It is one of Adelaide s oldest and most respected Colleges and has been educating boys in South Australia since The College provides an educational service Birth to Year 12 across three campuses. CBC Community Children s Centre, Junior Campus and Senior Campus. The College has a current enrolment in 2016 in the vicinity of 1250 students across the three campuses. Christian Brothers College provides a vibrant and creative response to the educational needs of today. (Charter for Catholic Schools in the Edmund Rice Tradition ). 2 B R O A D P U R P O S E The Student Counsellor will work as part of the Student Learning Enrichment team to provide counselling support, referral services and guidance for students and their families. The Student Counsellor will plan, review and deliver programs, identify students at risk and organise initiatives that will enhance the wellbeing of students at the College. The role is student focused, program based and will involve liaison with external service providers as required. The Student Counsellor will promote CBC, CESA and EREA mission, vision, values and touchstones in all aspects of the role. You will work within available budgetary and staffing levels. You will establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff, the wider community, students and their families. You will have well developed relational skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all members of the College community and its external partners. The Student Counsellor will promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) education, encourage students and support parents. As the ATSI support person you will collaborate with teachers to assist ATSI students achieve their potential and keep the ATSI community informed of students' progress and achievements. The Student Counsellor will provide careers education to students, which assists them to plan their future vocational direction, and link career and subject choice to independent learning. Key Responsibilities and Duties; D U T Y S T A T E M E N T Counselling Provide confidential counselling service for students Years 7 to 12, their parents and staff as required, while adhering to mandatory notification principles Work with staff to identify students at risk and offer counselling, support and links to external support providers In consultation with the Director Student Learning Enrichment responsible for the implementation and delivery of early intervention and community education programs Participate in Crisis Management Planning when such situations arise Oversee the pastoral care, welfare and behaviour support of students in accordance with College Policy Implement and review the delivery of the mandated Child Protection Curriculum Provide advice to the Director Senior and Middle Schools of appropriate referral options for students identified as needing additional testing or support Work in collaboration with the Director of Senior or Middle School and Director Student Learning Enrichment, in ensuring the expressed needs of students with behavioural challenges and their families are met Initiate preventative Health and Social Education programs Initiate a biannual Child Protection audit of the College Birth-12 across all 3 Campuses Ensure professional judgement is applied in communicating relevant information and issues to the Director of Middle and Senior Schools and teaching staff Maintain and manage all student counselling notes which are the property of the College Careers Ensure all students Years 10, 11 and 12 have clearly identified career aspirations Responsible for the organisation of CBC subject and careers expo s Coordinate external careers visits, expo s and events Work in collaboration with parents and students to meet requirement of PLP, University and careers applications, including online psychometric testing Ensure all students are supported and have a solid understanding of the work experience program, and work closely with the VET Coordinator to source and allocate work placements Liaise with employers about the duty of care aspects of work experience, ensure relevant workplace risk assessments are conducted prior the program PID ESO Student Counsellor (Careers & ATSI Education) November 2015

3 Provide data to the relevant Leadership Team members to assist with student subject selection and career pathways planning Work in collaboration with the SACE Coordinator on the verification and documentation of special provisions in assessment for students enrolled in SACE programs of study Assist with Parent Information sessions and Subject Selection interviews as requested by the Assistant Principal Learning Senior Campus Organise SATAC Information sessions and distribution of SATAC guides for Year 12 students Maintain and manage relevant documents and database of placements details pertaining to work experience Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) Education Support the Literacy and Numeracy development of ATSI students Working with the Director of Student Learning Enrichment to contribute to site learning plans and individual learning plans to improve ATSI student s social, wellbeing and learning outcomes Supporting teaching staff to develop and maintain relationships with ATSI students, parents and families to respond and relate to ATSI students social wellbeing and learning needs Participating in the development and implementation of strategies to support successful social, wellbeing and learning outcomes for ATSl students Be a key focus teacher for contact with CESA, ATSI students and parents Liaise with parents of ATSI students and encourage their involvement in the college programs Encourage and increase an awareness of ATSI culture within and external to the college through opportunities such as NAIDOC Week, college assemblies and events within the local community and CESA Monitor attendance of ATSI students and follow up absences with parents Keep staff informed about appropriate resources, professional reading and learning opportunities about ATSI Education Leadership Partner with parents and families to continually build authentic College community Lead the review of student and staff welfare policies, in collaboration with the Director Student Learning Enrichment Provide support to teachers in building meaningful relationships with students and parents Commitment to regular personal professional development, and encourage, monitor and support the professional development of staff Assist with training and development in the area of pastoral care and student and family support Create conditions conducive to team building and staff wellbeing Other Ensure the inclusion of Christian Brothers College vision, mission and strategic goals in the development of policies and documentation Actively lead staff and students to ensure all areas of the College are safe and clean Network with external bodies and tertiary institutions to organise university visits and guest speakers Provide regular reporting to the Director Student Learning Enrichment on students at risk, and status on current intervention and support programs in place with students Upon invitation provide critical incident debriefing and counselling to the College Critical Incident Response team as required Some out of hours work is an essential component of this role Respond to other duties as assigned by the Principal, through due process of consultation Write regular columns in the College newsletter Insight Attend relevant meetings, including but not limited to; o ATSI Advisory Group (Chair) o Learning Environment Team Meeting o Relevant Committee Meetings o Relevant Advisory Groups PID ESO Student Counsellor (Careers & ATSI Education) November 2015
