The key telehealth markets include telemedicine, remote monitoring, mobile health (mhealth), and wearables. Telehealth enables anytime-anywhere access to healthcare services, thus serving a pressing market need. Consumers as well as telehealth companies in developed countries agree that telemedicine is a core technology-based healthcare service that is in demand and is expected to generate high market returns in the near future. The major industry trends driving telemedicine adoption in North America include the availability of reimbursement, the adoption of standards and guidelines, technology improvements, and the increasing interest in specialized telemedicine consults. The Asia-Pacific (APAC) scenario is similar to Western countries in that governments and healthcare providers have acknowledged the needs and the benefits of telemedicine in the region. 9 CEO s Perspective 1 2 Healthcare in APAC continues to be provider-centric, with the physician being the key decision maker in care delivery. Thus, telemedicine s target segment continues to be physicians. Payment models in APAC still reward physicians for volumes rather than quality. As a result, physicians view telemedicine as a tool to increase business volumes Cloud-based telemedicine platforms that reduce capital investment and eliminate the need for an in-house IT team are preferred by providers. An additional advantage of such platforms is that they may be integrated with monitoring devices and/or hospital information systems to provide a comprehensive offering. Such integrated telehealth platforms are of interest to insurers as well. They also allow a more stable business model that goes beyond episodic consultation and includes long-term care. 10
