1 POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: REPORTING TO: ORGANISATION Deputy Principal Principal Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School DATE March 2015 The Deputy Principal will support the Principal in providing both strategic and day to day leadership of the School. The Deputy Principal is a member of the Senior Executive and supports the Principal in the leadership of the School and assumes the role of Acting Principal in the absence of the Principal. The Deputy Principal is also delegated to exercise direct responsibility in specifically designated areas, including innovation in IT, teaching and learning, quality improvement and compliance processes, marketing, human resources and parent/community relations. Whilst the primary responsibilities of the position are articulated, it is expected that the incumbent will engage with the wider school community and participate fully in events and activities, playing an ambassadorial role as a senior representative of Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School. This Position Description is a guide only and is not intended to be an exhaustive or exclusive list of the duties of this position. It is subject to review and modification by the Principal or Human Resources at any time in response to the changing needs of the School.
2 KEY RELATIONSHIPS Direct Reports Defined in Executive Duties Flow Chart ROLE Internal The Deputy Principal is responsible for supporting the Principal in the leadership, development and management of the School. As a key organisational and operational leader the role encompasses: Working with the Principal and Leadership Team to develop, optimise and implement the School Strategy and Master Plan. Attracting new, and sustaining current enrolments across the School. Embedding the Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School system of pastoral care for all students to ensure preparedness for their future in society. Building and sustaining the Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School culture and Christian values of the School. Managing and ensuring full compliance with all organisational, compliance and business management practices and control systems to mitigate risk, including WHS, protect the learning environment and optimise the use of resources. The HR recruitment process ensuring the attraction, retention and development of high quality, passionate staff who actively engage students in the learning process, proactively support and address their pastoral needs and connect authentically with all stakeholders. Overseeing the provision of ICT services within the school, both academic and administrative services, to ensure that accurate, reliable, effective and efficient administrative support is provided to all parts of the school s operations and to ensure that ICT is used for effective and enterprising teaching and learning. Working within the governance framework set by the School Council, actively contributing to the functions and operation of School Council Sub Committees on which the DP is asked to serve. Positively promoting the School and the brand Lindisfarne with all key stakeholders and the wider community. Acting for the Principal during periods of absence to provide the requisite leadership and management of the School. Maintaining confidentiality and support for the school leadership. Principal to work closely with the Principal to develop and deliver the School strategy and collaborate on relevant educational and business initiatives, policy, compliance, risk, staffing, student and
3 External operational matters of the School. School Council at the discretion of the Principal, to work collaboratively with the School Council and sub committees on matters of governance. Leadership team to work collaboratively to develop a whole of school approach to learning and care that inspires students and provides a seamless experience through all stages. Executive staff to work collaboratively with the Business Manager, HR and Marketing/Communications and Enrolments personnel to ensure the optimal performance of the School at a financial, brand and resourcing level. Staff to provide leadership and build the team culture by engaging all staff in the school s purpose and mission. Students to engage directly with students at all levels, modelling the core values and behaviours which define Lindisfarne. Lindisfarne school community to develop close relationships with the School community, with a key focus on parent groups, donors and past students. Subject to the delegated authorities of the Principal engage with: Federal and State government agencies to ensure performance standards and compliance requirements are met, to remain current with relevant policy developments and endeavour to influence outcomes which benefit the school. Professional, educational and school associations and networks, domestic and international to engage in ongoing professional learning, participate in shaping the future of co-education and to build relationships and networks that create current and future opportunities for the School and its students. Association of Independent Schools NSW where appropriate, to ensure appropriate support and access to resources for the School. Media to build the reputation and brand awareness of the School under the guidance of the Principal.
4 KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Organisational Leadership and Management Work closely with the Principal and leadership team to lead, initiate and contribute to designing, developing and articulating the strategic direction for the School. Work with the leadership team to drive the interconnectivity between campuses to ensure seamless delivery of a superior, contemporary and high quality student-centric educational experience for all students at all stages of learning. Translate the strategy into organisational plans to deliver the outcomes in pastoral care, staff engagement/development, enrolments, asset and brand development and organisation management. With the Principal embed operational decision-making processes on aspects of school organisation and management setting in place clear and appropriate structures, reporting lines and delegated authorities. Engage with all staff, parent groups and stakeholders regularly about the strategy, direction, successes and challenges of the School. Ensure a sound knowledge of emerging trends in educational theory, learning theory, curriculum design, learning technologies, assessment and methodologies underpin all learning and teaching programs. Work collaboratively with the Leadership team and executive staff to drive enrolment growth and appropriate gender balance within the student population of the School. Lead and manage the allocation of resources to critical educational and business issues and opportunities to ensure maximum value for and positive impact upon the School. Actively implement the Lindisfarne business operating and control systems and specified management practices to ensure the effective and proactive management of the School encompassing: The operation asset management and planning, business continuity and budgeting Technology P-12 information systems, global and local connectivity The environment site design, resource usage and impact. In conjunction with the enrolments personnel, meet with prospective school students and families/carers prior to and/or during the admissions process. Monitor enrolment targets in conjunction with the Enrolments Officer and the Principal. Act as a point of escalation in matters of discipline, performance and interpersonal conflict. Oversight of WHS to ensure adequate provisions of resources to meet the requirements of relevant legislation and statutory requirements. Review and monitor whole of school policies to ensure alignment and compliance with the School s strategic direction and statutory requirements. Actively manage critical parent, stakeholder and broader community concerns in line with school policy and practice. Resolution of complaints. Where appropriate elevate matters that represent a risk to the School to the Principal and School Council to ensure effective management and mitigation. Actively manage issues regarding Child Protection. Lead, manage and implement special projects as defined and required by the Principal and School Council.
5 KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Pastoral Care Leadership Relate and interact with students to achieve a level of connectedness that is engaging, reflects a high level of personal commitment, is responsive to the attitudes of relevant generations and is in touch with current student needs and life challenges. Build positive relationships with parents, as appropriate to student needs, to support their development and well-being. Ensure the ongoing development and implementation of: a pastoral care system that supports and encourages all students to explore opportunities, develop a positive sense of themselves, understand and embrace responsibility and respect for others and face the world with confidence to achieve and contribute. a pastoral care safety net that recognises and supports members of the school community facing particular challenges or needs. the disciplinary/restorative justice framework that ensures that student behaviour consistently aligns with the standards of the School. pastoral care initiatives that support staff in being fully engaged in the School and in achieving their professional goals. Staff Leadership and Development Lead, oversee and motivate the performance of all pastoral care and key executive staff with a focus on constructive appraisal, monitoring of professional performance, capability development and mentoring. Support and inspire the performance of all staff in embracing the educational strategies and philosophy of the school, be committed to and passionate about what they do, and deliver the defined performance outcomes. Apply the defined human resource policies, practices and programs of the School in all interactions with staff. Address and resolve matters of performance and conduct, in accordance with School policies, procedures and values. Demonstrate outstanding professional presentation and manner. Demonstrate excellent written communication skills. Stakeholder Leadership and Management In support of the Principal, actively engage with the Parents and Friends Association, other school alumni networks, donors and patrons to ensure the continued growth, development, participation in, and contribution to the future of the School. Under the direction and guidance of the Principal, participate in and present at School Council meetings. With the approval of the Principal build strong and effective relationships across the broader educational, community and media environment to ensure that the profile and objectives of the School are clearly understood, promoted and communicated. Maintain a strong presence in both the parent community (by acting as an ambassador of the School by leading and being actively involved in key events for parents through the year including Parent Teacher Interviews, Information Nights, Speech Nights and so on) and the wider education community. PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES Authentic with a strong personal presence, poise and natural capacity to inspire students, staff and stakeholders. 7 SELECTION CRITERIA Demonstrated Experience and Skills A successful and proven record as a Deputy Principal, Head of School or educational leader with: A capacity to articulate, demonstrate and promote the benefits of continuous education (Preschool to Year 12) within a co-educational setting. A track record of success in building highly effective teams within and across departments/sections and functions of a school/organization. A well informed understanding of contemporary learning practices, research and pedagogy. An ability to attract, mentor and inspire outstanding staff who are passionate about education. An ability to ensure that pastoral care is fully integrated within the curriculum to support, inspire and challenge students to explore new horizons, develop resilience and selfconfidence and accept the notion of personal responsibility and respect for others. Superior intellect that is demonstrated by highly developed research, oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated capacity to manage compliance systems, Human Resources, Marketing, Enrolments and ICT across the whole school. Up to date knowledge of relevant compliance requirements and regulations and a full awareness of WHS and industrial relations issues, procedures and compliance. An appreciation of the dynamics associated with building and sustaining enrolments in a high competitive educational environment. A capacity to build high quality relationships that engender trust and respect with key stakeholders in a school environment. Knowledge of and experience in contemporary management practices in schools including: Strategic design, planning and implementation Change management Staff professional development and appraisal Marketing and communications Commercial management financial, asset management, risk and compliance Project management Stakeholder relationship development and management parents, alumni, donors and the wider community Community engagement locally, nationally and internationally Governance and School Council engagement. Qualifications Tertiary level qualification in a relevant educational discipline (Mandatory) Master qualifications (Desirable)
