5 1 Intrductin The Intel System Management Sftware versin 3.0 is the next generatin f the Intel Server Management prduct fferings prviding remte mnitring, cnfiguratin, sftware distributin, updates, and truble-shting management features. 1.1 Dcument Scpe The purpse f this dcument is t help yu install and use the Intel System Management Sftware versin 3.0. It prvides yu detailed infrmatin n the features f Intel System Management Sftware versin 3.0 and hw t use them. 1.2 Overview The Intel System Management Sftware suite prvides a set f applicatins and useful tls fr managing, trubleshting and maintaining Intel IPMI-based Servers. It has a set f essential server hardware management tls targeted specifically fr small and medium businesses. The Intel Server Management Pack fr Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* prvides hardware mnitring capabilities t Intel Servers that supprt IPMI versin 1.5 r later. This Management Pack wrks n bth Micrsft System Center Essentials* and Micrsft System Center Operatins Manager*. The Intel Server Management Pack cnsists f the fllwing cmpnents: Intel Server Management Pack v3.0 This is the server side cmpnent f Intel Server Management pack. This cntains the management pack and all cmpnents required t be installed n Micrsft* SCE r Micrsft* SCOM Management Server. The installer will detect if the Micrsft* SCE r Micrsft* SCOM Management server is installed in the machine. If Management Server is nt installed, the management cnsle part f the Intel Server Management Pack v3.0 will be installed. Intel Server Management Agent v3.0 This has the Agent side cmpnents f the management pack. The installer will detect if the Server supprts IPMI r nt and install apprpriate drivers and sftware.

6 In Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* the managed cmputers (shwn as ndes in the relevant diagram) may be servers, desktp cmputers, r laptp cmputers. With the Intel Server Management Pack, yu can manage ne Intel server right ut f the bx. Yu can then add licenses t manage additinal ndes as yur business grws. The System Center family f prducts includes the fllwing three prducts: Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* Single Server Editin (standalne system management fr ne server) Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* Small Netwrk Editin (system management fr up t fur servers and 15 clients) Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* Standard Editin (system management fr up t 15 servers and 50 clients) All three Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* prducts are installed n the Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* server frm the Intel System Management Sftware media, then unlcked with the license keys. NOTE: Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* requires Micrsft Active Directry* service and nly ne cpy f the Server may be installed in a netwrk dmain. The prerequisite checker in the installer will infrm yu if anther instance f Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007* has been detected. If yu have already installed Micrsft System Center Essentials 2007, yu just need t install the Intel Server Management Pack. Yu can als use the Intel Server Management Pack with Micrsft System Center Operatins Manager 2007* (available frm Micrsft). Fr detailed steps n hw t install MS System Center Essentials* refer Chapter 3. The Micrsft System Center Essentials* r Micrsft SCOM* has the fllwing simple architecture: Management Server: The SCE* r SCOM* is installed n this Server. This is the Rt Management Server. The management packs are installed in this server and SCE* Cnsle is viewed frm this server. Managed Ndes: One r mre remte servers that yu may want t manage and mnitr. The SCE* Agent and Intel Server Agent are installed n these. The ndes shuld be in the same Windws* dmain as Management Server fr Agent-based management. Fr Agentless management there must be IP Netwrk cnnectivity t these ndes. Management Cnsle: Remte Management cnsle can be installed n any Windws machine which can cnnect t Management Server. Yu shuld be lgged in as Dmain Administratr t install management pack successfully. 2.2 Installatin Intel Server Management Pack can be installed frm ne f the fllwing: DVD Dwnladed frm the Intel website Dwnladed frm Micrsft Partner Catalgs*. 13 Intel Server Agent versin Installing Intel Server Management Pack frm Intel System Management Sftware DVD This sectin details the steps t install the Intel SMS 3.0 frm the sftware DVD. 1. Insert DVD int media bay. The DVD will aut-launch the fllwing page: 2. If yu have nt installed MS System Center Essentials*, click Full Server buttn. The next pages will take yu thrugh the SCE* and Intel management packs installatin. 3. If yu are installing management pack n SCOM* r already installed SCE*, select Intel Management Packs ptin n the secnd bx in the screen. This will install nly Intel Management packs 4. Prceed as fllws: On Managed ndes, install Intel System Management Sftware agents frm right-side bx in the screen sht shwn abve On Management Cnsle machines install User-Interface frm the tp-bx in the screen sht shwn here. NOTES While installing Intel Server Management pack at the Management Server yu will have t give Dmain Administratr Credentials fr Intel System Cnsle Yu may need t rebt the Server after installatin if yu are installing Intel Server Agents. The installer will prmpt yu if rebt is needed. 2.3 Pst Installatin This sectin briefly explains steps t be fllwed after successful installatin f the Intel Server Management pack. Prir t discvering Servers r health mnitring, d the fllwing: 1. After successfully installing management packs, launch Operatins Cnsle f SCE* r SCOM* 2. 15 Fllwing tw ndes are added t the Mnitring pane f Operatins Cnsle Intel Agent Managed Servers: This nde has all the views related t IPMIbased Servers which has SCE*/ Micrsft* SCOM Agent and Intel Server Agent installed. Intel Agentless Servers: This nde has all the views related t IPMI based Servers which des nt have Intel Agents r SCE*/ Micrsft* SCOM Agents installed. NOTE: Servers will appear in the views nly after discvery Intel Agent Managed Servers T discver Intel Agent Managed Servers: 1. Launch Cmputer and Device Management Wizard frm the Cmputers tab f Operatins Cnsle. 2. Perfrm discvery f Windws Cmputers using either Autmatic Discvery r Advanced discvery ptin. Once Windws Cmputers are discvered and Intel Server Agents successfully installed, the Servers wuld appear in the Intel Hardware Diagram View flder and Intel Hardware State View flders as shwn belw. Hardware Alerts will appear in the Intel Hardware Alerts flder and health state will appear in the State and Diagram views IPMI-based Servers can be discvered and the hardware health mnitred via utf-band Base bard cntrller independent f the hst Operating system state. T discver and mnitr IPMI-based Servers in an Agentless fashin, first the Server s Base bard Management Cntrllers shuld be cnfigured and cnnected t netwrk where Management Server is present. NOTE : T understand hw t cnfigure Basebard Management Cntrllers refer Sectin Cnfiguring Intel Agentless Servers 1. 17 2. Launch Discvery Wizard frm Update Discvery IP Range fr Agentless Management cnsle task 3. Input IP Address range in which the Servers Basebard Management Cntrller IP Address is present. Click Add > Discver The discvery takes place and discvered Servers wuld be listed in the UI belw as a table 4. Select each Server frm the table and cnfigure Base-bard Management Cntrller passwrd and a user-friendly server name. 5. Select Update and repeat the step abve fr each Server in the table. Once dne, click n Save& Exit buttn. The Servers will be discvered and all sensrs will be listed under Diagram View and Hardware State flders NOTE: The Agent-based and Agentless Server discvery is perfrmed peridically. 19 RAID Battery Backup Unit Sensrs The Intel Server Management Pack mnitrs these elements and als waits fr any events/alerts generated by these elements. Intel Hardware Diagram View gives a diagrammatic representatin f all hardware cmpnents and sensrs mnitred by the management pack. If the health f ne r mre cmpnents changes, yu can view that dynamically n the diagram view and see hw it affects the verall system health. Any change in the health f any f these cmpnents results in the health update f the Server. Intel Hardware State View gives cnslidated health state f the Server hardware and health f the cmpnent grups immediately under the Server instance. The alerts related t any health change r any events like chassis intrusin are captured and displayed in the Intel Hardware Alerts View. Alerts are classified as critical, warning and infrmatinal alerts and the alerts can be gruped based n severity, surce, received time r any ther field TIP: The health f the hardware cmpnents are rlled up t the health f the Windws Cmputers. S any change in hardware health is reflected in the Cmputer instance present in the Cmputers pane f Operatins Cnsle. Pwer Cnsumptin (Watts) View This view gives a graph f pwer cnsumptin reprted by selected servers. Yu can cnfigure the time range by accessing it by right clicking n the graph. The pwer cnsumptin n each pwer supply is shwn separately. Ttal Pwer Usage Percentage View This view shws the ttal pwer cnsumptin reprted by the selected servers as a percent f the ttal rated pwer fr the pwer supplies. Only PSMI-capable pwer supplies with this pwer reprting capability are supprted. Agent-based way: All Windws* Servers can be managed in an agent-based way. In this bth System Center Essentials* agent and Intel Server agent will be installed and running at the managed nde. Cnfigure access permissin t cnnect t BMC ut-f-band. Cnfigure BMC such that its IP Address is reachable t the Management Server Initializing and Cnfiguring Base-Bard Cntrller fr Out-Of-Band Management If the managed nde is a Windws* Server, install Intel Server Management Agent either frm DVD r by pushing the agent via SCE Sftware Distributin task. The Base-bard cntrller has a default user (Null user) which shuld be cnfigured with a valid passwrd t be able t cnnect t BMC in ut-f-band way. T cnfigure passwrd, any Intel Server utilities like syscnfig r Intel System Cnsle can be used. The Intel Server Management Agent versin 3.0 als accepts the passwrd as an installer parameter. The frmat t be given is AgentDriver_x86.msi PASSWORD=<bmc passwrd> Where <bmc passwrd> is an alphanumeric string f maximum 16 characters lng. NOTE: D nt use this methd in an un-secure envirnment since the installer parameters can be read frm Windws* registry. If the managed nde is a Linux Server, the fllwing steps can be dne t initialize the base-bard cntrller. Install the BMC Cnfiguratin utility frm the DVD.
