5 1 Intrductin The Intel System Management Sftware is the next generatin f the Intel Server Management prduct fferings prviding remte mnitring, cnfiguratin, sftware distributin, updates, and truble-shting management features. 1.1 Dcument Scpe The purpse f this dcument is t help yu use the Intel Server Management Pack. It prvides yu detailed infrmatin n the features f Intel Server Management Pack and hw t use them. 1.2 Overview The Intel System Management Sftware suite prvides a set f applicatins and useful tls fr managing, trubleshting and maintaining Intel IPMI-based Servers. It has a set f essential server hardware management tls targeted specifically fr small and medium businesses. The Intel Server Management Pack fr Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* prvides hardware mnitring capabilities t Intel Servers that supprt IPMI versin 1.5 r later. This Management Pack wrks n bth Micrsft System Center Essentials* and Micrsft System Center Operatins Manager*. The Intel Server Management Pack cnsists f the fllwing cmpnents: Intel Server Management Pack v3.5 This is the server side cmpnent f the Intel Server Management pack. It cntains the management pack and all cmpnents required t be installed n Micrsft* SCE r Micrsft* SCOM Management Server. This management pack can be used t manage IPMI enabled Windws*, Linux* and ut-f band servers. This cmpnent needs t be installed n Micrsft SCE* r Micrsft SCOM* Management Server and Cnsle nly installatins. The Intel Active System Cnsle is als installed as part f the Intel Server Management Pack. Nte: The Intel Active System Cnsle is available as a standalne installatin t. Intel Server Management Pack Agent v3.5 fr Windws* OS It has the Agent side cmpnents f the management pack. The installer detects if the Server supprts IPMI r nt and installs apprpriate drivers and sftware. Intel Server Management Pack Agent v3.5 fr Linux* OS It has the Linux* Agent side cmpnents f the management pack. The installer installs the RAID mnitring cmpnents and cnfigures the BMC fr ut-f band access. In Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* the managed cmputers (shwn as ndes in the relevant diagram) may be servers, desktp cmputers, r laptp cmputers. SMS 3.5

6 cmes with a 90 day trial versin f SCE*. Yu can cnvert the trial versin t a fully licensed versin by applying a purchased key in the licensing wizard which is installed with SCE*. Intel prvides tw ptins fr fully licensed versins managing a different number f ndes. Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* Small Netwrk Editin (system management fr up t five servers and 15 clients) Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* Standard Editin (system management fr up t 10 servers and 50 clients) Once cnverted t a licensed prduct, yu can then purchase Client Access Licenses (CALs) t add additinal server r client licenses -- up t 30 servers and 500 clients -- t manage yur entire netwrk. NOTE: Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* requires Micrsft Active Directry* service and nly ne cpy f the Server may be installed in a netwrk dmain. The prerequisite checker in the installer will infrm yu if anther instance f Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* has been detected. If yu have already installed Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007, yu just need t install the Intel Server Management Pack. 10 2 Getting Started This sectin prvides sme basic steps n hw t install and use the Intel Server Management Pack with Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* r SCOM*. The steps invlved are as fllws: Pre-Installatin Installatin Pst Installatin Cnfiguring Intel Agent based Servers Cnfiguring Intel Agentless Servers Intel Server Management Pack Operatins 2.1 Pre-Installatin This sectin prvides quick steps t install Intel Server Management pack and Intel Agents n an installed Micrsft System Center Essentials* r Micrsft SCOM* setup. Micrsft System Center Essentials* and Micrsft SCOM* have the fllwing simple architecture: Management Server: The SCE* r SCOM* is installed n this Server. This is the Rt Management Server. The management packs are installed in this server and SCE* Cnsle is viewed frm this server. Managed Ndes: One r mre remte servers that yu may want t manage and mnitr. The SCE* Agent and Intel Server Management Pack Agent are installed n Windws* managed ndes. The ndes shuld be in the same Windws* dmain as Management Server fr Agent-based management. Intel Server Management Pack Agent fr Linux* OS is installed n managed ndes with Linux* OS. Fr Agentless management there must be IP Netwrk cnnectivity t these ndes. Management Cnsle: Remte Management cnsle can be installed n any Windws machine which can cnnect t Management Server. It is a windw t the Management Server. Typically, it is installed either n a laptp r desktp. Befre yu use Intel Server Management pack fr mnitring Server hardware yu need t decide what way yu want t manage the systems- Agent-based r Agent-less, ut-fband way. Agent-based way (Windws*): All Windws* Servers can be managed in an agentbased way. In this bth System Center Essentials* agent and Intel Server Management Pack Agent will be installed and running at the managed nde. The discvery f all instances as well as the mnitring will be dne at the Managed nde and the data transferred t Management Server. 10 Intel Server Management Pack - User Guide

11 NOTE: Currently nly Windws Servers cnnected t the same dmain as the Management Server are supprted in an agent-based slutin. Linux* Servers (Red Hat*, SuSE*) can als be managed in an agent-based way. In this Intel Server Management Pack Agent will be installed and running at the managed nde. Yu generally get mre discvery and mnitring infrmatin in an agent-based slutin than an agent-less slutin. Fr example, RAID mnitring infrmatin is available nly in agent-based slutin Agentless way: Any Server with an IP netwrk cnnectin t the Management Server can be managed in an agent-less way. The Management Server will cntact the base-bard management cntrller directly and get discvery and health infrmatin abut the server hardware. Agentless discvery and mnitring wrks independent f the Operating System f the managed nde. In Agentless way discvery and mnitring is perfrmed by the Management Server, hence the lad n the Management Server and netwrk will be higher cmpared t agent-based way. 12 NOTES: Befre prceeding with installatin make sure that there is netwrk cnnectivity amng Management Server, Managed ndes, and Cnsle machines. Yu shuld be lgged in as Dmain Administratr t install management pack successfully. 2.2 Installatin Intel Server Management pack and Intel Agents can be installed frm ne f the fllwing: DVD Dwnladed frm the Intel website Dwnladed frm Micrsft Partner Catalgs*. Refer t Intel System Management Sftware Installatin Guide (CD\DVD:\dcuments\Installatin) fr installatin prcedure. 2.3 Pst Installatin This sectin briefly explains steps t be fllwed after successful installatin f the Intel Server Management pack. Prir t discvering Servers r health mnitring, d the fllwing: 1. After successfully installing management packs, launch Operatins Cnsle f SCE* r SCOM* 2. Intel Agent Managed Servers (Linux): This nde has all the views related t IPMI-based Servers which has Intel Server Management Pack Agent fr Linux* OS installed. Intel Agentless Servers: This nde has all the views related t IPMI based Servers which des nt have Intel Agents r SCE*/ Micrsft* SCOM Agents installed. 14 2.4 Cnfiguring Intel Agent Managed Servers (Windws*) The Intel Server Management Pack Agent fr Windws* Os need t be installed n all Windws* managed ndes t be able t discver and manage them using Agent managed way. NOTE: Only LSI RAID Cards are detected and managed by Intel Server Management pack. Fr this the LSI Management agents shuld be successfully installed in the managed ndes. T discver Intel Agent Managed Servers (Windws): 1. Click n Add new cmputers and devices in the Cmputers tab. This will launch the Cmputer and Device Management Wizard. 2. 15 3. Once Windws* Cmputers are discvered and Intel Server Agents successfully installed, the Servers appear in the Intel Hardware Diagram View flder and Intel Hardware State View flders as shwn belw. Figure 4. Intel Server State windw Intel Server Management Pack - User Guide 15

16 2.5 Cnfiguring Intel Agentless Servers Cnfiguring BMC f Managed nde fr Agentless Management T manage an IPMI-based Server in an agent-less way, fllwing are the steps t be perfrmed: Initialize and cnfigure the base-bard management cntrller f the Server. Cnfigure access permissin t cnnect t BMC ut-f-band. Cnfigure BMC such that its IP Address is reachable t the Management Server If the managed nde is a Windws* Server, install Intel Server Management Agent either frm DVD r by pushing the agent via SCE Sftware Distributin task. The Base-bard cntrller has a default user (Null user) which shuld be cnfigured with a valid passwrd t be able t cnnect t BMC in ut-f-band way. T cnfigure passwrd, any Intel Server utilities like syscnfig r Intel System Cnsle can be used. The Intel Server Management Pack Agent fr Windws* OS als accepts the passwrd as an installer parameter. The frmat t be given is AgentDriver_x86.msi PASSWORD=<bmc passwrd> Where <bmc passwrd> is a string f maximum 16 characters lng. NOTE: D nt use this methd in an un-secure envirnment since the installer parameters can be read frm Windws* registry. If the managed nde is a Linux* Server, the fllwing steps can be dne t cnfigure the Base-bard Management Cntrller using the bmcutil cmmand line tl. This utility is als executed during the Intel Server Management Pack Agent installatin in Linux* Servers if Linux* agent is installed The bmcutil tl is available in DVD at the fllwing lcatin: <DVD-rt>\sftware\hwmgt\linuxagent\BMC-Util\<OS Name> This utility is als available in linuxagent-1.0.tar.gz file under %PrgramFiles%\Intel\NGSMS\linuxagent\ flder after installing Intel Server Management Pack install in SCE* Cnsle Run installme.sh t install the base-bard cntrller cnfiguratin utility. 16 Intel Server Management Pack - User Guide

17 After installing the utility run the cmmand bmcutil frm a terminal as rt user The utility is an interactive prgram, it will ask fr details t be cnfigured like the LAN channel IP address, address mask and the Gateway IP Address. It als asks fr passwrd fr the default user (Null user) f base-bard cntrller. Once successfully run, the BMC is ready fr ut-f-band management. Yu can uninstall the utility if wanted. Once BMC is cnfigured and cnnected t netwrk as explained abve, the managed nde is ready t be discvered and mnitred Agentless Servers Discvery Expand Intel Agentless Servers nde and Cnfiguratin flder in Mnitring Pane. There is a single entry Intel Agentless Cmputer Discvery Range in the view. Launch the Cnsle Task fr Intel Agentless Cmputer Discvery frm the view. The fllwing UI appears. 21 Once the discvery is perfrmed n the selected range f IP addresses, the fllwing screen shws up with discvered servers. The user must a) either update passwrd fr BMC fr each system separately r b) tgether fr all systems befre saving the discvery data. Figure 8. Intel Agentless Servers > Set Passwrd Windw Discvery f servers take a few minutes depending n the range given. During discvery yu can g t any ther task r views and cntinue mnitring ther devices. Once the discvery scan is cmplete, the discvered servers are listed under the grid as shwn in Figure 8. The rw has a unique GUID f each Base-bard cntrller in the Server as well as the IP Address f the LAN Channel n which the BMC is discvered. Next, yu must prvide the BMC Null user (Annymus User) passwrd as well as a readable name t each. Once yu prvide BMC passwrd and a Server name click n Save buttn t save the infrmatin. User can enable/disable mnitring f Agentless Servers using the Enable Mnitring check bx against each Server. If the mnitring is disabled, nly SEL events fr thse Intel Server Management Pack - User Guide 21

22 Servers are displayed and n mnitring fr Basebard Sensrs (Fan, Temperature, Memry and s n) will nt be dne. The credentials prvided by yu in the UI are used fr cnnecting t base-bard cntrller. The discvery f the hardware infrmatin and subsequent health mnitring will be successful nly if the credentials given are crrect. NOTES: Yu can launch Discvery UI fr Agentless Servers any time t add/delete a Server r update passwrd r Server name. Intel Server Management Pack discvers the fllwing items under Agent-less Servers nde and mnitrs them: Base-bard Cntrller f IPMI Servers and the sensrs/devices mnitred by BMC Temperature Vltage Current Fan Physical security Prcessr Pwer Supply Pwer Unit Fan Redundancy Memry NOTE: RAID Cntrller cannt be discvered in an agentless way. Using Intel Agent Managed Servers is the available alternative if yu want t manage RAID Cntrller using Intel Server Management Pack. NOTE: The Agent-based and Agentless Server discvery is perfrmed peridically. T understand hw t change the peridicity, refer Chapter 4 22 Intel Server Management Pack - User Guide

23 2.6 Cnfiguring Intel Agent Managed Servers (Linux*) Installing and Cnfiguring Linux* Agent Intel Server Management Pack Agent fr Linux* OS has t be installed n Linux* Managed Nde Servers by cpying the installatin binaries nt Linux* Server and executing the apprpriate cmmand as mentined in the Release Ntes. The installatin binaries are available in the DVD in the sftware\hwmgt\linuxagent flder. The installatin binaries are als available in %PrgramFiles%\Intel\NGSMS\linuxagent flder after installing Intel Server Management Pack in SCE* Server r SCE* Cnsle. Nte: During the Installatin f the agent, the installatin script asks if the user wants t cnfigure BMC fr Agentless mde (Out-Of-Band) access. This cnfiguratin is als need t be perfrmed and same server need t be discvered in Agentless mde in rder t shw basebard sensr details fr the Linux Servers.
