and key concept. Game Idea: Throw a blow up fish around the room to children. When they catch it have them answer a review question. 1. What book of the Bible was today s story found? 2. How many catches of fish did we talk about today? 3. Who caught the fish both times? 4. How many fish were caught? 5. Why did Jesus allow them to catch so many fish? 6. What did Jesus call them after the first catch of fish? 7. What lesson can we learn from this story in the Bible about what we are called to do? VBC 2013 Faith City Page 5
