2 Preamble The aim for the Adelaide Church her schools, parishes and services is to collectively engage families to create communities of faith and well being. The Church wants to connect across the lifespan of families from newborns and pre-schoolers, to primary and secondary students and into adulthood. Supporting families to make their lives happier and healthier as members of a vibrant Catholic community is key to living the vision of Nazareth Catholic Community. Nazareth Catholic Community brings together families from the Albert Park/Pennington, Flinders Park/Hindmarsh and Seaton parishes and engages with other parishes in the Western suburbs. Nazareth connects with families in a whole of life journey to minister to their needs, by providing a range of integrated services and opportunities to support the spiritual, social, emotional and intellectual growth and well being of each family s members. At the heart of Nazareth s vision is a community who gather in prayer and celebration, with the Eucharist as the focus from which we draw our inspiration. The Christian message and the Catholic Traditions are evident in contemporary, relevant and diverse gatherings. Life- long opportunities for education and development are at the heart of this innovative endeavour. GENERAL DESCRIPTION An Education Support Officer Grade 6 (Extension) will, (in addition to the duties of an employee at Grade 5) within a school or group of schools as an experienced professional, apply knowledge, skills and demonstrated capacity to perform tasks of considerable complexity consistent with their training. The employee may be responsible for the overall planning of the work and will be self-directed in the application of skills possessed. The employee may also manage the work of other para-professionals and professionals either in a clinical team context or as part of a service delivery group. A part of this level may be the development of policy and practice directions for use by other professionals and school staff. HOURS 48 weeks per annum, working 22.5hrs per week, with specific hours to be negotiated. Some out of hours work may be required. 3 BROAD PURPOSE Work collaboratively with the Nazareth Leadership Team, colleagues, families, young people and a range of integrated services to oversee the strategic implementation of proactive intervention programs focused on the development of social and emotional capacities of members of the Nazareth Catholic Community. Work collaboratively with Leadership and the Counselling Team. Liaise with the Counsellors and Leadership Teams, in particular Deputy Principals, Director of Student Development, House Coordinators and Band Leaders. Support and work in collaboration with the College Counsellors. The Clinical Psychologist is responsible to the Co-Principals through the Deputy Principals. KEY AREAS OF WORK Act as a resource person for staff to develop strategies for students who are disengaged or who exhibit alienation from school life. Be available for parents to discuss family issues that are affecting family relationships. Be part of the College Crisis Management Team. Be responsible for psychological assessments relating to intellectual, behavioural and social/emotional development. Be responsible for psychological interventions with students experiencing chronic difficulties. In conjunction with the Nazareth Leadership Team, develop processes for managing difficult and complex situations and needs. Liaise with private practitioners and community agencies involved in supporting students. Refer students and/or families to specialist help when required, liaise with the agencies involved and provide necessary feedback to staff. Report where appropriate to the Co-Principals and/or Leadership Teams. Work collaboratively with the College Counsellors in creation & implementation of proactive intervention programs particularly focused around social/emotional skilling. PERSON SPECIFICATIONS Have an understanding of and willingness to support the Catholic ethos of the Nazareth Catholic Community. Have extensive experience and knowledge of counselling theories and practices. Possess appropriate tertiary qualifications.

4 Possess an understanding of multicultural issues as they impact on service delivery. Possess an understanding of child and adolescent development. Possess an understanding of child protection issues and legislation. Maintain professional registration and ongoing professional development as required by Government and professional bodies relevant to the profession of psychology. Maintain confidentiality as required but be cognizant of the College s legal and moral duty of care. Ensure adherence to all aspects of legal compliance as they relate to the role. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SAFETY & WELFARE Commitment Support the development and maintenance of a best practice OHS&W culture within their workplace. Adhere to safe work practices. Be responsible for OHS&W and maintenance in any area or classroom designated. Provide appropriate OHS&W training for persons using designated areas. Encourage colleagues and others on the worksite to adhere to safe work practices. Legal and Policy Requirements Comply with all relevant policies and procedures. Improve systems of work and safe practices. Plans and Budgets Implement relevant actions in OHS&W plans as required by the teacher s supervisor(s). Performance and Training Participate in relevant OHS&W training programmes. Provide appropriate OHS&W training for persons using designated areas. Include OHS&W goals and responsibilities in their role descriptions and performance plans in consultation with their supervisor. Risk Management and Hazard Control Report hazards and unsafe workplace practices associated with the workplace to their supervisor. Suggest improvements or recommend changes to avoid, eliminate or minimise workplace hazards. Incident Reporting and Investigation Report work related injuries and incidents in accord with the Catholic Church Safety Manual. Participate in the investigation of potential hazards, dangerous occurrences, OHS&W incidents and near misses in accord with the Catholic Church Safety Manual

5 Consultation Raise OHS&W issues with their work colleagues, supervisor or local OHS&W committee, and assist with their resolution. Regularly discuss OHS&W issues with other staff at staff meetings. Regularly consult with colleagues on OHS&W issues, and actively participate in OHS&W committees if required. Monitoring Monitor and evaluate their OHS&W performance. Monitor the health, safety and well being of work colleagues to ensure they can undertake their work safely. Participate in workplace OHS&W inspections/audits, and assist in the maintenance of OHS&W facilities, resources, equipment and information. SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS Acquire and maintain Police Clearance to work in Catholic Education SA Approved Responding to Abuse & Neglect Education and Care Training. (Formerly known as Mandatory Reporting Training) Senior First Aid Certificate PERFORMANCE REVIEW The employee must undertake performance review on an annual basis. On the first anniversary of appointment and biennially thereafter, or at another mutually agreed time, consultation will occur between the employer and the employee to ensure that the duty statement is accurate.
